It is with tremendous sadness that on May 8th, 2023, a beloved man passed away peacefully in his sleep after being surrounded by his family and friends. Whether you knew him as Tommy, Pop-I, or Pops, it didn't matter, all share the same sentiment and are deeply saddened by his passing. He was born on January 5th, 1947 at his Grandmother's house in Lovettsville, VA. Shortly thereafter, he, his brother, Mother, and Father moved into a small house that his father built outside of Lovettsville on Mountain Road; that is still owned by his mother. Tommy attended Lovettsville school until 7th grade before moving to Loudoun County High School for 8th and 9th grade. For the remainder of his high school career, he attended the newly built Loudoun Valley High School where he graduated in 1965. In September 1965 he began working for Loudoun County Public Schools (LCPS). On May 1st, 1966 he joined the Army where he served 2 years during the Vietnam War as part of the 196th Infantry Brigade. He was honorably discharged May 1st, 1968 at the rank of SP4(T). His military decorations included the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and Expert Rifle. He then served in the Army Reserves until May 11th, 1972. Immediately following his return from the service in 1968, he was reemployed by LCPS where he served the students and staff for another 55 years. In 1983, Tommy met his future wife Trudy and her two sons, Brian and Noel. They wed in 1985 and in 1986 their son, Gregory Thomas Fields, was born. Soon after Greg's birth the family moved to a house that Tommy built with his father, family, and friends. Over the years Tommy enjoyed building model cars, going to Winchester for the races, and taking care of the home he took so much pride in. He loved working in his yard and making sure the property stayed in pristine condition. However, nothing gave him more joy than when he would hear the name Pop-i called out. This meant that one of his beloved 13 grandchildren was around. Pop-i would always stop what he was doing and start playing with the grandchildren without a care in the world, teaching them small lessons as they played. Coworkers have described Tommy as funny, respectful, genuine, humble, the nicest man you will ever meet, and always willing to help anyone. No matter what time of day, he always had a minute or two to make conversation, make a witty remark, and move on leisurely and methodically, leaving you with a smile. He would always take on any assignment given to him without a second thought or qualm about it. On May 8th, not only did Loudoun County lose a lifelong resident and a great man. Trudy lost a great husband. Brian, Noel, and Greg lost a great Dad. His grandchildren lost a great Pop-i. LCPS lost a great employee. Coworkers lost a great coworker. Everyone lost a great deal. Tommy officially retired from LCPS on May 3rd, 2023. If you met him, you remembered him. He will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and coworkers. Rest now, Pops. You did great!Tommy is survived by his wife Trudy Fields. His Mother Virginia Fields. His children Brian Green, Noel & Jessica Green, and Greg & Aimee Fields. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren: Grayson Fields, Esme Fields, Breanna Green, Adam Green, Jacob Green, Ryan Green, Riley Green, Dylan Green, Shawna Acosta, JJ Acosta, Isaiah Acosta, Shiane Miller, Aiden Bohince, numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
