They moved to New Orleans Louisiana, for a short time, before seeking out a job opportunity in Cleveland Ohio. Lena trained and worked at Cleveland Clinic Hospital as a Nurse. She would say that she heard the prompting of God to move once more to San Francisco California where she worked as a scrub technician at the Podiatry Hospital. Due to the demandingly long hours of shift work and raising a young daughter, Lena gladly made a career shift and began working at the San Francisco Unified School District, where she would retire after 25 years as a Food Service Supervisor. Following retirement Lena spent the majority of her time serving as a Chaplain at Fort Miley in Presidio California. She lovingly and patiently supported seniors in various ways; leading Bible studies, providing holiday gifts, and encouraging the sick and shut in with the message of hope in Jesus Christ. In 1995, Lena and Edward moved from Daily City to Vacaville California to be closer to their only daughter and grandchildren. Lena continued her service to Christ circulating through various senior care homes and rehabilitation centers demonstrating her faith in God through her love for others. First Baptist Church was Lena's church home for more than 25 years. She served in the choir, the Home Builders class, assisted with the youth, the prayer line, in the kitchen, and attended many Bible studies. Lena was a dedicated caregiver to her husband, by his side until his passing on December 5, 2005. Both Lena and Edward shared not only a remarkably beautiful life together but would be laid to rest on the same date, 18 years 6,574 days apart.Show more

Albertina Sousa Bettencourt was born on September 9, 1941, on the island of Sao Jorge, Azores, Portugal to Maria and Camillo Sousa. She passed away at home on the afternoon of November 17th surrounded by family. Albertina was the second of seven children born to Maria and Camillo. She is survived by five siblings: Ariel Teixeira (Caesar - deceased), Bernardette Dias (Porfidio), Jose Sousa (Floriberta), Lasalete Galvao (Jacinto), Gabriela Martins (Joao), her sister Eva Garcia (Eugenio) preceded her. Albertina's life was one of challenges and joys. Albertina married the late Pedro Borges Fagundes (1936-1970) in 1962. The couple lived a modest life in the home Pedro built with his father in the village of Serreta, Terceira, Azores. Together they had six children, Floriberto Fagundes (Barbara), Maria Dinis (Jorge), Laurindo Fagundes (Caroline), Zilda Bosch, Domitilia Fagundes and Pedro Fagundes (Vanessa). Sadly, Pedro died in a tragic farming accident in the San Joaquin valley while he was in California alone, just weeks before Albertina would deliver baby number six. Life had many hardships, however, through the generosity of the Portuguese community and her father sponsoring the family, Albertina and her children immigrated to California in 1973. The family called Alameda home until 1986. In the spring of 1986 Albertina met her life partner, Manuel Bettencourt. They were married just a few months later in July of 1986. This union introduced yet another son, Emanuel Bettencourt (Desiray), rounding out the count now at seven children. Manuel was literally by Albertina's side until the day she passed. Albertina had suffered from Alzheimer's for the past several years and Manuel was her caregiver. Before Albertina's dementia, the couple enjoyed traveling to their native Azores, enjoying many summers there visiting family and friends. Here in the US, they enjoyed camping with family or with friends at various festas throughout California. Albertina leaves us quite a legacy with 21 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren (and still counting). She taught us that although life is not easy, it is a gift and we should live it to its fullest. We will always smile and think of her when we look around at the beautiful, loud and loving family she built. Family and friends are invited to join us for her services: St. Joseph Catholic Church 1791 Marshall Rd Vacaville, CA 95687 Monday, December 4, 2023 Viewing 11AM Rosary 12PM Funeral Mass 1PMShow more

Ernestine Esparza, also known as "Sunny" (for her sunny disposition and personality), was born in Ozona Texas in 1925. Ernestine was the daughter of the town entrepreneur, Santiago Vargas and a stay-at-home mother, Maria Vargas. She had a loving mother, a father she adored, and her siblings, were, sisters, Elva, Emma and Evelyn and brothers, Hector, Blas, Ernesto, Yverto and Jimmy. Ernestine is survived by her brother Jimmy Vargas and her sister Elva Eastman. Ernestine married the love of her life Joe Esparza on June 1, 1945. They were married for 68 years. Joe passed away in 2003. Joe and Ernestine had many children of which 6 survived to adulthood. Joe, Bob, Cynthia, David, Gloria, and John. Bob, sadly, passed away in 2006. All her children were successful and good people who Ernestine was very proud of. They all graduated from college and 3 of them went on to achieve advanced degrees. Ernestine was an amazing woman. For most of her family, she was known as Grandma, a kind matriarch who had most of her grandchildren live with her at one time or another. Grandma's door was always open, and she was ready to hear about your life and your family. If you needed a place to live, she always had a room available. In Vacaville, people remember her as the woman who started a medical clinic for the poor in the early 70s. The clinic lasted for over 30 years. Often people would stop to talk with her at restaurants and say, "You helped me so much thank you for what you do!"Joe and Ernestine had three businesses that they started after Joe left his military career. They had a furniture and appliance store and 2 Mexican restaurants, one in Lodi and one in Vacaville. Ernestine was also known for her inspiration to many of her friends and young people she met over the years. Ernestine herself had an honorary bachelor's degree and attended Solano Community College to take various art classes until she was in her mid-80s. There is so much to say about Ernestine's love of life. She would say Vivir Vivir Vivir which means to live, to live to live. Ernestine loved traveling, loved going out to eat and appreciated the good life. Her dancing was legendary and danced well into her 90s. Ernestine is survived by children, Joe (Marsha) Esparza, Cynthia (Don) Schiff, David (Sandy) Esparza, Gloria (Larry) Engman, and John (Lynn) Esparza, 23 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 2 great great-grandchildren, and her caretaker Oralia Altamarino and Oralia's daughters, Denise and Muncie, who we owe a debt of gratitude.Show more
