Brian Coates

Brian Paul Coates was the fifth-born child to Harry Edward Coates, Sr. and Cuba Jean Coates (Green) on July 17, 1956 in Seminole, Oklahoma. Brian had seven siblings and enjoyed telling stories about his rural and adventurous childhood. He grew up wrangling Shetland ponies and pulling pranks on his loving siblings. His nickname as a child was "Smiley Briney" because he was always happy. Brian graduated from Strother High School in 1974 and began pursuing his college education while also working for his father's roofing company, attending classes at Seminole Junior College, Oklahoma State University and Central State University. Brian founded Coates Roofing Company in 1985 after working on the Sante Fe Railroad as a switchman. He then met his wife, Rhonda, at Baptist Temple Church in Oklahoma City where they were married on New Year's Day in 1988. In 1990, they moved to land neighboring his childhood family homestead where they raised four children, Dalton, Amelia, Reagan, and Abigail, in a similar fashion to Brian's upbringing. Brian was a roofer, business owner, instrument-rated pilot, rancher, inventor, and--most importantly--a family man. He accumulated thousands of hours of flight time while fulfilling his responsibilities as President of Coates Roofing Company, including completing projects in each of the lower forty-eight states. Over the course of thirty-eight years, this business allowed Brian to support his family and provide many jobs to others in Seminole County and beyond. In his later years, Brian greatly enjoyed working with Rhonda as a business partner in the company. Brian raised his family on and near family land where he taught them how to ride horses, work cattle, and love every farm animal known to man. They raised pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, horses, cattle, and more. Brian prioritized his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who saved his life two very notable times, over everything else. Jesus saved his eternal soul as a child when Brian dedicated his life to the Lord, and He saved Brian's life in 1999 from cancer, allowing Brian to raise his four children. Brian was a loving father who was known for his humor, affection, and generosity. Brian highly valued education, a value he instilled in his children and family. He achieved a lifelong goal of completing his bachelor's degree in 2018, graduating from Oklahoma Baptist University at the age of sixty-one. He served as a deacon and children's Sunday School teacher at First Baptist Church of Seminole for well over two decades. He instilled the teachings of the Bible to everyone who walked into his room, many of whom he picked up and brought to church. In 2021, Brian was blessed with the birth of his first grandson, Hagan. Being a granddad was one of the great joys of his life, and he enjoyed a close relationship with Hagan, who called him "Briney. " Brian was a mosaic of wonderful qualities, hobbies, and career paths. The quality that shines forth the most is his love for others and for Jesus. Brian was preceded in death by his sister Priscilla Faith Coates, his father Harry Coates, Sr. , and mother, Cuba Coates. Brian is survived by his wife Rhonda Coates (Chastine), son Dalton Coates and his wife Kelsey Coates, daughter Amelia Marquis, husband Riley Marquis and grandson Hagan, son Reagan Coates and his wife Laura Coates, and daughter Abigail LaRose and her husband Kyle LaRose. He is also survived by his siblings Lynda Gay Jordan, Harry E. Coates, Jr. , Lisa Lee, Laura Good, Jennifer Thomas, and Bruce Coates. The funeral service for Brian will be at 10:30 A. M. , Saturday, December 9, 2023, at the First Baptist Church in Seminole, Oklahoma with Doug Melton officiating. Burial will follow at Little Cemetery. Byron Calhoun

"In Loving Memory of Byron Kurt Calhoun Byron Kurt Calhoun, born on July 23, 1957, to Willard and Lola Calhoun of Seminole, Oklahoma, entered his heavenly home on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, with his loving family by his side. A devoted husband, father, son, brother, and friend, Byron\u0027s life centered around family and faith. Graduating from Mason High School in 1976 and attending ORU, he embarked on a 13-year career in the oil and gas industry before joining the United States Postal Service in 1995. Over 22 years, he held various roles within the Post Office and formed long-lasting friendships. In retirement, Byron found joy in home renovations and pursued a career in real estate. Family activities, especially time with his grandchildren, brought him immense happiness. Despite his battle with brain cancer starting in May 2020, Byron remained resilient. His journey led him to MD Anderson in Houston, where he forged connections and later pursued his dream of attending Rhema Bible College upon returning to Broken Arrow. Byron\u0027s commitment to spreading God\u0027s word, his unwavering love for family, and his caring nature will be deeply missed. Whether watching Hallmark movies or celebrating all things Christmas with his best friend and love of his life, Laura, Byron\u0027s impact on the lives around him is everlasting. He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and strength that will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. Byron is preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Brinda and Regina, and daughter in law, Amber. He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Laura, son Kurt and wife Katie, son Edward and wife Liz, son Travis and wife Laura, daughter Candice and husband John, as well as his 10 grandchildren: Matthew, Ethan, Aiden, Owen, Paxton, Zyler, Sienna, Tatum, Parker, and Cooper. Byron is also survived by his siblings: Betty, Charles and wife Janette, Ava and husband Bob, Noel and husband Ryan, Ginger, Randy, as well as their families and many loving friends. Anthony Wayne "Tony" Watts, age 63, passed away Monday, November 27, 2023, at his home. Tony, the son of Kyle and Keitha (Williams) Watts, was born April 17, 1960, in Seminole. Tony spent many of his early years in Seminole County, before moving to the El Reno area. Tony graduated high school with the El Reno class of 1978. After graduation he attended El Reno Junior College. At 19, he moved to Dallas, where he started selling encyclopedias; a man he worked with offered him a job in house construction, sparking a 40-year career in building and design. Ultimately Tony was a senior CAD designer for Trimark Strategic. He was featured in D Magazine for his accomplishments in kitchen design. Of his many projects, Tony designed the W Hotel's Ghost Bar, in Dallas, all TGI Friday's kitchens worldwide, and MLB stadium kitchens and concessions in Reno, Atlanta and Arlington. But what may have been his favorite project was his home in Seminole that he designed for the love of his life, Tammy. He spent the last year of his life overseeing the construction of their home, he was very proud of it. Tony enjoyed golf, fishing, baseball, and spending time with his family and friends. He had a never-ending curiosity of how things worked and had a drive to learn as much about the world as he could. He felt at peace in nature, in the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, as well as Bassmaster weekend tournament fishing. Tony could frequently be found sitting on his front porch, drinking coffee, soaking in the world around him. Also, he and Tammy enjoyed their time together talking while sitting on the porch these last few months. He was preceded in death by his parents, Keitha and Kyle Watts, and a sister, Julie Watts. Tony is survived by his wife, Tammy Watts, of the home; sons and daughters-in-law, Andrew and Abby of McKinney, TX. , Christopher and Jillian, of Dallas, TX. , and Richard, of Kilgore, TX. ; two grandchildren, Kambria Rose, and Kaden Anthony; a brother and sister-in-law, David and Diane Schoonover, of Ft. Opal Imogene Crabtree, 90, Seminole resident (formerly of Howe, Oklahoma) passed from this life on Friday, November 17, 2023 in Seminole, Oklahoma. Opal was born on October 19, 1933 in Howe, Oklahoma to her parents, William Angus Thrift and Ada (Ary) Thrift. Opal spent the majority of her life in the Howe, Oklahoma area and after moving to the Seminole area she worked for 16 years at the Wrangler Plant in Seminole, Oklahoma. Opal loved reading and studying her bible and was a strong prayer warrior. Opal married James Crabtree on September 27, 1951 in Greenwood, Arkansas. McLoud resident, Tanya Staring, age 60, sadly left us on November 11th, 2023, after her 3-year-long battle with cancer. Tanya was born to William and Louise (Owens) Dority, December 5, 1963, in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. On April 5, 2012, she married Roger Staring, in Las Vegas. Tanya's favorite pastimes included sewing, gardening with her husband, swimming and watching her soaps, but nothing was as important to her as spending time with her family and friends. In death she was reunited with her two sons Eddie and BJ, along with her father Frank, her grandmother Mary and her aunt Minnie. She was so full of life and if you got to know her, you loved her, and if she loved you, you knew it. She leaves behind her husband Roger, daughter Pamela, seven grandchildren Michael, Kayla, Justin, William, Hattie, Cary, and Kermit. She also had 6 great grandchildren, Simon, Beverly, Eddie, Maverick, T'Marie, and Tobi. Also, her mother Louise, along with her siblings Kenny, Albert, Wayne, Randy, Sheila, Janice, and Carl. She also had several children that she adopted over the years and they are Chris, Lindsay, Chelsey, Melissa, Michael, and Andy. She was the rock of her family and always knew what to say or how to fix the problem. She was the best mother, wife and sister someone could ever ask for.
