Victor Ray Reese, Jr., 75, of Lufkin died Wednesday, February 28, 2024 in a local hospice facility. Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Carroway Funeral Home. Mr. Reese was born November 17, 1948 in Yoakum, Texas to the late Ruth Evelyn (Roose) and Victor Ray Reese, Sr. He served in the U.S. Navy for six years and retired from Lufkin Industries following more than 30 years employment as a machinist. He was an avid gardener and loved to hunt, fish, and always looked forward to 4-wheeler rides with his great-granddaughter Hayden. He especially valued his yearly hunting trip with his best friend Kent James. Vic really enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Hayden particularly stepped up to be a motivation to beat his cancer. He looked forward to her daily pictures, videos, and Facetime calls. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Nacogdoches. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Dewayne and Shelby Reese of Diboll; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Brad Lewis of Etoile; grandson and wife, Tyler and Ashley White of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri; granddaughters, Morgan Reese and fiancée Adrian Falcon of Houston and Halle Rice of Diboll; great-grandchildren, Hayden White, Eisley Talmage, Kayzlei Rice, and Lennox Falcon; sisters, Pam Johnson of Lufkin and Debbie Willard of Celina; brother, Rick Reese of Nacogdoches; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Victor Brian Reese and Daniel Murphy Reese. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice in the Pines, 1504 W. A Celebration of Ronald “Ron” Larry Read’s Life, age 77, of Brookeland, Texas, will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 2, 2024 at Hillcrest Baptist Church with burial following at Townsend Cemetery near Broaddus, TX. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until the time of service at the church. Ron passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at CHI St. Luke’s Hospital in Lufkin, Texas surrounded by his loving family. Born on January 15, 1947 to Chester (Sam) and Nellie Read in Camp Seale, TX, he was a lifelong resident of Brookeland, TX and the Jasper area. He was a 1965 graduate of Brookeland High School and a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. On March 5, 1966 he married the love of his life, Linda Powell, at Mill Creek Church in Brookeland. He served in the United States Army. He was the owner/operator of Read’s Grocery and Bait Store for many years, a former manager at Gibson’s Sporting Goods and he retired from TDCJ after 20 years. Ron is survived by his wife of 58 years, Linda Read of Brookeland, TX; daughters, Kimberly Simmons and husband Tim of Huntsville, TX and Leigh Sargent and husband Chad of St. Charles, Missouri; seven grandchildren, Ashlea Doss and husband Kenny, Stephen Simmons and wife Katie, Jacob Woods, Hunter Woods and wife Elaine, Bryan Read and wife Julia, Kimberlin Sargent and Kace Sargent; and six great-grandchildren, Kason Doss, Allison Doss, Jackson Doss, Camryn Simmons, Charlotte Woods and Ruth Woods. Mr. Cates was born on November 7, 1947, in Lufkin, Texas, to the late Odell Cates and Carolyn Franklin Cates, and passed peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, February 28, 2024, in Lufkin. Mr. Cates was a charismatic person that was full of humor. He loved to be around people and people loved to be around him. Mr. Cates enjoyed fishing, camping, and traveling. One of his favorite places to visit was Branson, Missouri. His 68’ red Chevrolet Corvette was the love of his life and he had so much fun putting her in car shows where together they won many trophies and plaques. He also loved family gatherings. Melba Lee Jones Bates

Melba Lee Jones Bates was born in Holly Springs, Arkansas February 28, 1923 to Johnie William Jones and Myrtle (Shankle) Jones. She passed from this life February 20, 2024. She was 100 years old, lacking eight days of being 101. Melba attended schools in El Dorado, Arkansas and Vivian, Louisiana, where she graduated from high school. She then attended Magnolia (Arkansas) A&M, graduating in 1942. In the fall of that year, she met Grady Bates at work, and they married on December 5, 1942. After 15 years in El Dorado, Arkansas they were transferred to Houston, Texas. They made their home, raising their children in Spring Branch. When Grady passed away in 2015, they had celebrated 72 years of marriage. Melba continued to live in their home until she turned 100 and then moved to Lufkin, Texas. After graduating from college, Melba worked five years. She then became a stay-at-home mom for their two children. She returned to work as a secretary at Benjamin Moore Paint Company, where she excelled in Gregg shorthand, and later retired as the office manager. Melba was an excellent seamstress, making garments for her family, and loved Sewing for Missions weekly at her church, Memorial Drive Presbyterian. She liked crocheting, knitting, and other needlework. Her hands were always busy. For 50 years Melba and Grady enjoyed square dancing and traveling in RVs with dear friends to square dances across several states. Some of her other hobbies were reading, researching genealogy, cooking, and canning and freezing vegetables from their big garden. She was always happy to share her skills and knowledge with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Melba was constantly working to make life better for her family and others. God and family were the most important things in her life. Melba was preceded in death by her husband, Grady M. Bates, sister, Louise Jones Riley; and brother, Walter Edward Jones. She is survived by her children, Melinda Bates Talley and husband Joel, and Walter G. Bates and wife Linda; grandchildren, Laura Talley Dobbs and husband Walt, Austin B. Talley and wife Kim, Scott G. Bates, and Leighanne Bates Hancock and husband Joe; great-grandchildren, Grady, Nell, and Callum Dobbs, Genevieve and William Talley, Morgan and Hallie Hancock; brother, Johnie W. Jones, Jr.; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. According to her wishes, a small private celebration of her life will be held. Mrs. Valdez was a member of Los Pentecostal de Lufkin and was very involved in her church. She enjoyed reading her Bible, and listening to Christian music as she sang along.
