Raymond Laverne Stone passed away Friday, November 24th, 2023, at Gordon Countryside Care Nursing Home. He was born October 17, 1936, in Custer County, Nebraska. As a young boy he lived with his family on a farm near Comstock, Nebraska. Ray grew up hunting and fishing in Custer County where he had access to creeks and rivers. He was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his lifetime. He graduated high school in Comstock and went on to Kearney State College. Later he earned his Masters and Education Specialist degrees from Chadron State College. Subsequently he taught school and coached at Thedford, Nebraska, then Mullen, Nebraska, and moved to Gordon, Nebraska in 1964. He taught and coached and soon became the High School Principal where he stayed until he retired in the 1990’s. All in all, he spent 40+ years in education. On August 29, 1956, he married June B. Chrisp at a country church (Lillian Church of Christ, Broken Bow, Nebraska). They were married 64 years. He enjoyed family, hunting, fishing, gardening vegetables, golfing, and camping in his retirement years. He attended church services with his wife June Stone at the Church of God and enjoyed singing with the choir. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Alice Stone, his wife June B. Stone and grandson, Travis Brown. Survivors include his two sons - Randy Stone (Gordon, NE) and Brian Stone (Gering, NE), and three daughters - Sheryl Brown (Lincoln, NE), Tammy Stone (Lincoln, NE) and Brenda Stone (Gering, NE), 13 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Services held at 10am, Monday, December 4, 2023, at Gordon Church of God. He will be laid to rest with his wife at the Gordon Cemetery. Frances Hettie Whitney (Tvrs) was born May 10, 1938 in Chadron Hospital. She passed away peacefully in Chadron Hospital on October 17th, 2023. She was the second child of Benjamin H. Whitney and Elizabeth Margaret Ann Whitney (Elsberry). She was born on her Aunt Francis Schildhauer’s 21st birthday, and they named her after her Aunt Frances. Her older brother David was excited to be a big brother. She was raised on her family farm south of Hay Springs. She attended the Banner School then graduated from Hay Springs High School. In 1955 she met Richard (Dick) Tvrs, dated and were married on March 4, 1956. Dick joined the Army and the couple moved to Camp Hanford, in Richland Washington. After his Army service the family moved to San Diego California. The couple had three children Robert, Teresa and Jane. They raised the children in Santee, were active in their church, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. They made many lifelong friends and enjoyed camping with their friends. They returned to the Midwest in 1975 to be closer to their family. Fran had many careers during her life, was a lifelong learner always challenging herself and succeeding. In the late 80’s she returned to Chadron. She found love again with Chuck Arthur in the late 80’s and they settled just outside of Chadron. Chuck & Fran enjoyed dancing, camping, fishing, gardening, traveling and visits to the grandkids. Fran loved to garden, spoil her pets, camp and spend time with family. She was always so proud of her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by Richard Tvrs, Brother David Whitney, daughter Sandra Moore of Fullerton, NE, son Robert Tvrs of Tioga, TX , and grandchildren Beth Ann Gordon and Lewis Gordon III of Virginia Beach, VA. Fran is survived by Charles (Chuck) Arthur of Chadron, daughter Teresa Tvrs James of Escondido, CA, sister Jane Gordon (Lewis II) of Virginia Beach, VA, daughter in law Jan Sutherland Tvrs of Tioga, TX, Granddaughter Whitney Plotkin (Casey), Grandson Nicholas James (Fernanda), Granddaughter Lacey Covey (Johnny) of Hemingford, NE, Granddaughter Mischelle Little (Jody) and Grandson Benjamin of Oregon and great-grandchilden.Show more

SANDRA K BRODRICK Lifelong Chadron resident Sandra K Brodrick passed away September 1, 2023. Sandy was born at Chadron community Hospital on November 5, 1950 to Jim and Vada Regan. She joined older sister Penny; the family later grew to include siblings Rhonda and Jim. Sandy attended Chadron City Schools: Kenwood Elementary School, Chadron Middle School and Chadron High School. In 1982 she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Chadron State College. After graduating from college, she embarked on a 30-plus year career at Pine Ridge Job Corp, where she was able to have an impact on the lives of hundreds of students. She also had the opportunity to travel with students to other parts of the US, spending many summers with students at forest fire locations across the western US. She retired the Job Corp in 2015. Sandy married Daniel J Tobin and the couple had two children, Tracy and Susan. Sandy and Dan later divorced, and on February 22, 1973, she married Donald G (Donnie) Brodrick. The couple had four sons: Alex, Samuel, David and Nathan. Sandy had a wide variety of interests including crafting, gardening, and genealogical research. She was known for having strong opinions on a variety of subjects, and for her love of animals. Over the years her pets included racoons, ferrets, dogs, cats, goats, horses, birds, the odd reptile (or 2), as well as Bob the miniature donkey, who is a local celebrity. Sandy devoted much of her life to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sandy is survived by siblings Rhonda (Rob) Grantham of Crawford and Jim Regan of Chadron; children Tracy Brodrick of North Liberty, IA; Susie Brodrick of Cape Coral, FL; Alex Brodrick of Lincoln, NE; Sam Brodrick of Chadron; David (Hazel) Brodrick of Chadron; grandchildren Kristen Allen, Dylan Barnes, Alex Jr, Allen, Sammie, Max, Felix, Lyam, Willow, Adora; and 5 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Jim and Vada Regan, sister Penny Geist, husband Donnie and son Nathan Lee. Per her request, no services are planned.Show more

Delbert (Del) Edwin Hussey, 86, passed away peacefully at his home south of Chadron on September 6, 2023. Del was born to Lloyd and Eva (Mann) Hussey on August 28, 1937 in Chadron, NE and grew up on a ranch 20 miles south of town. He attended Table Center rural school and graduated from Chadron High School in 1955. Del married his high school sweetheart Aletta Schmechel of Whitney, NE on June 14, 1956. Shortly after, they moved to Weston, WY where he worked on a 160-section ranch 60 miles north of Gillette, WY. To this union, two daughters were born, Deborah Dee and Cindy Rania. Later in 1961, the family moved back to Chadron where he worked on a ranch north of town. In 1964 Del moved his family to town and enrolled at Chadron State College, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Education in 1967. He taught business courses at Chadron High School for two years before spending the next 33 years assisting students at Chadron State College. In 1972, Del also earned a Masters of Science in Business Education. Delbert began his career at CSC as the Director of Financial Aid, for 25 years he helped numerous students achieve their educational goals. In 1994, he developed and served as Director of the Cooperative Education and Internship program. While in this position for 8 years, Del was fortunate to renew acquaintances with many of the former students, who by then were managing businesses and agencies that hosted the interns. He retired from CSC in the fall of 2002. One year prior to his retirement, in 2001, Del and Aletta moved south of Chadron, near Chadron State Park. They were fortunate to purchase the land that Delbert's great-great grandfather homesteaded in 1884. His love for the outdoors kept him active and he immediately named his new home, "critter country" because of the wildlife. Del served on the boards of the Chadron Public Schools Foundation, the CSC Alumni Association, and the Chadron Federal Credit Union. He participated in Ride the Ridge for many years because of his love for horseback riding. Del and Aletta were actively involved and sponsored events within the Dawes County 4-H programs because they followed the progress and success of the participants. The Hussey's received the CSC Family Tree Award in 2005 due to the many generations that attended Chadron State College. In 2014, The Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation Good Neighbor Award was presented to Del and Aletta because they enjoyed helping friends. Delbert was involved in setting up Bluebirds Across NE at Chadron State Park in order to establish bluebirds in northwest NE. Several bluebird houses are present on the trails within the park. He participated in the preparation of the Thursday night suppers at the American Legion and was very proud of his job, peeling potatoes. He was a long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church because his faith was very important to him. He enjoyed starting the wood stove for coffee hour prior to the service because of the wonderful visits he had with friends during this fellowship. Del had many hobbies which included hiking, camping, fishing, reading, and horseback riding. He was always excited to receive a phone call from friends asking him to move cattle or any activity that allowed him to help others. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Aletta; daughter Cindy Everett; granddaughters Shawna (Scott) Bolejack and Nicole (Justin) Thompson; grandson Travis (Shayla) White; brother Fred (Frances) Hussey; many cousins, nieces, nephews; six great-grandchildren; and many, many friends. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Deborah Dee White. A Service in Celebration and Thanksgiving for the Life of Delbert will be held at Grace Episcopal Church in Chadron on September 12, 2023 at 10:00 am with Dr. Russ Seger officiating. Inurnment will be at Greenwood Cemetery followed by a lunch at the church. A memorial has been established for the Chadron Public Schools Foundation or the Hussey Family Memorial Scholarship at Chadron State Foundation.
