Thomas Hargett Obituary

"David was born in Charlotte, NC to Thomas Paige and Ida Iola Hargett. He was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy and granddaughter, Anastasia Paige. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Linda and his children: Jodi Merck, David Hargett, Nancy Oddo and her husband Jim, Fred Hargett, and Dirk Hargett. He has 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, Nieces and nephews, Kevin and Teresa Dawkins, Terri and Earl Davis and Earl and Gail Dawkins. David graduated from East Mecklenburg High School and Kings Business College. He was a proud United States Air Force Veteran and a volunteer fireman with the Oakhurst Fire Department. He coached the Charlotte Junior Ice Hockey League at the old Charlotte Coliseum in the late 1950's where he caught Linda's eye. He worked for Florida Steel for 30 years - it was during this time that he tried his hand at sculpting large and small steel structures. He had a booth at Festival in the Park for many years -some of his sculptures can still be found around the downtown Charlotte area. He loved a cold beer or a good glass of wine while listening to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson or New Orleans Big Band with that rinky tink piano - it could never be loud enough! He was a military memorabilia collector for over 60 years and was widely recognized for his knowledge on the subject. He loved to travel and he and Linda visited many places in Europe and the United States. He cried when they reached the shores of Normandy. David was a gentle and quiet man with a wicked sense of humor. He was fiercely protective of his family and would always tell you that he loved you when you left. Family was most important to him and he will be missed by everyone who knew and loved him. The family wishes to thank Hospice and especially, Jessica his caregiver, for the love and respect shown to David and his family. In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Hospice. Private services will be held. "
