Virginia Ann Pounds Goddard

Nov 19, 1929 - Feb 02, 2024

location-icon

Baldwyn, MS

On February 3, 2024 at 9:38 A.M., Virginia Ann Pounds Goddard's earthly life came to an end, surrounded by loved ones who will miss her terribly. Her Christian example and lasting impact, however, will continue to live on in the lives she touched. Born November 19, 1929, to Eldon and Nina Pounds, Virginia was the youngest of 6 children. She graduated from New Site High School, where she enjoyed activities such as taking part in dramatic productions (once even playing the part of Rebecca in Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm). Throughout high school, Virginia was no stranger to hard work. Chore life-be it cotton picking, egg gathering, or milking cows, she experienced it all. After graduation, she moved to Booneville where she and her sister Mary (aka Murlee) shared a room in Mrs. Hamm's boarding house. Walking to and from work, a young fellow noticed her, asked her out, had a short courtship, but a very long marriage. She and Smith Goddard were married for 65 years, prior to his death in 2014. Virginia worked in the office at Bluebell for a few years. She then helped her husband establish Goddard's Jewelry, which they owned from 1958-1974. She then went on to work at the ASCS office for approximately 13 years. Virginia was an active member of East Booneville Baptist Church for 37 years and then Gaston Baptist for the next 37 years. Throughout the years she served in the nursery, preschool and teenager classes, sang in the choir, helped on vacation Bible school, loved WMU work, and served on various committees. Virginia was the prime example of a southern cook, always keeping a dessert on hand for anyone who might visit. She volunteered at Baptist Memorial Hospital for many years. She loved flowers, enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn, doing needlework, and being a homemaker in every scene of the word. Virginia was a wonderful caregiver to her husband for almost the entirety of their marriage. She was also the sole babysitter for all three of her grandgirls, when they were young, who affectionately knew her as "Mamaw". Virginia leaves two daughters, Diane (Ronny) Guin, and Barbara (Danny) Murphy, all of Booneville. She also leaves three granddaughters, Missy (Trent) Baggett of Rienzi, Candi (Ray) Hall of Marietta, and Bethany (Thomas) Cummings of Booneville. She leaves great grandchildren Savannah, Cole, and Bella Baggett, Eli and Sophie Hall, and Caleb, Murphy, Sully, and Baby Girl Cummings, due in May. She also leaves two sisters-in-law, Donnie Goddard of Booneville and Ruth Strakis of Florida, on brother-in-law, Bobby Goddard, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was reunited in eternity by her husband, her parents, her brother, Thurmond Pounds, sisters, Lola Caver, Lorene Eaton, Erlene Thompson and Mary Crabb. Services are 1 P.M. Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at Gaston Baptist Church with Bro. Ray Hall, Dr. Thomas Magers and Dr. Jason Middleton officiating. Burial will follow in the Gaston Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8 pm Monday, February 5, 2024 at Gaston Baptist Church. Pallbearers are Trent Baggett, Thomas Cummings, Cole Baggett, Eli Hall, Caleb Cummings and Murphy Cummings. Memorials can be made to Gaston Baptist Church, Rosemary's Home of Hope, and Gideon's International.
