Timothy Daly Smith (Tim) wrote his last "30" on Oct 2, 2023 He was husband to Jane, father to Randy (Lauren Boice), Rachel (James), and Bryan (Wendy) Without a doubt, though, his favorite role was Papa to Zeb, Dashiell, Ximin, Eliza, and Liam Tim and Jane married in 1967, celebrating 57 years together in June Tim was the oldest son of Ralph and Bettie Smith, brother to Greg (Carol), Jeff (Lisa), and Kevin (Karen) Tim was a proud graduate of Ohio State University (before they added "The"), where he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in Journalism He started at OSU as an engineering and then a biology major He took a journalism class because his fraternity brother, Keith McKnight, kept coming home from the Lantern, OSU's student newspaper, with wonderful stories After graduation, he spent the next several decades as a journalist He worked at the Painesville Telegraph, Columbus Dispatch and then UPI before going to work at the Akron Beacon Journal While there as the courts reporter, he covered the trial of a man who operated a pyramid scheme After daily court, he told Jane so often that he could do better than the trial lawyers that Jane signed him up to take the LSAT Tim graduated from the University of Akron School of Law in 1977, and passed the bar on his first attempt He always held that "I'm glad I passed the first time, because I wasn't taking it a second time!" After 19 years at the Beacon Journal, he transitioned careers, moving from the newspaper's managing editor to a full professorship at Kent State's School of Journalism Tim taught journalism for 28 years, and particularly loved teaching Media Law He served as faculty adviser to the campus Daily Kent Stater, did a stint as the interim Director of the School, and was a favorite professor to countless students who stayed in touch years after they graduated He was named a Kent State University Distinguished Teacher in 2000 In 1966, he won the John S Knight Award from the Buckeye Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists for exceptional service to the community through communications He traveled twice to China for Kent State, recruiting students there to attend KSU as international students At Kent, he founded the Center for Privacy and the First Amendment as a resource for reporters, particularly in Ohio, on public records and open meetings laws He also served as an expert witness In 1996, he took a sabbatical and clerked for Ohio Supreme Court Justice Craig Wright For many years, he served on the Portage County Public Defender Commission before stepping down to serve as interim PD for more than a year He didn't retire well, continuing to practice law with son Bryan, forming Smith and Son Law in 2010, and taking whatever cases came his way, as well as taking cases for the public defender His full resume doesn't fully encapsulate Tim, though He was a sage adviser to any student who had a problem, often asking for $1 if it was legal in nature, so that he was on retainer to protect the lawyer/client privilege He went to a journalism school that taught how to be a newspaperman He got to be in the newspaper business when newspapers cared about covering the news more than the bottom line He got to teach students how to do newspapering when it was hands-on more than theoretical And he loved being a lawyer More recently, knowing he had only a short time to live, he reflected, "I've had a good life A wonderful wife, three great kids and five wonderful grandchildren A couple of careers Newspaperman, professor of media law and was even a real lawyer " He also said he was immensely proud of his children, an astronomer, a gifted education teacher, and a bus transit executive Services will be held at the Kent United Methodist Church Oct 12 at 11 a m Visitation will be 9:30-11am at the church before services and after the service in Pierson Hall A luncheon will be served after the funeral A University of Akron Law Scholarship is being set up in his name to be given to night-time law students because both Tim and Bryan were graduated from it Checks can be sent to: Timothy D Smith Scholarship The University of Akron School of Law 150 University Ave Akron, Ohio 44325-2901 Attn : Andreas Ellis To Give Online:https://www uakron edu/law/giving/ Services of Bissler & Sons Funeral and Crematory, 628 W Main St, Kent, Ohio 44240 To to the family, please

Helen Y. DellaVecchia, 98, of Kent, OH, passed away on Saturday, December 2, 2023. She was born in Latrobe, PA on October 22, 1925 to the late Amato and Michelina Carbonara. In her younger years, Helen was a beautician. After starting a family, they relocated to Greenville, PA where she worked as a nurses aide at St. Paul Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Kent and St. Michael Catholic Church in Greenville, PA, where she volunteered extensively. Helen loved her family deeply and enjoyed cooking. She followed the Italian tradition of cooking special foods for each special holiday and passed that tradition on to her daughters, who in turn passed it on to their children. Helen will be deeply missed and always remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great grandmother. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph DellaVecchia; brothers, Andrew and Antonio Carbonara and her sisters Marie Gasbarro and Myrtle Carbonara. She is survived by her daughters, Toni DellaVecchia, Patti (Tom) Strosser and Nancy DellaVecchia; grandchildren, Joshua (Amy) Strosser, Luke (Tannaz) Strosser, Kristina (Tyler) Middleton and Sophia DellaVecchia; great grandchildren, Roman and Ethan Strosser and Novello Middleton and nieces and cousins in Latrobe, PA and Canada. Kevin Kerns, age 63 years, died unexpectedly at home in Kent, Ohio on November 28, 2023. He was born in Cleveland on September 12, 1960. Kevin was a lifelong learner who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology (University of Akron, Magna Cum Laude) and a Master of Arts degree in Public Affairs (Indiana University). He worked mostly in the transportation industry, including working as a truck driver for several companies and a school bus driver for Kent City Schools. He was proud to be chosen as a member of the national Safety Team when he was a driver for Overnight Transportation. Kevin embraced life fully. He was a loving spouse and father who was devoted to his family. His sons were a source of pride and becoming a father was one of the great joys of his life. Kevin loved the natural world, and hiking in green places was a spiritual and beloved activity for him. He also loved travel, and learning about other people, places, and their language as well as learning about different cultures and cuisines. He and his wife went hiking, birding, and camping in many US parks, and they also explored international destinations together. Kevin was also an excellent cook who enjoyed cooking dishes from around the world. He had a good heart, and he enjoyed helping people and bringing them happiness. Kevin was a good friend to many, and he especially cherished his participation with other men in the Mankind Project, his friends in the Spanish Meet-up, hiking with friends, and the friendships he made at the Unitarian Universalist church. He brought his sense of awe and gratitude to all that he did. Kevin was preceded in death by his father Ralph Charles Kerns and his mother Ellen Ann (Norton) Kerns. He also deeply missed his Aunt Phyllis Szesze and his father-in-law Richard Jackson who were like second parents to him. Kevin is survived by his wife Kathryn (Jackson) Kerns, his son Marine Corps 1st Lt. Noah Kerns, his son Alan Kerns, and his daughter-in-law Ally (Hahn) Kerns. He is also survived by his brother William Kerns and his partner Ann Baker, his mother-in-law Ruth (Theilmann) Jackson, his sister-in-law Susan (Jackson) Kildow and her sons Andrew and Daniel, and his brother-in-law Thomas Jackson and his wife Ann and son Richard. Kevin will be cremated at Bissler and Son Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent, Ohio. A memorial service has been scheduled for Wednesday, December 20, 2023 at 4:00PM in Hobbs Hall at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Kent (228 Gougler Avenue, Kent, OH 44240). Nancy Rhodes (nee Shaffer), age 69, of Kent, OH passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023 after a long battle with Pancreatic cancer. Nancy was born March 7, 1954 to Orville and Helen Shaffer, of Kent. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1972 and went on to spend her working years in the food service industry. She was very proud to have spent 30 years as a dietary aide at Kent Healthcare Center. Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Larry Shaffer; and her husband of 32 years, Arthur "Dusty" Rhodes. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer (John) Briggs of Kent; as well as her grandson, Matthew, who was the love of her life. Nancy was a devoted mother, and the proudest " " imaginable. She adored her family and would do anything to help a friend. Nancy's other loves were her pets, especially her beloved dachshund Fritz, and her poodle, Molly. Nancy loved everything Christmas, and will be remembered fondly for her elaborate cookie platters, and her "world famous" lasagna. Nancy will be sorely missed by so many. Robert W. "Bob" Loos, age 77, passed away on November 17th following a long illness. Bob loved his country and was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corp. He served in Vietnam and was awarded two Purple Hearts. He retired from Ohio Bell after 38 years of service. Bob was an avid golfer and loved his golfing buddies. He was a self-taught woodworker. He built many pieces of furniture for his family and was always available to assist with home improvements. He enjoyed coaching his kids in sports and never missed a game. He loved gardening and caring for animals. He was preceded in death by his loving son, Matthew Loos; parents, Bill and Martha Loos; in-laws Anthony and Mary Jo Mollica; sister-in-law Carolyn (Betty) Compton (nee Mollica); brothers-in-law, Michael and Tony Mollica; dear Bob Carlilse and special friend, Bill Cramer. Bob is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Mary Jo; son, Christopher; daughter, Kimatha and son-in-law George Hurst; sister, Sandra Smith (nee Loos); and nephew, Robin Smith. Special in life are his three granddaughters, Samantha, Holly, and Makayla, and beautiful daughter-in-law Sherry Loos (nee Baker).
