Cindy Nishimoto was born in Walnut Grove to Teruichi and Teruko Iwamiya on December 19, 1924, and passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on September 26, 2023, at the University Retirement Community in Davis. She was the eldest of 7 children. Cindy’s family moved from Walnut Grove to Acampo when she was six years old. During World War II she was incarcerated with her family in the Rohwer Relocation Camp in Arkansas. While in camp, she married Julius Nishimoto on March 14, 1945. They were married for 39 years until his untimely death in 1984. After the war, she and Julius settled in Penryn California, where she lived for 41 years. In 1986 she moved to Fair Oaks where she lived for 16 years. She then moved to Rocklin where she lived for 10 years before settling into the University Retirement Community in Davis. Cindy was employed by the State of California as an Accounting Technician, first for many years at the Franchise Tax Board, followed by the Department of Corrections, Folsom State Prison, from which she retired in 1986. Predeceased by her parents, husband Julius, brothers George Iwamiya and Shig Iwamiya, sisters Wendy (Hank) Nagao, Haruko (Sus) Onishi, sisters-in-law Nadine Iwamiya, Alice (Kiyoto) Nishimoto, Hannah (Shig) Sugitani, brothers-in-law Henry Okazaki, Lloyd Sato, and niece Kelly (Chris) Yamane. Cindy is survived by her children Jerry (Gail) of Davis, and Diane (David Meads) of Santa Rosa, grandchildren Steve (Alisa), Julie (Jerome Williams), and Mark Nishimoto, and Trevor, Brianna, and Evan Meads, six great-grandchildren, brothers Tom (Gracie) Iwamiya and Dickie Iwamiya, sisters-in-law Naomi Iwamiya and Christine Iwamiya, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff at URC Memory Support Unit for their loving care over the past 7 years, Dr. Marie Tumusok, Sutter Medical Group, for being kind, compassionate and supportive in treating Cindy, and YoloCares Hospice for their compassionate care and support. Services will be private. Inurnment will be at Cherokee Memorial Park in Lodi, CA. The family respectfully requests no koden or flowers. Karen Castanon passed November 7th, 2023 at the age of 60 surrounded by family. She is survived by her husband Troy, son Taylor and daughter Demitria. Karen arrived on the Central Coast following her graduation from Davis Senior High School in 1981, where she married her husband, Troy. She cherished her life as a devoted mother, traveling to every cross country and track meet across the state to cheer on her son and daughter. Karen’s Central Coast circle grew over her 14 years as a teacher at Shell Beach Elementary, Ocean View Elementary and other district assignments. In 2020, Karen was honored at the Madonna Inn with a Golden Educator Award by the Channel Islands Service Center Council for going above and beyond as educator in the Lucia Mar Unified School District. In her free time, Karen enjoyed gardening from her herb bed, fruit trees and maintaining her generational roses. Karen’s eyes would light up when recounting an evening beneath the lights of her stunning coastal oaks. She is reunited with mother and father Peggy and Bob Swisher, as well as countless cousins, aunts and uncles who are having coffee and catching up on the years. Her public celebration of life will be held at Baileyanna Winery at 2:30pm Saturday December 2nd. Vernalee Parfitt

Age - 96

After a well lived life of 96 years, our beloved Vernalee Parfitt passed away on Friday morning, November 3, 2023 of natural causes. She leaves behind her legacy of love, joy, self-lessness and sincerity, topped off with a subtle but gracious sense of humor and many sporting events unattended. Vernalee was born on February 25, 1927, in Champaign, Illinois, to Gladys and Edward Reed. She had four siblings, two brothers and two sisters. She met Leslie Parfitt upon his return from WWII in 1947 and was married shortly thereafter. At the age of 32, with two young daughters, they moved from South Bend, Indiana, to Sacramento, CA for a career opportunity for their family, a huge move for a young woman growing up in the Midwest. It took a lot of courage to move 2,500 miles away from the security of family in the late 1950’s. She had to tap in to that courage through out her life, along the way setting a wonderful example for her daughters and grandchildren. Vernalee and Leslie went separate ways in 1983, again leaving her to tap in to that courage and redefine her life. She later met Albert Baylacq, they had a wonderful relationship of 7 years traveling the coast of California in their beautiful white Mercedes. She spent the last years of Albert’s life by his bedside caring for him as he passed from cancer. He loved her dearly and how deserving she was of that love. On a professional note, Vernalee worked in the banking industry. After taking a 15 year sabbatical to raise her family, she returned to work at Crocker Bank/Wells Fargo at the Fair Oaks branch, where she became an icon in the community. Everyone knew and loved Vernalee at the bank. Upon her retirement and the passing of her companion, Vernalee purchased a home in Sun City, Roseville, CA. There she was able to enjoy her love of the game of golf, learned to line dance, and never missed a day at the gym. Her older sister, Dorothy Warburton, chose to retire in Roseville as well, and for 20 years these two adorable ladies enjoyed her grandchildren’s sporting events, concerts, and many family vacations. At the age of 88, Vernalee had to leave her beloved Sun City as her arthritic knees lessened her mobility. At this time she moved to Davis to be close to her eldest daughter. Although not physically active, and being the avid sports fan that she was, her activity was pretty much limited to watching her Giants, 49ers, Kings and Phil Michelson on TV. She was fortunate to have Lupe de Raya, a dedicated and loving caregiver for 6 years. It was Lupe who had her hand in hers as Vernalee left on her journey to Heaven. Her family brought special joy to Vernalee, and was always her priority. She loved being with them and she had a special place for her four grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Her family loved and respected her as the matriarch of the family. She is survived by her two daughters, Cynthia (Reed) Schulze of Davis, and Candace Saari of Oceanside, CA. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kimberlee (Tom) Cleary, Matthew Schulze, Lindsey Gonzalez and Nicole (Zach) Brown. Her great grandchildren include Emma, Leah, Robert and Clara Cleary, and Asher Gonzalez and Jordyn Brown. She loved her dog Molly, who was preceded by little Peaches, both providing her unconditional joy. We are planning a gathering at or near Sun City, Roseville on or around her birthday, February 25, 2024, to celebrate her life and first birthday in heaven. More information to come. Shihui Fan

Born in China on February 18 1931, Shihui Fan embarked on an extraordinary journey in 1994 when she made the life-altering decision to move to the United States. She started on a journey that took her through the joys and challenges of nearly a century. Shihui Fan lived a long and fulfilling 92 years, leaving behind a legacy that will forever inspire and comfort those who had the privilege of knowing her. Family was at the center of Shihui’s world. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She delighted in the company of her child and grandchildren, finding joy in their accomplishments and milestones. Her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured with her love and wisdom. A viewing will be held from 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM on October 27, 2023, at Smith funeral Home. Dolores Dumont

Age - 85

Dolores DuMont passed away Friday, Sept. 22, at the age of 85. She is survived by her daughters, Patricia DuMont of Sacramento and Katherine Luther of New York; grandsons Justin Luther of New York and Kyle Luther of San Francisco; brother Tom Martinez (Juanita) of Woodland; sister-in-law Phylis Martinez (Anthony); and numerous nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and -nephews. Dolores is preceded in death by her parents, Jose and Andrea Martinez, née Pena, her brother Anthony (Tony) Martinez, and her husband Bill Kelly. Dolores was retired from UCD and was an avid sports fan, especially tennis and a lifelong gardener. She will be missed by her family and many lifelong friends. A Rosary will begin at 7 p. m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at St. James Catholic church, and a Memorial Mass at noon Oct. 18, with a reception immediately to follow at St. James Parish hall.Show more

Nelly Chin

Age - 84

Mrs. Nelly Fee Woon Chin, of Davis, California, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2023, at the age of 84. Nelly was born to parents Kow Wong and Thien Lan Chew on August 24, 1938 in Burma. She was the 3rd eldest daughter out of 10 children. In 1958, she married her sweetheart, George Chin and they had four children together. Nelly is survived by her son, Simon Chin, daughters Catherine Cheah and Grace Osborne, seven siblings, and seven grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son Richard Chin (her third child) and husband, George. Nelly was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was also a wonderful daughter, sister, aunt, and friend. She went above and beyond to take care of everyone: her parents, family, friends and all those around her. She was respected and loved by all. Nelly immigrated to the US from Burma and lived in several cities, including San Francisco, Union City, and Davis. She made many sacrifices so that her family could have a better life. She was a high school teacher for over 15 years. She loved to travel and eat good food. She especially enjoyed the performing arts. The family was able to say goodbye to her and are in peace, knowing that she is returning home to her Heavenly Father and is now with her husband, George and son, Richard. The family appreciates all those who have enriched Nelly’s life and is grateful for all the love, support, and prayers. There will be no viewing of the body or a funeral. Instead, there will be a celebration of her life among friends and family. Gertrude Walker

Age - 100

Gertrude Harriet (Trudy) Walker, age 100, died on July 25, 2023 at University Retirement Community in Davis, California. A 62 year resident of Davis, Trudy was born in Monmouth, Illinois on April 8, 1923 to Lily Josephson Peterson and Lester Gerhart Peterson. She attended local schools and began studies at Illinois State University in Bloomington-Normal in the fall of 1941. She was employed at International Mineral and Chemical in Chicago until a transfer brought her to San José, California, in 1945. Trudy and Raymond Fredrick Walker were married in December, 1947 in San Jose and moved to Sacramento where Ray took a position as a mechanical engineer with the State of California Division of Architecture. There, four children were born – Constance, Christopher, Karen, and Thomas. Trudy enjoyed the friendships of neighbors and fellow members of the international women’s service sorority, Beta Sigma Phi. She maintained contact over the years with many old friends from college days as well as new friends made in both Sacramento and Davis. The Walkers moved to Davis in 1961. Trudy began work for the Mathematics Association of America and travelled to national conferences often to assist the national association. In 1977 she began a career in real estate with Lyon Real Estate and greatly enjoyed the challenge of helping people find the perfect match in a local property. Her life spanned a century of spectacular transformation in world events and culture, with Trudy raising her family during a time of great change in the country — the 1950’s, 1960’s, and 1970’s. She kept up on current events through her appetite for news and the exchange of opinions over the kitchen table. She was an avid bridge player, enjoyed poker at URC, was a seamstress, a reader, and a gourmet cook. Trudy was best known for her kindness, honesty, manners, and thoughtful gestures. She kept in touch with friends old and new, and like many women of her era, she found hand-written letters and Christmas cards to be a time to exchange the latest family news. In retirement, Ray and Trudy travelled often around the United States as well as internationally. She particularly enjoyed the Walker, Peterson, Dahl summer reunions with her sister, (Dorothy Dahl), her brother (Willard Peterson) and their families. She served the Sutter Hospital Auxiliary and the Soroptimists for many years. Trudy is survived by her children Connie (Randy Fogerty), Christopher (Gloria Guzman-Walker), Karen Walker, and Thomas Walker; her grandchildren Anne Walker Fogerty (Camille Gaïo), and Evan Thomas Walker; and her great-grandson, Rémy Fogerty Gaïo. Monique Heusner

Age - 88

Monique Heusner was born in Strasbourg, France, on January 25, 1935, and died shortly after midnight, September 1, 2023. She was the youngest of three sisters and the last to leave this world. She enjoyed a long, rich life, spanning two continents: she spent her first three decades in France and the remaining years in Davis. She raised three children, completed a college degree, taught for a living, and pursued her many passions: art, literature, movies, singing, dancing, gardening, and looking after her pets. She lost both her parents at 16, yet their influence on her persisted: her father had collected art and loved music, her mother had taught high school. During World War II, her family lived for six years in rural southwestern France, which shaped her devotion to gardens and animals. Monique loved her pets: dogs, cats, rabbits, parakeets, a duck, and for a few years, an injured crow she had nursed back to health. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BA from UC Davis in 1975, majoring in French, art history, and art studio. She earned her teaching credential in 1980 and taught French and art at Gridley High School from 1986 to 1999. Once retired, she continued teaching French at the Alliance Française in Sacramento and gave private lessons. She continued to paint over the years, exhibiting her work at local galleries and juried shows. She also curated the Objet d'Art gallery in Davis in the 1990s. Those who knew her remember her liveliness, curiosity, and welcoming generosity, the paintings she freely gave away, her inventive bilingual puns, and her love of driving. One of her fondest memories was exploring the back roads of France during the summer of 1994, to celebrate her recovery from breast cancer. She will be mourned by her three children and four grandchildren, their spouses and partners, relatives in Europe, and many friends. The family will place her ashes at the Davis Cemetery and Arboretum in a private ceremony. Instead of flowers, Monique would have appreciated donations in her name to any of your favorite charities.
