Kathleen Duncan

Kathleen Duncan

Age - 94

November 21, 2023

Kathleen H. Duncan September 18, 1929-November 17, 2023 Kathleen Hazel Duncan was born prematurely at Loma Linda Hospital on September 18, 1929. The only child of Carrie Leroy Stucker Lollar and Glen Lollar, Kathleen clung to life in an incubator for weeks. Determined Carrie, raised on a farm in Hotchkiss, Colorado, and intent on saving her tiny baby, walked to the hospital every day to nurture Kathleen. A miracle baby, Kathleen appreciated every day and was full of gratitude and joy in living for 94 years. She died at home peacefully on November 17. Kathleen received a fine educational start at a Seventh Day Adventist School and then public school in Norwalk, California. She graduated from Excelsior Union High School in 1947. During the Depression Kathleen's father Glen dug post holes and drove a slow-going delivery truck, before there were vast southern California freeways, for Alliance Dairy in Norwalk serving Arden Farms. Kathleen was allowed to ride on top of the 10-gallon milk cans and remembered being treated to ice cream at the end of the route. Her father opened Glen's Car Garage in 1941 and passed on to his daughter a life-long love of automobiles and much practical knowledge. She learned to drive in a 1937 Chevrolet coupe stick shift. A classic 1957 Thunderbird with port holes was a gift from her father. Kathleen married Chuck Koss in 1948 and they lived in Downey, however they divorced after two years ("we were too young" said Kathleen). She learned about hard work and resilience while working at a Super Burger restaurant, the Los Angeles Meat Company, and an office supply company in Santa Monica. After her father died in 1967, Kathleen learned cosmetology and for years she worked at the Beverly Hills Hotel and for a Palos Verdes salon specializing in "Sebring" cuts. During her years working in cosmetology, she encountered many clients in the entertainment industry: Fred Astaire, Steve Lawrence, Eydie Gorme, Audrey Meadows, Raquel Welch, Count Basie, and many others. A lifelong music and dancing enthusiast when Big Bands performed live, she danced to Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman music and heard Lionel Hampton and Frank Sinatra in person. Kathleen lived in Manhattan Beach when she decided to "move to the country" and Trinidad became her home in 1979. She met the love of her life, John Harvey Duncan, owner of Park Cafe and Big D RV Park (now Azalea Glen) while jogging to Patrick's Point State Park (Sumeg). John spotted the beautiful Kathleen and called to her to stop for a cup of coffee with "come on in, I just might change your life. " And he did. John, a career Army veteran who served in both World War II and the Korean War, and Kathleen were married on Valentine's Day 1982 in Mickey and Patti Fleschner's home and enjoyed 28 years together at their Park and later at their home off Scenic Drive until 2010 when John died at their home. Kathleen and John were active in the Greater Trinidad Chamber of Commerce and accommodated visiting fishermen at their wooded park with duck ponds, making many friends and hosting several outdoor hog roasts. Kathleen sang in Dottie Haukenberry's Trinidad Community Choir for 22 years, served as President of the Trinidad Civic Club, volunteered in the gift shop at Mad River Hospital for over 15 years, and was a life-long member of the Trinidad Museum Society, having served as its first secretary in the early 1980s. For 15 years she line-danced in Trinidad Town Hall with a group of friends. She and John shared many road trips and Army reunions. They traveled to Germany to visit the places where John captained tanks during World War II. The couple was grateful every day for the opportunities and freedoms afforded to citizens of the United States of America. Kathleen leaves behind an affectionate family of step-children: Lucille Annette "Tina" (James) Wilson of Magalia; Russell (Anita) Duncan of Whitesville, New York; Hal (Marsha) Duncan of St. Augustine, Florida; Brian Eric (Karen) Duncan of Las Vegas; Dustyn Marcus Duncan of San Francisco; and Bruce Allen (Michelle) Duncan of Salem, Oregon; step-grandchildren James Powell Wilson, Matthew (Martina) Wilson, Nicholas Parker (Melissa Jauregui) Duncan, Air Force Captain Keenyn Duncan. Kellyanne (James) Howarth, Tristram Duncan, Aaron (Lesley Jade) Duncan, Eric (Alison) Duncan, and Patty Reynolds; and step-great-grandchildren Austin Arnold Duncan, Hunter Rose Duncan, and Olivia and Charlotte Duncan. She was close to her cousins, Carolyn Moore of Norco, California, and daughter Jean (Brett) Burns, Glenda (Dave) Cowan of Emporia, Kansas, and Gale Penfield of Novato and to her Nevada family Sam (Shae) and Owen Lompa and Greg (Stephanie) and Corbin Lompa as well as friends Dr. Michael and Kathrin Burleson of Trinidad, Bill and Sue Scott, Kirsten Trump, Donna Haddock and her friend of 50 years, Patricia Fleschner and her children Ashley (Andrea) Fleschner and Michael David Fleschner of Portland, Oregon and Michael David and Gina Duvoisin Fleschner's children Sebastian, Eloise and Georgia Fleschner. Her friend since kindergarten, Polly (Chuck) Donley of Seal Beach, California, predeceased Kathleen, who introduced the Donleys when they were seniors in high school. Hospice of Humboldt has been exemplary in their care of Kathleen since October 31. Tina Wilson has been a constant and kind companion for over a month, and Anita Duncan flew from New York to lovingly care for Kathleen as well. Hazel Juell

Hazel Juell

Age - 95

November 9, 2023

On Tuesday, October 24, 2023, at the age of 95, the magical, hilarious, spectacular Hazel Juell passed away. She was born the third of seven children and raised on her family's farm in Coudersport, Pennsylvania. After skipping two grades she graduated high school at 16 and took off solo to California to join her sister and Uncle. She acquired work and enrolled in Humboldt College. She found college didn't captivate her; higher education would have to wait. She had met Leonard Juell and he captured her heart. Together they created an amazing life for the next 62 years. She would tell you that she was a life-long learner. I would add that she was an entrepreneur, the center and matriarch of our family, and in all areas of her life, she built community. Her answer to loneliness or a need in a new community was to create a social group. In Korbel it was a beer brewing group in her basement (probably illegal then). In Leggett she started a sewing group and a Sunday school. Then she saw the need for a church and organized the locals to build the First Presbyterian Church of Leggett. With an infant, a toddler, and a young child, she packed up the family and moved to Leggett from Korbel to open and run The Famous One Log House, a gift shop along the Redwood Highway. Leonard had always wanted to be a business owner but he was still teaching school so in her competent manner, she orchestrated the move herself. For years she ran her successful business, raised her three children, and was supportive and active in her church and community. At 35, she surprised Leonard with their fourth and last child. As her children aged and became more independent her quest for higher education became a priority again. She went back to Humboldt State University and graduated with her Bachelor of Science degree side by side with her oldest daughter Jeanette. Then she went on to her Masters in Psychology so she could pursue her career as a Marriage, Family, and Child Counselor. So many people have benefitted from her sage advice, 50 minutes per session. Ever present, the drive for knowledge energized her to pursue her Doctorate at the University of San Francisco. To whooping cheers from her family, she walked across the stage and accepted the award for Dissertation of the Year for her doctoral thesis. Now with her career in full swing, she looked for a community amongst her peers. She leased a large Victorian in Eureka and started Bayview Institute, a group practice of therapists and a place of healing and camaraderie. At the age of 86, she finally retired from her practice and settled into a life of gardening, bridge, writing groups, church choir, and deep conversations with many friends accompanied by her famous Manhattans. She loved to share ideas, cherished her many "talking companions", and loved everything that grows, from personal growth, emotional growth, friendships, and babies, to her vast variety of succulents and begonias. She was preceded in death by her husband Leonard Juell, her parents, and five siblings. She is survived by: her sister Mary Gage, her four children Stacey Juell (Sue), Jeanette Addis (Mike), Greg Juell (Barb), and Kristine Juell, her five grandchildren Tara Juell, Addie Juell, Ericson Juell, Sara Felsenthal (Noah), and Ben Trump (Michelle), and two great-grandchildren Alder and Coen Felsenthal. Public viewing will be on November 1, 2023, from 4:00 - 7:00 at Paul's Mortuary in Arcata. A funeral service will be held at her church, the Arcata Presbyterian Church on November 2, 2023, at 12:30 with internment immediately following at Greenview Cemetery in Arcata. All her beloved friends and family are welcome to attend. To to the family or in memory of Hazel Juell, pleaseShow more

Sherri Miller

Sherri Miller

Age - 76

November 9, 2023

Sherri L. Miller (Jacoby) passed away peacefully on Sunday afternoon, October 22, 2023, surrounded by her family. Sherri was born in New York City in 1946 to Manny and Vivian Jacoby. The family moved to California when she was an infant. She grew up in Southern California with her brother Michael. She graduated from Reseda High School and in 1965 married Wayne Miller. They had two children, Karen and Marc. The family enjoyed many backpacking adventures in the Sierra Nevada mountains, motorcycle riding, and many trips to the beaches of Southern California. The family moved to Crescent City, CA in 1975. She worked for the Del Norte Triplicate during her time in Crescent City. She always had a love of horses since she was a little girl and finally realized her dream of having her own, along with a myriad of other animals. After moving a few times, the family moved to Arcata in 1981 where she attended Humboldt State University to obtain a degree in Wildlife Biology. She went on to receive a Master's Degree in Wildlife Biology. She worked at the Arcata Union during her time in college, all the while raising two teenagers, which was not an easy feat. After graduation, Sherri went on to become a Wildlife Biologist for the U. S. Forest Service, Redwood Sciences Laboratory. During her time at USFS, she worked for the Klamath and Humboldt Bay Bird Observatories in Arcata. She brought her delight in the natural world and keen observer's eye to many important studies throughout northern California, Oregon, and Alaska including monitoring Marbled Murrelets on land and in nearshore waters, American Dippers in streams, and various species of land birds with censuses and banding. She published many important papers on her observations in prestigious scientific publications and received awards from the Forest Service and ornithological societies for her ground-breaking work. She was a kind mentor and role model to many young biologists and provided sage advice to all who were fortunate enough to work with her. Sherri loved all birds. Even on her days off, you could find her out in the field bird watching. Sherri and her husband, Wayne, spent many days on the rivers canoeing. It became their passion. She lost her husband of 28 years in 1994. In 1997, Sherri met the second love of her life, Bill Hogoboom, and a whole new set of adventures began. They bought a Sportmobile van and traveled to the remotest parts of the Western US with their dogs, always looking for the best fishing spot. She was an accomplished fly fisher. She would often take trips with her son Marc to fish. They both had a passion for the sport. After meeting Bill, she learned to kayak. They took many kayaking trips on rivers in the US, including the Colorado (Grand Canyon), Rogue, Trinity, Cal Salmon, and Eel Rivers (just to name a few). They also kayaked rivers in Ecuador and New Zealand. She definitely enjoyed life. She was always up for any adventure and would try anything at least once. She became an accomplished weaver, always striving to get better. She made an array of baby blankets, table runners, kitchen towels, belts, and scarves. We always loved getting something she created on her looms. Sherri is survived by her husband of 25 years, Bill Hogoboom, her brother Michael (Linda) Jacoby, her daughter Karen Quenell and son-in-law Steve Quenell, her son Marc Miller and daughter-in-law Angie, her two grandchildren, Lindsay (Taylor) Thompson and Tyler (Maggie) Watkins. She is also survived by two great-grandchildren, with another on the way. Sherri is preceded in death by her first husband Wayne Miller and her parents Vivian and Manny Jacoby. Sherri was an adventurer always embracing life even when life wasn't kind. She was a beautiful person inside and out and always cared about others. We will miss her tremendously but know that she is no longer in pain and is at peace. There will be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, October 29, 2023, from 1 p. m. to 3 p. m. at the Moonstone Beach House. Please bring your stories to celebrate this amazing woman. Food and beverages will be provided. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations to support the Humboldt County Animal Shelter be sent via Dog Rescuers (follow the link for "how you can help", please specify for Emergency Medical Fund or EMF), via PayPal @friendsforlife707, or mail to Friends for Life, P. O Box 962, Eureka, CA 95502; specify for EMF, in remembrance of Sherri Miller. There is also a wish list for the shelter animals created by Redwood Pals Rescue at this link. If you are able to honor dear Sherri and her deep love of animals by making a contribution of any amount, it is very appreciated. To to the family or in memory of Sherri Lynn Miller, pleaseShow more

Daniel Jackson

Daniel Jackson

Age - 70

November 6, 2023

Daniel Patrick Jackson passed away peacefully on Oct. 20, 2023, after a prolonged battle with Kennedy's Disease. He was born on August 17, 1953, to Gerald (Judd) and Claire Jackson, and was number 9 of 11 children. As a lifelong Humboldt County resident, he had fond memories of growing up in Eureka and being one of the youngest in such a large family, playing with his siblings and cousins in the redwood forest which served as their backyard playground. As a small child, he was lucky to cultivate lifelong friendships with Dave Turner and Richard Hurst, where they shared numerous adventures throughout childhood and into adulthood. He was a true outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and exploring nature. He graduated from high school in 1971, and enlisted in the Army in 1973. That same year, he married Karen Bottemiller. Together, they moved to Bamburg, Germany, where he served in the military for three years and finished his military career in 1979. After returning to Humboldt County, Dan and Karen had three children, Jenny, Justin, and Ryan. Becoming a father was one of the biggest highlights of his life. The family enjoyed countless wonderful memories up at Trinity Lake, boating and water skiing with friends, spending time at the family cabin in Willow Creek, and snow skiing at Mt. Shasta and Mt. Bachelor in the winter. Following in his father Judd's footsteps, he worked at Twin Parks Lumber Company until it shut down. He went on to work for the Northern California Log Scaling Bureau in Sacramento, and then Simpson Timber Company in Korbel. In 1983, he transitioned his career to the United States Post Office to work as a mail carrier. He would continue in this role until he was no longer able to work. He loved delivering mail and socializing with people along his route. He was fondly referred to as "Dan the Mailman" and was adored by those on his route. This was especially evident during the holidays, when he would come home with endless treats and baked goods as a thank-you for his hard work. He was a loyal member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Arcata and a proud brother of the Knights of Columbus, serving as a Grand Knight. Originally joining in December of 1984, he was especially proud to receive a proclamation honoring his devoted service among his Brother Knights of Monsignor Nugent Council 2947. He loved being part of the community and spent countless hours helping put on their annual luaus and crab feeds, often pulling in his family members and friends for additional support and enjoyment. Dan and Karen separated in 1990 but have continued to come together and share in their children and grandchildren's lives through sports, holidays, and special events. He married Virginia Bass in 1994 and they enjoyed spending time in Redwood Creek and up at Trinity Lake, juggling the fun and chaos of bringing up four little boys very close in age. Despite their separation in 2004, they remained friends and Dan served as another father figure to her two sons, Jason and Jared, treating them just like his own. He shared the last 18 years with his partner, Joy Finley. They spent a lot of time in Clear Lake and enjoyed going to Konocti Resort for live music, some of their favorites being Heart, Charlie Daniels Band, and the Beach Boys. He loved country music, classic rock, and anything vinyl. Dan was a wonderful gardener with quite a green thumb. He was especially gifted with roses, his favorite garden flower, and had a knack and passion for flower arranging. He absolutely loved watching old western shows and this was often the only thing on the TV, with the news mixed in for good measure. An adventurer at heart, he had a keen sense of direction. He blazed his own trail and wasn't afraid to do things his way. His nickname was thus appropriately coined "Sarge" and he maintained this throughout his life and even through his final days. Most of all, he was a humble, kind, generous, and proud man who loved his family dearly. He especially loved being a grandpa and was so proud of all his children and grandchildren. Daniel is preceded in death by his parents, Gerald (Judd) and Claire Jackson, and his brothers Richard Jackson and John Jackson. He is survived by his long-time partner, Joy Finley, daughter Jenny Bowen (Greg), sons Justin Jackson and Ryan Jackson (Josie), step sons Jason Wattle and Jared Wattle (Brittany), grandchildren Ashlyn Bowen, Taylor Bowen, Boyd Jackson, and step-grandchildren Robert Wattle, Bransen Wattle, and Cooper Wattle. He is also survived by his brother Jerry Jackson and seven sisters, Linda Williams, Jo Ann Rossen (Rick), Diane Heinl (Richard), Mary Vallee, Sharon Simpson (Dave), Donna Gervase (Mark), Carolyn Griffith (Doug) and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. A viewing will be held on Thursday, November 9 at Paul's Chapel in Arcata from 4-6 p. m. , with the Rosary beginning at 6 p. m. The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, November 10 beginning at 11 a. m. at St. Mary's Church in Arcata. A burial ceremony, including the Honor Guard, will directly follow the Mass at St. Mary's Cemetery in Arcata. All those who knew and loved him are invited to attend any or all of the services, with a reception following. To to the family or in memory of Daniel P Jackson, pleaseShow more
