Age - 95
November 21, 2023
Alice Mary Bruce Hall was born in Camden, New Jersey on June 10th, 1928. She passed away peacefully in Bremerton, Washington on November 16th, 2023. She had a tough childhood; her home at age 5 was an orphanage and at age 12 she was taken in by a foster family who became her real family. She is survived by her husband, Charlie; children Chuck (Pat), Richard (Nancy), John (Corena) and Lisa Taylor (Bob). She is also survived by eight grandchildren (Nathan, Katie, David, Joe, CJ, Lauren, Sarah, Megan), seven great grandchildren (Isabella, Brogan, Daniel, Vaughn, Sara, Amber and Chris) and two sisters, Judith Allen and Paula Plofchan. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Mary Alice (Chuck), great grandson Gabriel, sister Rosemary Esquivel, brothers Bill Grimberg and John Grimberg, and birth brothers Francis (Buzz) Bruce and Bill Bruce, mother Rosalie Grimberg and father Bill Grimberg. After graduating from St. Mary's High School in Williamsport, PA, Alice began working at the Bell Telephone Company. It was during this time that Alice met the love of her life, Charlie Hall. His was the only name on her dance card, and they ended up having the adventure of their lives in the decades following their first encounter. They eloped in December 1947, packed up whatever belongings they had into their 1929 Model A Ford, and raised a family together for the decades to come. While the kids were young, they enjoyed many family trips to various places including Marco Island, Florida, Kentucky Lake, Kentucky, Niagara Falls, the Rocky Mountains, and the Pickerel River in Canada. Later in life they gathered the family together regularly to meet at Cannon Beach, Oregon, where we shared a lot of laughter and created many fond memories over the years. Their greatest joy always was family, and this was Alice's devotion. She was a mother, grandmother, sister, friend, aunt and more - without a minute of looking like she couldn't handle it all with ease. She gave, expecting nothing in return, giving of herself freely and with absolute love - always sending visitors away with a batch of homemade peanut butter bars, zucchini bread, pumpkin bread, cookies, applesauce made from scratch and many more treats. She and Charlie hosted numerous Thanksgivings for the family and nobody's turkey dinner could hold a candle to that of Alice's. Alice had many hobbies over the years and loved to take walks, read, work in her garden and play card games. In her younger years, she belonged to a Bridge group and met regularly with her girlfriends to play cards and chat over coffeecake. She also volunteered in many church activities including Meals on Wheels. When she and Charlie moved to Spokane, WA in 1978, they loved exploring the surrounding beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Alice regularly picked huckleberries at Mt. Spokane with a neighbor friend, and we all benefited from her delicious homemade huckleberry ice cream and pancakes. Other hobbies she took up after moving to Washington state included cross country skiing and bike riding, and in her later years she regularly swam at a local community pool where she met many good friends. She is famous for her beautiful hand knitted Christmas stockings and tree skirts of which she created hundreds over the years for family and friends. When asked about the number of hours spent on that hobby, she would always say it was a labor of love. After Charlie left his career in the retail business, he and Alice worked side by side as independent sales reps with customers throughout the Pacific Northwest. This allowed them to travel and explore the region while working hard as business partners. Once they officially fully retired, they expanded their travels to places like Alaska, British Columbia, Scotland, England, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Costa Rica, Greece, the Panama Canal, the Caribbean, Rome, Turkey, Spain, Portugal, the Madeira Islands and many more. In their lifetime together, Alice and Charlie lived in numerous places and made their home for the past 27 years in Port Orchard, WA. Here they had close friendships with neighbors and their beloved friend Lupe. These friends became family over the years - they are some of the most special people. Alice's favorite place was with her family - it was important for her to take care of and do for all of her family. She was always in tune with what was happening with her loved ones and wanted to help in whatever way possible with any challenge they may have been facing. To say she will be greatly missed is an understatement, but her legacy and the love she leaves behind brings great comfort, and we are forever changed for having known her. Mom/Grandma/Alice - she will always be an example of the best kind of person you could know, and she'll be in our hearts forever. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Cancer Foundation or the Gig Harbor United Methodist Church.
