A life-long resident, David George Whitman, 74, of Manistique, passed away at home on December 5, 2023. David was born March 24,1949 to his parents, Walter and Muriel Whitman. He attended Manistique Area Schools, graduating with the MHS class of 1967. Two years later, he married the former Sandra Jones at St. Francis de Sales on April 19, 1969, celebrating 54 wonderful years of marriage. Together they had two children. After high school, David worked with Great Lakes Freighters, in the trucking industry, and spent seven years farming. However, he hit his stride in 1978 when he began his own successful company, Whitman Excavating. David loved working. He was a creative guy who loved what he did. He enjoyed talking shop, always! He was a master at turning conversations into work related topics. David loved the outdoors and riding through the woods. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed hunting and target shooting. He was a member of the U. P. Whitetails Association of Schoolcraft County, Ducks Unlimited, the NRA, and Delta County Gun Owners Association. He was a proud member of the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians and held a Captain's License for the Sault Tribe. He loved his family. His little buddy Jackson, his "peapod" was the joy of his life. David is survived by his mother, Muriel of Manistique, MI; his son Daniel (LeeAnne) Whitman of Manistique, MI; his daughter Kathy (Chris) Ziminski of Neenah, WI; his brothers, Ronnie Whitman of Manistique, MI; Jeff Whitman of Wausau, WI, and Wayne Whitman of Holt, MI and their families. David is also survived by his three grandchildren, Zachary Whitman, Dakota (Haley) Whitman, and Nicholas Ziminski. Great grandson, Jackson Christopher "Peapod" Whitman and special goddaughter, Katie LaMuth. David was preceded in death by his father Walter Whitman. Joan Purcell of Germfask, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2023 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique, Michigan. Joan was 88 years old. She was born on August 4, 1935 to Howard and Evelyn (Ovist) McEachern. She grew up in an energetic household of six sisters and attended schools in Manistique. In 1953, Joan married Robert Bowler and together they had five children, four boys and one daughter. Joan later remarried to Daniel Purcell of Germfask, MI in 2001. With five children to raise, Joan was a homemaker and a member of the Germfask Methodist Church. She spent the greater part of her life in Germfask and became quite involved with her community. Joan loved to volunteer and did so at the Ladies Auxiliary and Seney Wildlife Refuge Visitor's Center. She was a 4-H leader for horsemanship, and a member of the Cattle Association. Joan enjoyed hunting, nature and wildlife watching, painting, sight-seeing, and romance novels. She enjoyed having visitors and special gatherings at her home. She loved to show off her flower garden as she was most proud. Joan is survived by her children, Mike (Diann) Bowler of Germfask, MI; Dallas (Lynda) Bowler of Clyman, WI; Mark (Sonya) Bowler of Silverwood, MI; Darrell (Marcia) Bowler of Spokane, WA, and Kim Haney (Steve Hovey) of Pheonix, AZ. Joan is survived by her 15 grandchildren, Crystal, Robert, Krystal, Katerine, Lashanna, Alesi, Justin, Harms, Adam, Daniel, Diana, Ryan, Heather, Natasha, and Shannon along with 12 great-grandchildren. Joan's surviving sisters include Gerri Jimenez and Joyce Sexton. Not to be forgotten among those who are survivors is Joan's beloved dog, Lucky. Preceding Joan in death is her husband, Daniel Purcell, her parents Howard and Evelyn McEachern, grandson Andree Orr, sisters, Jackie, Bonita, and Anita. On November 14, 2023, Gary Lee Raffensberger passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 76 in Manistique, Michigan. Gary was born April 16, 1947 in Jackson, MI to Carl and Mildred Raffensberger. He grew up with two sisters and one brother. Gary attended Jackson Public schools. Gary had three children from his marriage to Kathryn Raffensberger, two sons and one daughter. In 1979 he and his family moved to Schoolcraft County where he worked at Manistique Tool and Die. The highlights of his working career include his time spent with McDonnell Douglas Aerospace Manufacturing and his own entrepreneurial endeavors as G L Raffensberger and Associates. Gary loved to create and build things with his hands, including his log cabin and sawmill. He enjoyed the outdoors and cutting wood as well as working in his machine shop, engineering and could manufacture anything one may need. Gary could be described as strong-willed and determined, once he had a goal in his mind there was no stopping him. He was a very bright man and was always learning. His passion for knowledge never dulled and he continued to take courses until his passing. Gary is survived by his children, Gary (Becky) Raffensberger II of Jackson, MI; Christopher Raffensberger of Manitou Beach, and Rebecca (Jacob) Mastie of Concord, MI. Gary is also survived by his six grandchildren, Dillin, Colton, Carter, Joseph, Adelia, and Luke. Surrounded by his loving and devoted family, on November 12, 2023, John Edward Liebnau, 86, gracefully returned to the light to join his Heavenly Father. The son of Frederick and Mildred Liebnau, John was born in Toledo, Ohio, attended DeVilbiss High School, served in the Naval Reserves, and made an impact as a loyal employee who retired from Conagra Foods. John was a determined soul, with firm resolve, who never lost heart. As a three-time cancer survivor, he was a beacon of hope to his family and friends, and lived an inspirational life dedicated to the divine qualities of perseverance, compassion, and courage. For over 38 years, he had the honor of sharing his journey with the love of his life, wife, and best friend, Karen Lovelady-Liebnau. They spent their time going to music festivals, symphonies, NASCAR races, mountain adventures in national parks, and attending their grandchildren's sporting and commemorative events. John dedicated his time to raising and providing loving guidance and caring support to his six children, Jill Liebnau, Jodi Wint (Wes), John Liebnau, Jordan Lucero (Gwen), Jennifer Beyer, Jessica Saez (Doug), and nine grandchildren, Cameron Walter, Carly Walter, Donald Lucero, Dacoda Lucero, Dylan Lucero, Allie Saez, Kayley Saez, Myah Saez, S. Caleb McFall, and two great-grandchildren, Wyatt Lucero, Emma Lucero. He was deeply inspired and proud of all they had accomplished and optimistic for their future endeavors. His other loves included black licorice, Pink Floyd, Dale Earnhart, German Chocolate Cake, Ohio State Buckeyes, being on the lake with his family watching the boats go by and playing a rousing game of croquet on a perfectly manicured lawn. He was proceeded in death by his parents, brother Alton Liebnau, and sister, Ruth Brandt. To all who are inspired to read John's obituary, remember, "when you go through deep water, I will be with you" Isaiah 43:2. It is the quote that most embodies John's belief in his Savior and his firm resolve. To his family and friends, know that John was deeply grateful for your presence in his life, and continues to watch over you, pray for you, and is hopeful you make the best of your earthly journey. Shingleton Eleanor M. Bell, age 105, of Shingleton, died Friday, November 10, 2023 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique. She was born on September 23, 1918 in Germfask, Michigan to the late James and Margaret (Batway) Berry. Eleanor graduated from Germfask High School in 1936. She met James Bell while he was working at a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, and they were married on October 18, 1938. Eleanor worked for the United States Postal Service for many year and retired in the 1980's. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Hospital Auxiliary, and St. John's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed working in her flower garden, rides in the woods, picking berries, and quilting. Eleanor is survived by her children - Ronald Bell of Shingleton and Karen (Edward) Dziak of Mosinee, WI; grandchildren - Gary (Tonia) Dziak, Chritine (Tim) Goldsmith, and Cassie (Ben) Steinhoff; great-grandchildren - Kian, Matthew, Leslie, Mason, Grayson, Caitlin, Cassidy, Callie, Lorelei, Courtney, Monica, and Natalie; numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents James and Margaret; husband - Jim; son - Donald Bell; daughter-in-law - Iris Bell; granddaughter - Melissa Syers; and sisters - Dorothy Davis, Janette Mannila, and Beatrice Miller. On November 8, 2023, Donald St. John Sr. , 90, died peacefully at home with his family by his side. He was born on December 20, 1932 in Curtis, Michigan to Frederick and Lillian (Paradise) St. John. He graduated from Manistique High school with the class of 1952. Don served in the US Army and trained with the Military police in Munich, Germany. He loved to play basketball and was a great player. He even played for the U. S. Army team winning a high scoring trophy in a tournament! Don worked at Hancock Lumber for a few years after returning from the army before accepting a job at Port Inland as a heavy equipment operator. He retired from the Inland after thirty-five years. Afterwards, he went back to work at the US Forest Service for two seasons and Napa for an additional eleven years! On June 8, 1957 he married the former Dawn Johnson, they were married for 63 years. Together they had four sons and one daughter. Don loved basketball. When he returned from the army he continued to play in the Manistique City Basketball league for many years. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and cutting wood. He enjoyed carpentry and helped his family build their homes and remodel. Playing pool and going to the casino were fun activities he liked. Deer hunting with his family was a real passion for Don. It was a family event and he taught all his children how to hunt. In 1980 he was proud to have bagged a Boone and Crocket 15 pt. buck weighing 240 lbs. with his muzzleloader. Clifford Stanley Gould, 75, of Manistique died peacefully in his home on November 7, 2023. He was born on September 19, 1948 in Manistique to Leo and Alvera (Koutu) Gould and grew up in a home of twelve siblings. He received his education in Manistique. His life's work was spent at the White Pine Mines as a Mining Laborer. Clifford loved the outdoors. Hunting and fishing were two of his favorite things to do. He enjoyed watching a good TV show, especially old western movies, playing cards, scratch-off cards and spending time with family and friends. Baseball was his favorite sport and played it often in his youth. He was a member of the Eagles Club. Clifford was kindhearted and would help anyone. Clifford is survived by his daughters Dina Gould of Manistique, MI; Heidi (Scott) Strickland of Westland, MI; and Wendy Hawthorne of Wartburg, TN. Brothers, David (Eileen) Gould; Terry (Debbie) Gould, and James (Arlene) Gould all of Manistique MI; sisters, Beverly (Jim) Marks; Brenda (Tom) Smith; Cindy (Lon) Brinkman; and Roberta (Ernie) Pelon all of Manistique, MI. On November 6, 2023, Rhonda Anthony, 60 of Manistique, Michigan died peacefully in her home. She was born March 15, 1963 to Barbara Joan and Carl Beckman Jr. On July 30, 1983, Rhonda married the love of her life, Thomas Anthony at the First Baptist Church in Manistique. Together they had two beautiful daughters, Kayla and Kylie. Rhonda attended Manistique Area Schools graduating with the class of 1981. Rhonda's first job after graduation was at The Peoples Store as a sales clerk working for John Pat Miller. She then worked as a Teacher's Aide at Emerald Elementary and spent her summers working at Save-A-Lot. A member of Manistique's First Baptist Church, Rhonda spent many years serving her church family. While she was healthy, she loved going for drives through the woods and enjoyed catching glimpses of wildlife. Decorating for the seasons and baking holiday treats were among her favorite things. She loved the outdoors, taking walks, and enjoying the fresh air. Her beloved grandchildren brought her tremendous joy. Later, she enjoyed playing crazy eights, old maid and more with her grandchildren. Above all else, Rhonda loved her family unconditionally and gave her all to them. She was caring and selfless. She was the best mom and wife. Rhonda is survived by her husband, Thomas "Tom" Anthony; daughters, Kayla (Francis) Bremmer of Westland, MI and Kylie (Jake) Milavec of Manistique, MI. Rhonda is also survived by her five grandchildren, Claire, Crosby, Henry, Emma, and Michael and her father, Carl Beckman Jr. Rhonda is preceded in death by her mother Barbara Joan Beckman and her two brothers, Ken and Blaine Beckman. On November 5, 2023, Frank Leitgeb, 82 of Manistique died peacefully in his sleep. He was born on February 8, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan to Frank and Mary (Tatsak) Leitgeb. Frank married the former Shirley Kerr on January 22, 1994. Frank had one daughter, Nicole. Frank graduated from Taylor High School Class of 1959 in Taylor, Michigan. Frank was self-employed for most of his life, owning a Hobart Sales & Services franchise. He spent the greater part of his life living in Flint, Michigan. After his retirement, Frank and Shirley relocated to Manistique in 2003. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Manistique, MI. Frank played semi-pro football in his younger years. He enjoyed power lifting, golf, and bowling. He was also an avid photographer. Frank is survived by his wife Shirley of Manistique and his daughter Nicole (Shane) Zacharis of Grand Blanc, Michigan; his siblings, Ronald (Linda) Leitgeb, Beverly Eros, and Dennis (Barbara) Leitgeb; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold (Phyllis) Kerr of Tennessee, Virginia (Winston) Mortiere of Flint, MI, and Nancy (Jeff) Stevens of Florida. Grace Merle Cook, age 85, passed away on October 30, 2023, at her home in Manistique. She was born on July 30, 1938 to Grace (Nelson) and Ransom Powell. Following the death of her mother as an infant, Esther (Arrowood) married Ransom Powell and raised Grace as her daughter, growing up on the Kendall Road with five brothers and one sister. Grace attended school in Manistique and graduated with the class of 1957. She married Wallace Cook on March 21, 1959 and they raised three sons, Rick, Ron, and Rob. Throughout her married life, she was employed at the JCPenny, Ramada Inn, First National Bank and Save-A-Lot. She tried retirement a couple of times, but Grace was not one to sit still. She loved to work, garden, bake, travel and visit casinos, can pickles and beets, and spend time with family and friends. Her love of baking was always shared with her kids and grandkids as they were forever supplied with Grandma Grace's homemade breads, pies, jams, pickles, and cookies. She was the queen of "scrubbies" for Manistique. You could find them in businesses in town, the Senior Center and at most craft fairs. Grace is survived by her sons Rick, Ron (Elaine), Rob (Angel) all of Manistique. Also, nine grandchildren, Diana Cook, Rachel (Ian) Hill, Michelle (Nick) Monroe, Alison Cook (Jacob Andruk), Leah Cook (Christian Vitale), Jeremy (Amy) Cook, Holly Cook (Scott Streichert), and Katie Birdsley. She leaves behind a treasure of sixteen great grandchildren and her brothers Jim (Carol) Powell and Mike (Barb) Powell. She was preceded in death by her husband Wally in 2012, parents Grace Powell, Esther and Ransom Powell, in-laws Ed and Dorothy Cook. Gone before Grace were her brothers Ted, Dale, and Bill Powell, and sister Barbara Heinz. Memorial Services for Grace will take place on Friday, November 17, 2023 at the Presbyterian Church of the Redeemer in Manistique. Visitation will begin at 11:00 a. m. , with memorial service at 12:00 p. m. with lunch to follow at the church. Rev. Eleanor Russey will be officiating.
