He is survived by his five grandchildren Bella Giammalvo, Luciano Giammalvo, Ghita Giammalvo, Taylor Nowak and Steven Nowak. He is, also, survived by several cousins. Few individuals dedicated themselves to public service for the majority of their career. We in Connecticut are fortunate to have a person who exemplifies these finest qualities of such a special person. After graduating from Hopkins School, Yale College and Harvard Law School, Tom began his life in public service as a lawyer for New Haven Legal Assistance Association, where over a span of nearly twenty years he represented thousands of indigent defendants in criminal matters in courthouses throughout the state. His compassion, quality and caliber of his representation, as well as the nature of his unselfish dedication to the less fortunate moved the New Haven Register upon his elevation to the Superior Court in 1986 to bestow upon him the deserving title of "Saint Thomas of the Bench". As a Presiding and a Trial Judge in Civil and Criminal matters, Tom authored decisions which reflect industry, intellectual rigor and insightfulness. He treated the public in a manner which promoted tremendous respect for the judicial system. Tom contributed substantially to the advancement and understanding of our laws. In spite of the rigorous demands of judicial responsibilities, Tom volunteered regularly at food banks in the New Haven area along with the Community Dining Room in Branford benefitting innumerable indigent people. Tom, also, served in the Connecticut Army Reserves from October 1964 thru August 1970 receiving an Honorable Discharge. During his career Tom was the recipient of the 1998 Henry J. Naruk Judiciary Award along with numerous other outstanding awards. Thank you to the Middlesex Hospice Nursing staff, along with other staff members and volunteers, in helping Tom to be able to be at home during this time in his life. Special thank you to Comfort Keepers, Brittany and Kris, for helping with Tom's care. The hours of visitation will be held on Friday, September 15, 2023 from 4pm until 7pm at the Guilford Funeral Home, 115 Church Street, Guilford, CT.
