Janet Walth Wilson departed this life on Sunday, February 18, 2024 at home surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Earl M. Walth and Margaret “Peggy” Rasmussen. Born in Eureka, SD on December 31, 1948, she was raised in Colorado Springs, CO. After graduating from St. Mary’s High School, she attended the University of Colorado where she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. She was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Stephen Walth.Janet met and married the love of her life, Ken, June 22, 1974 while he was stationed in Colorado Springs with the United States Air Force. They moved to McGuire AFB, NJ and then to Altus AFB, OK before settling in Roanoke Rapids, NC following his retirement. She was a nurse at the hospitals in Emporia, VA and Scotland Neck, NC before becoming a nursing instructor at Halifax Community College, retiring in 2015. After she retired, she volunteered at Halifax Memorial Hospital and enjoyed talking with former students. Caring for those in need was her passion, whether patients in the hospital, a family member, or friend.Left to cherish her memory are her husband of over 49 years, C. K. “Ken” Wilson of the home, son David Wilson (Rebecca) of Murfreesboro, NC, daughter Christene W. Hoyt (Philip) of Granville, NY; mother-in-law, Martha G. Wilson of Roanoke Rapids, NC; granddaughters, Rileigh Wilson, Kayla Wilson, Ashley Hoyt, and Taylor Hoyt; step granddaughters Rayne Davis, Jaide Davis, and Jacey Carlisle; niece, Heather N. Royster (Josh), nephews Gregory Walth, Mark Walth, and Benjamin Walth; grandniece, Addie Royster and grandnephew, Jack Royster. She is also survived by her brother, Michael Walth (Margaret) of Louisville, CO., sister, Mary “Molly” W . Bernard (Stephen) of Denver, CO., and sister-in-law, Brenda Walth of Colorado Springs, CO. In addition, she is survived by sister-in-law, Jane Lawler (Tom) of Raleigh, NC, and brother-in-law, John Wilson (Launa) of Cle Elum, WA.The family would like to extend a special thank you to Angel, Doris, Kimiesha, Wanda, and the staff at Scotland House for their care of Janet. Also, a special thank you to Liberty Hospice staff members, Lavelle, Shelley, Cathy, and Ebony for their care of Janet and the family. The family extends a heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Amanda McGee, Neurologist, at Boice Willis Clinic in Rocky Mount, NC for her care and support.Visitation will be held at Askew Funeral and Cremation Services on Wednesday, February 21, 2024 from 6:30 – 8:00 PM.A funeral service will be held on February 22, 2024 at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services officiated by Rev. Randy Martin.Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids.

Marian Leake White, 88 of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, February 16, 2024.She was born in Halifax County on July 15, 1935 to the late James William Leake, Sr. and Molly Elizabeth Cobb Leake and was preceded in death by brothers, Clifton Leake and Claude Leake and her granddaughter, Katie White.Marian played piano for many years at First Pentecostal Holiness Church of Roanoke Rapids where she was a member for many years. She worked as a registered nurse caring for many people. Marian was a dedicated servant using her talents to minister to local nursing homes for many years. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother and loved all of her family very much.Marian is survived by her daughter, Amy Ricks and her husband, Wayne of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina; her son, Robert J. White and his wife, Nancy of Easly, South Carolina; her brother, James Leake, Jr.; her three grandchildren, Jason White Easly, South Carolina, Jay Thomas Ricks and his wife, Tonya, and Steven B. Ricks and his wife, Rachel; her great-grandchildren, Topanga Smith and her husband, Lorenz, Bryson Ryder, Alyssa White, Hunter White, Michael Ricks, and Gavin Ricks; her extended great-grandchildren, D.J. Hall and Brenden Hall; her many nieces and nephews and her special friends Amelia Edwards and Virginia Wright.Funeral services will be held on Monday, February 19, 2024 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Matthew Smith officiating.The family will receive friends and family at the church on Monday from 10:00 AM until service time.

James Robert Johnston Jr. passed away on Tuesday February 6,2024 after a long illness. He was born in Philadelphia on October 29,1950. He was predeceased by his parents James Robert Johnston Sr. and June (Lamb) Johnston and his father-in-law John (Jack) Rigney. Jim graduated from Cheltenham High School in 1969. Jim worked as a sheet metal worker and fabricator shortly after graduation. Jim was a 52-year member of Local 420 Steamfitters and Pipefitters and retired in 2008.Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending time with his wife bowhunting and competing in archery tournaments including the Pennsylvania indoor and outdoor Keystone Games. He spent many hours with friends perfecting his archery skills at Clayton’s Hunting and Fishing in Horsham Pa. He also was a competitive marksman.After retiring he relocated to Littleton and in 2018, he received his General Ham Radio license. That began 6 years of connections with people all over the world. As a member of the YL system he forged everlasting friendships.Jim also loved his fur babies and his birdies.He is survived by his wife of forty-eight ½ years Maryann (Rigney) Johnston, his children James R. Johnston III (estranged), Maryann (Johnston) Boden, five grandchildren, Jonah, Taylor, Connor, MacKenzie and Katie. He is also survived by his sister June (Johnston) Betson, brother-in-law John Rigney(Rhonda), sister-in-law Denise Rigney and mother-in-law Anne Rigney and 1 niece and 4 nephews.

James Weathers Pearson, Sr., 81, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away on Thursday, February 8, 2024. He was a native of Halifax County and was the son of the late Grady and Willie Pearson.  James was a “Great Dad and Papa”. He retired from West Point Stevens and then worked for Pearson’s Nursery for 10 years. He loved Lake Gaston, dressing up as the Easter Bunny and Halloween for the kids. He and Sarah Baltz started the Sherwood Forest pig picking and he was a legend at the camp ground. He was an avid Duke fan; he simply loved people and would talk to anyone. He is survived by his wife, Brenda Morgan Pearson, his son, James “Jim” Weathers Pearson, Jr. and Jennifer Suggs of Roanoke Rapids; his granddaughter, Jessica Ann Carter and her husband, John of Roanoke Rapids; great granddaughter, Everly Carter; nephew, Jess Morgan and Sue Haynes; his mother-in-law, Virginia Hall of Roanoke Rapids and his sister-in-law, Sue Morgan of Henrico. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at Cedarwood Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Joseph Battle officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at the cemetery.
