"Mrs. Joan Anne Stewart, age 92, died on Tuesday, October 17, 2023 in North Muskegon, Michigan. She was born in Muskegon on May 2, 1931 to Albin G. and Edith C. (Petersen) Erickson. Joan graduated from Muskegon High School, class of 1949. She attended Muskegon Junior College, graduated from Muskegon Community College, and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1991. Joan worked as a case worker for the Department of Social Services prior to retirement in 1996. She was a strong advocate of supporting community, through service and philanthropy. Throughout her life she generously and annually contributed to dozens of worthy causes and charitable organizations. She maintained an active interest and involvement in government and politics. Joan served on the Muskegon City Commission from 1982-1985. She created the Edward J. and Joan Stewart Scholarship through the Muskegon County Community Foundation, which affords annual scholarships to outstanding Big Red graduates. On April 29, 1950, Joan married Edward J. Stewart. Together Ed and Joan had three children, who survive her: Marsha Lynn, Mark Elwin (Muriel Toppen), and Geoffrey "Jeff" Brian (Anne); eight grandchildren: Brandon (Megan), Nicholas, Jared, Zachary, Sam (Kate Huizenga), Edward, Joanne and Brian (Marcia); thirteen great-grandchildren: Alec, Ashley, Jack, Avery, Nolan, Emma, Mark, Katelyn, Micah, Liam, Wesley, Noah and Edward "EJ"; many beloved nieces and nephews, and her beloved kitty, Bittie. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; grandson, Jake; and siblings, Jeanne Gray, Kenneth Erickson, and Donald Erickson. Joan was a very special human being. She was beautiful, intelligent, articulate, strong, courageous, tenacious and 100% committed to and in love with her family. Joan did it "her way" and did it well. This was her - always. The fact that she was who she was, accomplished what she did, in the most difficult of circumstances is a testament to the remarkable and special person she was. "Mrs. Betty Jo Sikkenga, age 90, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023 in North Muskegon. She was born on September 7, 1932 in LaGrange, Georgia to Christopher and Lois (Thompson) Smith. On December 7, 1950, Betty married Louis G. Sikkenga and they enjoyed 48 years together prior to his passing in 1999. She worked as a waitress her entire career, retiring from Holly's at the Holiday Inn where she had worked from the day it opened. Betty enjoyed reading, acrostics, spending time with her family, and traveling with her husband. She is survived by her two daughters, Karen Gordon and Kathy (James) Behling; four grandchildren Staci (Jason) Jackson, Matthew Behling, Amanda (Brad) Austin, and Ryan Behling; nine great-grandchildren, Caitlyn Babb, Thomas Short, Paul Jackson, Carrie Jackson, Emma Kate Jackson, Isabella Behling, D`akota Behling, Ashley Austin, and Sydney Austin; brother, Charles Smith; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Louis; parents; son-in-law, Tim Gordon; granddaughter, Christy Gordon; and siblings, Christopher E. Smith, James D. Alice Jean Roach, age 83 of Twin Lake, passed away on Monday evening, August 8, 2022 at Robbinswood Assisted Living in North Muskegon. She was born on November 20, 1938 in Cedar Creek Township, Michigan to Nelson & Marie (Syers) Bean. Alice had been employed by Guardsman in Fremont for 10 years until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the Holton American Legion Auxiliary, the Fremont VFW Auxiliary, and the White Cloud Eagles Auxiliary. Alice lived a full life and enjoyed family & friends, camping, fishing, and her birds. She was also very competitive and loved to play cards, cornhole, and horseshoes. On June 2, 1961 she married Paul Roach and he preceded her in death on May 16, 2018. She was also preceded in death by her granddaughter, Heather Roach; grandson, Josiah Sutton; parents; sister, Joan Brassard; brother Elwood Bean, and infant twin brothers. Alice is survived by 3 children: Debbie (Gary) Trygstad of Holton, Dennis (Shiloh) Roach of Holton, Duane (Michelle) Roach of Holton; 11 grandchildren & 14 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Vivian Roach; 1 brother, Robert (Ruby) Bean; 1 sister, Darlene (John) Dykema; and by many loved nieces & nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Holton Evangelical Lutheran Church with Rev. Erich Hoeft officiating.
