James Hanna

James Hanna

Age - 83

November 22, 2023

James Henry "Jim" Hanna was born in South Chatham, Massachusetts on September 23, 1940 to Helen Marion and William Hanna. Our beloved husband, father, Pawpaw, and friend passed away November 20, 2023 in Lawton, Oklahoma at the age of 83. Jim grew up and went to school in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help his family. He worked many jobs during his early years. He joined the Army at 19 and retired in June of 1980 with the rank of Sergeant First Class after 21 years of service as a communications chief. He was very proud of his military career and being a soldier. He married the love of his life, Lucille Stevens, on July 3, 1963 at the New Post Chapel at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. They were married for 60 years. Lucille was always by his side throughout his life. Jim never lost sight of an education. He received his GED while in the army. He later went to eight years of night classes at Cameron University, while holding down a full-time job, and raising three children (Linda, Jack and Earleen (his sister-in-law). He graduated from Cameron University in 1989 with a history degree. He wanted to set an example for his children that hard work pays off and it is easier to finish school at a younger age. He was very proud of his accomplishments. When he retired from the Army, he went to work for Southwest Sales for a short time. He then went to work for Civil Service at Fort Sill as an instructor in the communication department in Burleson Hall, until the school went to Georgia in 1993. He then ended his working career with a long line of positions in the Lawton Public Schools, retiring as a supervisor of the grounds crew in 2010. He volunteered throughout his children's school days for fund raisers or whatever they were involved in at the time. He was always ready to help anyone, especially his family. He volunteered at Comanche County Memorial to assist amputees to better understand and adapt to life after the loss of a limb (he lost his leg in 2011 to diabetes). He also served several years on the Lawton City Council, representing Ward 2, where he was well respected. Jim is survived by his wife Lucille of 60 years, his daughter Linda Hanna of Tulsa, Oklahoma, his son Jack Hanna and wife Traci, Lawton, his grandchildren Zachary Hanna and fiancee Jewell Lee of Florida, Addison Hanna, Marcheenan Hanna and fiancee Emily Salinas, and great granddaughter, Eryiah Hanna, Lawton, his special sister in law Earleen and husband Paul Parks, Jr. of Overland Park, Kansas. , his brother in law Jerry and wife Karen Stevens, their children, Jessica, Katie, LeeAnn of Flower Mound, Texas, many many others he considered his children, and a host of relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Betty Brock, and his beloved mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jack and Wilda Ross. He received many awards in his lifetime. His greatest reward was seeing his children and grandchildren grow up and be successful. In the last 12 years he had many health issues, but never gave up. Now he is at peace with no pain in the arms of our Heavenly Father. His rewards are now in Heaven. We would like to thank all the Doctors, nurses and staff at Comanche County Memorial Hospital, Reynolds Fort Sill Medical Clinics, and the Lawton-Fort Sill Veterans Center for all their loving care. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Jim would want you to donate to a special charity of your choice or help a Veteran.
