It is with a mix of laughter and tears that we celebrate the life of Timothy Allan "Woody" Woods Woody was born on November 11, 1962, in Allegan, Michigan He took his final breath on October 3, 2023, in Holland, Michigan, leaving behind his wife, Jan Earl Woods, and his faithful friend, Haylee Woody was the son of William H Jr and Rose (Jones) Woods He was the sibling who always had a joke ready to lighten the mood or a prank to stir the pot, leaving his sisters, Laura (Robert) Vanderwell, Kate Sprague, and Barb (Brian) Woods-Rawley, in stitches He also leaves behind 3 nephews, Brian Vanderwell, Ryan Sprague, and Anthony Doest Woody was a man of many passions He was a die-hard Detroit Lions and Tigers fan He loved the roar of a NASCAR race (Mark Martin) and the thrill of a motorcycle ride Bowling, golfing, and fishing were activities that allowed him to showcase his competitive side and his love for a good laugh He was an avid adventurer, often heading up north with friends Woody was best described as funny, adventurous, and friendly His sense of humor was infectious, and he had a knack for making everyone around him feel like they were part of the joke rather than the butt of it His adventurous spirit led him to countless adventures, and his friendly nature ensured he never met a stranger In remembering Woody, it's impossible not to smile His life was a testament to the power of laughter and the importance of not taking ourselves too seriously His legacy will live on in the laughter of those who knew him and the stories they share about his antics As we bid farewell to Timothy Allan "Woody" Woods, we do so with laughter in our hearts and smiles on our faces, just as he would have wanted Rest in peace, you funny, adventurous, friendly soul Visitation for Woody will be Tuesday, October 10, 2023 from 12pm to 2pm with the service starting at 2pm at Chappell Funeral Home, 637 W Main St Fennville, MI 49408 A Celebration of Life will be held at What Not Inn directly after the service for sharing stories, laughter, food and music In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Woody's name to Ganges United Methodist Church (PO Box 511, Fennville, MI 49408) or Alzheimer's Foundation (322 Eighth Ave 16 floor, NY, NY 10001) To to the family or in memory of Timothy Allan Woods, please

Frank Piantek

Age - 79

Frank Piantek, 79, of Fennville, passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, in his sleep on the morning of November 4, 2023. Frank was born in 1944 in Chicago, IL to Frank Piantek Sr. and Lottie Piantek. He married his wife, Gloria, in 1973, and celebrated their 50th anniversary in February. Gloria stayed true to their love by ensuring that he received the best care at Douglas Cove Health and Rehabilitation in his final days. Together they had three amazing children: Jacquelyn Mazza (Kenneth Mazza), Jamie Conery (Mat Collins), and Dennis Piantek. Frank inherited his mother's cheeky sense of humor and there was never a dull moment when it came to having conversations with him, especially regarding politics. He was known to be opinionated and bull-headed at times but always had a heart of gold when it came to his family. He sacrificed everything for them and would do anything for them. Frank was an adventurist when it came to his children. A typical summer in our childhood was spent swimming at the lake, watching the sunset on the beach, riding bikes to the library or tastee treat, playing a quick and often-times hilarious game of tennis, and visiting Nana for coffee and pink fluff pie. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Piantek (Cheryl Piantek). He is survived by his sister Elaine Lewis. Frank proudly displayed a Michigan State University flag and had an entire wardrobe of MSU clothing in support of his two daughters' alma mater. He worked as a bus driver for Fennville Public Schools for 25 years, retiring but still supporting the transportation department. He had a true passion for the school and his role - instilling this in his son, who is now carrying on that legacy as a Special Education Para-Professional at the school. You couldn't shut Frank up about how proud he was of all his children. Known as Frank in town, he was known as "Dooty", "Daddy", and "Grandpa" to us. He was so much more than just our father - he was our whole world. He was the glue and light that guided us to who we are today. He ensured his daughters were self-sufficient, strong, intelligent women. He ensured his son was compassionate, intelligent, and resourceful. He always ended every conversation with "I love you" honey; and gave the biggest hug if you were there with him. He loved his sons-in-law, Ken, and Mat, and would sit and talk with them for hours. Who did he love the most though? His two "sponges" - his granddaughters; Alyson, and Brianna. Grandpa would spoil them every chance that he got! Despite interference from the family to "just say no" we ultimately knew that if the granddaughters asked, he would give them anything that they wanted. Known as Bus Driver Frank or Mr. Frank to many of the students at Fennville Public Schools, he loved being a bus driver - but loved his "kids" even more. Up until his passing, he still fondly recalled many of the students he had on his bus. If he was your bus driver, please know he loved you all and remembered each and every one of you. He didn't want a funeral - he wanted a celebration. The family will be scheduling a celebration of life, or "Frank's Party" in 2024. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, please make donations to The Fennville Public Schools Transportation Department in his name. Stevan Oakley

Stevan Richard Oakley, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully in his home on October 12, 2023, after a hard-fought battle with cancer. Born in Garden City, Michigan in 1958, Steve moved with his family to Lake City, MI in 1973. He excelled in football, basketball and track, receiving all-conference honors, and graduated as salutatorian of Lake City High School in 1976. More importantly, Steve met his soulmate and best friend Virginia Quist during this time. They married in 1977 and went on to celebrate 46 years of marriage. Together, they built a home in Douglas, Michigan, raised two beloved children, Alex and Kara, and delighted in their granddaughters, Lyla and Kallan. Steve earned a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from Western Michigan University in 1980 and was hired as an electrical engineer at Palisades Nuclear Plant, where he worked to ensure the safe, effective operation of the plant for more than 40 years. In 1984, he became one of the first System Engineering Supervisors, and in 1990 he earned his Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) License. He was also an Operations Procedure Supervisor and Sponsor, and used his expertise to teach electrical theory to aspiring license holders. Friend and colleague Dave Campbell recalls his encyclopedic knowledge of engineering, adding "Not only was he knowledgeable but his calm demeanor, non-condescending attitude, and willingness to share made him a great supervisor and fellow employee. " Steve's contributions to the Saugatuck-Douglas community were extensive. He served on the school board for Saugatuck Public Schools, and for more than a decade on the Saugatuck Douglas Library Board. Library Director Ingrid Boyer recalls how "Even after retiring from the board, Steve continued to support the library as a volunteer. He spent countless hours on the building site for the new library, overseeing work and advising the library director. His dedication to the project and engineering expertise were critical to the successful completion of the building. " Steve was a doer - happy when he was building or fixing something, sailing and working on their sailboat, building a barn and chicken coop, looking for cars, bicycles, or tools online. Friends, relatives, and neighbors could count on Steve to have the tools and advice they might need. Steve was always happy to be outside, puttering in the yard and woods, tapping trees and boiling maple syrup for neighbors and friends. Steve's top focus was his family. Steve gave his heart, time, and energy to his family, who knew they could count on him for support during times of both joy and difficulty. He loved holidays and family trips to New Mexico and Florida, riding roller coasters with his kids, and cycling, camping, and kayaking with Virginia. He held his family close with strength and comfort as they mourned the sudden passing of Alex in 2021. In recent years, he and Virginia found peace in nature, kayaking and going for caravan adventures with Alex's dog, Amari. Steve was also an active grandparent and enjoyed swimming with his granddaughters, watching their favorite TV shows, playing board games, and making them pancakes every morning when they were together. Steve taught his family so much about living, about taking risks and being adventurous. About being positive and living in the moment. About love and courage. Steve will be deeply missed, and his memory held close. Steve is survived by his wife Virginia Oakley; daughter Kara Bodine and son-in-law Erik Bodine; granddaughters Lyla and Kallan Bodine; siblings Karen (William Knarian) Oakley and Darrell Oakley; in-laws Karen Donnelly, Lois (Karl) Schripsema; nieces/nephews Jeff, Theresa, John, Laura, and Kenny. Lori Sue Derksen (Morgan), a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully in her Fennville, Michigan home on October 14, 2023, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on June 5, 1966, in Winter Garden, Florida, Lori was a vivacious spirit known for her love of family, nature, and life's simple pleasures. A native of Winter Garden, Lori's zest for life was evident from the start. She was the cherished daughter of the late Eddie and Shirley Morgan and the adored sister of Donna Fortier, Kimberly Morgan, Gene Morgan, twins Gail Phillips and Dale Morgan. Her family was a cornerstone of her existence, and she carried their love and teachings throughout her life. Lori was a devoted mother to her children, Michael Morgan, Kristy Morgan, Thomas Harrell, and Stephanie Harrell (Donte Williams). Her love for them was boundless, and she was their constant source of support and encouragement. Lori's joy multiplied with the birth of her grandchildren, Markus, Joel, Harmonie, Lillianna, and A'Mara. She was a doting grandmother, always ready with a warm hug, a listening ear, and a plate of homemade cookies. Her interests were as diverse and colorful as the gardens she loved to tend. Lori had a passion for being outside in the sunshine and near the water. She loved traveling, exploring new places with a sense of wonder and curiosity that was infectious. Her garden was a riot of colors, a reflection of her vibrant personality. She had a particular fondness for beautiful, colorful flowers, and she spent countless hours tending to them with loving care. Lori had a soft spot for animals, especially her dogs, Dobbie, Rarity, and Darby. They were her constant companions, always by her side, sharing in her joys and comforting her in times of sorrow. She also had a unique hobby of collecting clowns and lighthouses, a testament to her love for laughter and her guiding light in life. Lori had a great sense of humor and loved a good laugh. Her laughter was infectious, and she had the unique ability to find joy in the simplest things. Her positive outlook on life was inspiring, and she touched the lives of everyone she met with her warmth and kindness. In her 57 years, Lori Sue Derksen lived a life full of love, laughter, and beautiful memories. She will be remembered for her radiant smile, her generous heart, and her unwavering love for her family. Her spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her, and her memories will forever be a source of comfort and strength. As we say goodbye to Lori, we celebrate her life and the joy she brought into ours. She was a beacon of light in our lives, guiding us with her love and laughter. Her legacy will live on in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Helen Heckman

Helen Lorraine (Flowers) Heckman, 92 of Allegan, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 at Golden Orchards in Fennville, Michigan. Born December 10, 1930 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late James and Helen (Hornketh) Flowers. She graduated high school in Philadelphia in 1948. Went on and graduated in 1951 from the Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing and worked as an R. N. in Philadelphia, Illinois, West Virginia, and Michigan. She also attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois. Lorraine (as she was known to most) met and married William "Bill" Riley while working at the Pacific Garden Mission (Chicago, IL) in 1954. Bill was from St. Albans, West Virginia. They moved to Michigan in January of 1955 to establish the New Life Farms west of Otsego. Lorraine started employment at Allegan Health Center (now Ascension Borgess Allegan Hospital) in February of 1959. Bill Riley died in Allegan in November of 1968. Lorraine became the Director of Nursing for the Allegan Hospital from 1970 to 1975. She met and married Dean Brindley in Allegan on May 4, 1972. She moved her career to the Allegan County Health Department as a public health nurse from 1983 until her retirement in December of 1995. Lorraine served as a charter member of the Allegan Co. Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Council (Safe Harbor); was a member of the First Baptist Church of Allegan since the 1960's where she was involved in many activities; and in 1996 she held the position of Director and Coordinator of Partnership of Pine Trails Elementary School and Kids Hope, USA (First Baptist Church) mentoring program. Dean Brindley died in April of 2004. Lorraine stayed active through most of her life and was fortunate to marry one more time before her death. In March of 2007, Lorraine and Ken Heckman joined in marriage. Unfortunately, Ken died in May of 2012. Along with her parents, James and Helen Flowers; Lorraine was preceded in death by her three husbands, Bill Riley, Dean Brindley, and Ken Heckman; and her sister, Lee McWhorter. She is survived by four stepchildren, Cheri (Jon Sr. ) Watson, Nancy Mohler, Ted (Robin) Brindley, and Ted (Vickie) Heckman; nine step grandchildren; her sisters- and brothers-in law, Jim McWhorter, Gail Brindley, and Janet Ruch; as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Friends may meet with the family at the First Baptist Church of Allegan on Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, at which time the Funeral Service will begin, Pastor Nathan Smith officiating. Interment will take place in Oakwood Cemetery immediately following the service. Esther Marie Jorgensen died peacefully at home on October 2, 2023, among family and friends She was born Esther Marie Hoover to Belle and Alva Hoover on February 2, 1939, in Douglas, MI The younger of two daughters, Esther often joked that her mother expected a valentine but got a groundhog instead Her sunny childhood was interrupted by polio, which she contracted as an adolescent Esther spent many lonely months in isolation and remembered waving through the hospital window when her parents visited She emerged requiring arm crutches to walk, which would later be replaced by a wheelchair Esther graduated from Saugatuck High School and earned certification as a medical records librarian She worked at the Douglas Hospital where she met Karl Jorgensen They married on September 14, 1968, and after a short stay in Los Angeles, they settled in Fennville Although Karl and Esther had no children, they embraced their nieces, nephews, and descendants as their own along with Esther's "fur children" Jock, JJ, Puffy, Coconut, Cola, and Ginger Esther was both creative and artistic Whether decorating a cake, knitting a complex pattern, or fabricating a greeting card, her work was letter perfect Esther and her sister, Margaret, owned a retail knitting business called The Yarn Nook They also gave knitting lessons and made life-long friends among their students Karl and Esther spent many summers at their Tri Ponds vacation trailer Later they owned a home near Lakeland, Florida, enjoying family and friends in both locations Esther loved Christmas but was ready to head to sunny weather and blooming flowers the day after A charter member of the Community Church of Douglas, Esther's was the first wedding held there She served actively for many years cooking, baking, and producing for the bazaar It is thanks to Esther's donation that the church facility today enjoys an automatic entry door supporting wheelchair accessibility Esther lived a full life She made friends easily, enjoyed trying new things, a good laugh and a bit of mischief, and gave of herself with open hands and great love She is survived by nephew, Ron (Laurie) Edwards; niece, Sue Matthews; and nephew, David Edwards; grandniece, Michelle (Jimmy) Williams; and grandnephew, Rick (Sydney) Clark; great grandnephews and nieces, Al Jerome, Destiny, Hakeem, Martel, Heather, Matthew, Kaylie, and Madison; and great great grandnieces and nephews, Sophia, Gracelyn, Noah, Mileah, and Messiah Friends may meet with the family at Douglas Community Church on Friday, October 6, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the Celebration of Life beginning at 11:00 AM, Pastor Brandon Beebe and retired Pastor Dan Miller co-officiating A luncheon will follow the service and Esther will be laid to rest in Taylor Cemetery at 1:30 PM To to the family or in memory of Esther Marie (Hoover) Jorgensen, pleaseShow more
