Len was born in 1930 and raised in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston with his 3 younger brothers and many close cousins. He attended Northeastern University and was the first person in his family to graduate college. After serving briefly in the Air Force, Len started his own business in Quincy - Car Storage of Boston - where he met and married Carol [Szczesny] Williams, had 2 children (in addition to the 2 children he had several years prior) and lived in Brookline briefly before moving to Needham in 1972, where he'd live for the rest of his life. Len eventually took a job with his cousin's company, The Interface Group, where he acted as Vice President of Operations for the next 20 years. He and his second [former] wife Marianne [Martori] Goodman enjoyed many years of traveling the world for work and pleasure, and Lenny continued to devote most of his free time to playing golf [at the Framingham Country Club] and enjoying the great view of Fenway that his Red Sox season tickets provided. An avid handball player for most of his life, Len skied around New England as a young man and dabbled in photography, but in his later years there was no doubt his most fulfilling and important pastime was being with his grandchildren - visiting them at their homes; watching them splash around in his pool; snuggling up on the couch to watch TV; encouraging ice cream after dinner whenever possible; passing along his 'Don't be a bozo!' mantra to the next generation; and just hearing his 'best little and big pals' talk about their lives. Len was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Rachel [Tonkin] Goodman; his youngest brother Richie Goodman of Randolph; many dear cousins; and a lifetime of close friends, including Ron Wood of Anchorage, Alaska. William Ewald

William Ewald

Age - N/A

November 21, 2023

William Ewald, in Weston, MA, on Nov 19, 2023. Beloved husband for 59 years of Margret (Scheuer) Ewald, devoted father to his sons and their spouses Oliver and Negin Ewald and Michael and Laurie Ewald, and dear grandfather of Leyla, Max, Caroline, and Cate. William was born and raised in Mulheim-Ruhr, Germany, and after high school served an apprenticeship with Siemens before embarking on a worldwide journey which led some to believe he was an international spy. Indeed, he was once described as an "expensive-smelling German businessman" in the San Francisco Chronicle by columnist Herb Caen, and his lifelong love of languages served him well. He began his foreign postings in Kenya selling Bosch spark plugs to local automotive garages and proudly "imported" his eventual wife from Germany during this time. He eventually switched to pharmaceutical sales with Upjohn, moving to Beirut, Lebanon, for two years and then on to Korea for another five. Professionally, he made one more move, to Bayer, for whom he moved his family to Tokyo, Japan; San Francisco, CA; back to Germany; and eventually Fairfield, CT, before finally retiring back to northern California with Margret. As both their sons and their families had settled in the Boston area, William and Margret moved to Weston about a decade ago, reluctant to leave their friends and encounter snow. William had a longtime love of music, owning and regularly playing a variety of instruments, and especially enjoyed playing the trumpet with his local jazz band. Regular discussion groups in his Highland Meadows community also brought him joy. Finally, he adored his grandchildren and queried them constantly about the goings on in their lives. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of William can be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, P. O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030 (donate. doctorswithoutborders. org).Show more

After beginning his post-high school education at York Junior College, Levere transferred to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he received his B. S. in 1955. After graduation, he worked at Raytheon as a microwave magnetron design and development engineer for three years before moving to Palo Alto, California, to earn his Ph. D. in Physics from Stanford University, where he began to focus on quantum electrodynamics. Levere was a post-doctoral research associate at Yale University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Minnesota. When in Minneapolis, he married Dorothy. In 1967, they moved to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, for Levere to join the physics department at Wilkes University, where he ultimately was promoted to be a full professor. During his years at Wilkes, Levere spent multiple sabbaticals as a visiting professor at Michigan State University, Yale, and Cornell. In 2013, Levere and Dorothy moved to Newton, Massachusetts, to be near family. Physics research was Levere's very favorite activity. He focused on applying the Coulomb Green's function he developed in his Ph. D. dissertation as a useful tool in the Lamb shift calculation and also investigating new concepts in relativistic quantum theory. His work led to a total of twenty-six papers in major physics journals such as Journal of Mathematical Physics, Physical Review, and Annals of Physics. Dorothy Upton

Dorothy Upton

Age - 86

November 19, 2023

Dorothy Anne Upton, age 86, passed away on November 17, 2023, at the Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham, Massachusetts. Born in the Queens borough of New York City on August 21, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Mary Anne (Devlin) Steinke. Dorothy spent the early years of her life in Annapolis, Maryland, before moving to the sunny shores of Honolulu, Hawaii, where she attended and graduated from McKinley High School. After graduating, Dorothy returned to Maryland to attend one of the nation’s oldest and finest nursing schools, the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in Baltimore. Once Dorothy received her bachelor’s degree and passed her licensure boards, she took a position with the Johns Hopkins Hospital. She was an excellent nurse and quickly rose through the ranks to become Head of Pediatric Nursing. As Head of Pediatric Nursing, Dorothy ensured that all the young girls and boys at the hospital were safe, comfortable, and well cared for by herself and the staff she managed. One day, in the summer of 1964, Dorothy was at a quaint restaurant when met Richard D. Upton. They pair had an instant connection and it was clear to everyone that they were meant for each other. Their love was truly a love at first sight. Dorothy and Richard’s whirlwind courtship turned into an engagement eleven days later. The couple traveled to Walpole, Massachusetts where Richard’s family resided and on February 19, 1965, Dorothy married the love of her life Richard at Saint Mary's Church in East Walpole, Massachusetts. The newlyweds made their married home in Walpole for a number of years before setting down roots in the neighboring town of Norwood, Massachusetts, ready to raise a family. Dorothy embraced the prospect of motherhood with open arms, and she and Richard would add Amy, Laurie, and Christopher to their growing family over the years. When Dorothy wasn’t doting on her family, she worked at the Ellis Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Norwood, caring for the patients there with her tender touch. Dorothy would also fill in as a Nurse for the Norwood School System as needed, taking temperatures, bandaging little knees, and comforting the sick school children. In her free time, Dorothy enjoyed curling up with a good book. She was an avid reader, who loved to get lost in a story, with the rest of the world fading into the background as she became engrossed in the plot. Dorothy also loved to garden, and her green thumb helped to plant and grow the beautiful flowers that blossomed around her house every year. Most of all, Dorothy loved spending time with her family, who were her pride and joy. As time went on, and her children grew up, Dorothy took on a new role that came with the best title, that of "Grammy". Dorothy was ecstatic when she learned she was going to be a grandmother; as children are wonderful, but grandchildren are even better. Out of all the roles that Dorothy held in her life that of Grammy was arguably her favorite. She loved to spend time with her grandchildren, whether it was sharing stories over a meal, or enjoying time together in the garden, every moment was as precious and special as the next. Beloved wife of Richard Upton. Loving mother of Amy Elizabeth Parlon and her husband Paul of North Attleboro, Laurie and her husband Michael , and Christopher Richard Upton and his wife Tricia of Norwood. Cherished grandmother of Caitlin Parlon, Patrick Parlon, Emma Upton, and Ryan Upton. Dorothy’s family would like to acknowledge the compassion, care, and skill of Sharon Christie, who was her caretaker and friend. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend Dorothy's Life Celebration on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm in the James H. Delaney & Son Funeral Home, 48 Common Street, Walpole. All are invited to gather for a Funeral Home Service on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 10:00 AM. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery.
