John Wheeler

Wharton, NJ

: John “Johnny” Wheeler of Wharton, NJ passed away on January 2, 2024 at the age of 93 years young. John, or Dad, Pop and Poppy, as he was more informally and lovingly known as, was taken into the arms of our Lord as he laid peacefully in his home, surrounded by those who loved him most. John was born November 3, 1930 as the youngest of three boys, brothers Michael & Andrew (both predeceased), to loving parents Mickey and Elizabeth in apartment located at 10th Avenue and West 55th Street in Manhattan. He followed in his father’s footsteps and worked as a New York City Longshoreman, servicing the docks and being around some of the biggest, most prestigious and well known ships of his era. John was a tirelessly hard worker, always making sure he provided for the family he loved so dearly. He was predeceased by most people in his family due to his long, rich life. We know that he’s happy and at peace now, especially after reuniting with his wife and love of his life for 50+ years, Catherine “Kay” Wheeler, née Entwistle, who he lost over 26 years ago. His aforementioned brothers, Mickey and Andy, their wives, his parents, his best friend and fellow longshoreman Timmy Donohue and his family as well as the rest of the Wheeler clan waiting for him with open arms. John is survived by his four children, Michael Wheeler, Donna Guerrero (both in Wharton), Lizzie Wheeler (Mt. Pocono, Pa.) & Gina McCarthy of Sparta, NJ, as well as his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren: Melissa Vanderpolder and her husband Andy and their two daughters Alyssa & Samantha; Michelle Mata her husband Carlos and son Joshua; Robert Herrera and his wife Jessica and their son Gianluca; Kara Natale née Mack, her husband Nicholas along with their daughter Kinley and son Nathan, Nicholas Guerrero, and Keeghan McCarthy. John was truly a gentleman in every facet of life. As previously stated, his work ethic was unmatched, his love for family and tradition was his passion and his children and grandchildren were his purpose in life. He didn’t have many vices, except for the occasional Entenmann’s cake here or some cookies there. When his union work was slow, he’d pick up side jobs with his comrade Timmy, all for one reason — to provide the best he could for not only his family but his family’s families. He was generous to a fault, always wanting to help out people, many of whom he didn’t know at all. He made it a point to donate to the Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital on a regular basis. At one point, he gave his older car to a shopping center worker who he knew needed a way to get to and from work. That’s the type of person John Wheeler was. And Heaven gained an angel on January 2, 2024. Dad, Pop, Poppy, wherever you are now, we all hope you’re at peace and around the loved ones and all the faithfully departed who went before you. We will miss you everyday but know your loving legacy will live on for generations. You were truly one of a kind. We love you Pop! will be held on Saturday, January 27, 2024 at 10:30am at Saint Mary’s Roman Catholic Church located at 371 S Main Street, Wharton NJ 07885. , the family asks anyone who would like to donate, to please make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in memory of John, who was a longtime donor.
