Fred Thomas Craig "Tom", born October 16, 1931, passed away on May 6, 2023. He was preceded in death by his parents Thomas Herbert and Era Coleman Craig of Martinsville, Virginia and his first wife Ruth Lower Craig. Tom graduated from Martinsville High School and Virginia Tech University. He taught 5th and 6th grade before entering the Air Force, serving at Langley AFB during the Korean War. Afterwards, he entered the insurance business in Hartford, Connecticut and was transferred to Birmingham. He later joined Hamilton and Shackelford, which became Hilb, Rogal and Hamilton, where he served as Executive Vice-President. He was also president of the Birmingham Association of Insurance Agents. Tom was a lifelong sports fan. He coached Little League baseball, served as President of the Mountain Brook Athletics, was a member of Tide Pride, and was a devoted Atlanta Braves fan. He also loved bridge and was a Silver Life Master member of the Birmingham Duplicate Bridge Club. He was a member of Shades Mountain Baptist Church and especially enjoyed his Sunday School class. He had previously served on the administrative board at Canterbury United Methodist Church. He and his wife Dottie were currently residents at Brookdale University Park Senior Living Community, where he enjoyed visiting with friends over meals and playing cards. He is survived by his wife Dorothy Owings Craig and his children Thomas Coleman Craig (Elizabeth) of Hendersonville, NC, Jennings Craig Boone (Douglas) of Bunia, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cynthia Baker Lewis (Joe) of Nashville, TN, and Elizabeth Baker Goodson (Lee) of Carrollton, AL. Visitation will be held at Ridout's Valley Chapel located at 1800 Oxmoor Road, Homewood, AL 35209 on Saturday, May 13, 2023 beginning at 12 PM, with the funeral service following at 1 PM. Burial will be immediately afterwards at Elmwood Cemetery, 600 Martin Luther King, Jr Drive, Birmingham. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to Wycliffe Bible Translators, Acct #212015.
