Betty Jane (Adkins) DeLong 52 of Herndon Heights formally of Keyrock passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends at Raleigh General Hospital on Thursday November 23, 2023 following a sudden illness. Born on April 8,1971 in Welch she is the daughter to Bobby Joe Adkins and Frances Margaret Tolliver Sims. Betty was a true gem whose laugh and beautiful smile would light up any room she walked into. She loved to play games at Christmas, and we will continue her traditions through the years in memory of her, she had a heart of gold and would give you her last penny if she knew it was helping loved ones, especially her family. Betty was a 1991 Pineville High School graduate, who attended Valley College with a bachelor's degree in Business Administrative. She worked at the Wyoming Nursing & Rehabilitation as the activity director who loved planning events for the residents, she loved walking into the rooms and just sitting with them, talking about their day. Those left to cherish her life is her fianceJeremy Mullins of Herndon Heights, Her son Adam DeLong and her only special grandson Kayson Thomas DeLong both of Pineville. Her brother Bobby Sims of Texas, and her two sisters Debra and Robert Kendall of Keyrock, Janet Adkins and her fiance Phillip Just Sr of Pineville and a special co-sister Aretta Porter. Many nieces and nephews Chelsea Sims, Jessica Sims, Julee Kendall all of Texas, Billy Porter of Oak Hill, Jake Kendall of Keyrock, Michael Sinecoff and Austin Sinecoff of Pineville. She loved her great nieces and nephews Shaylann Kendall, Juddson Kendall, AxL Rhodes, Keeley Porter, Laramie Porter all of Keyrock and Kaden and Kaitlyn Eller of Texas. On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, Sue Laverne Clay Hurd, 76, of Saulsville, WV was called to her heavenly home. Born on July 7, 1947, in Beckley, WV, she is preceded in death by her parents, Verne Edward Clay and Geneva Stewart Clay, both of Saulsville, West Virginia. She leaves behind her husband, Gary Lee Hurd, of Saulsville, WV, whom she met while working at the West Virginia State Fair. They wed on October 20, 1973 and just celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage. They have two children, Cynthia Hurd, married to Ricardo Gonzalez, of Annapolis Maryland, and Matthew Hurd, married to Kristy Sloan Hurd, of Powellville, MD. Matthew and Kristy have two children, Brecken (14) and Brenna (11) who were the absolute light of their Nana's life. Sue is also survived by her sister and best friend, Barbara Clay Carr, married to Vincent Carr, of Woodford, VA and two sisters-in-law, Helen Hurd of Lewisburg, WV and Brenda Bluestone of Ithaca, NY. Sue graduated from Mullens High School in 1965 and although she was a Mullens Rebel, she was a passionate and enthusiastic fan of the West Virginia Mountaineers, never missing a game if she could help it, keeping up with the players and the stats, celebrating their highs and suffering their lows. She will forever be a Mountaineer. Sue worked as a legal secretary in Pineville, WV for 42 years, but it was her dedication to God and to her church that brought her the most joy and she served both with heartfelt devotion. She was a respected and beloved parishioner of Saulsville Baptist Church for most of her life and gave of her time as pianist, choir director, and Christmas play director for over 50 years. She also organized Vacation Bible School, assisted with Awana, worked bake sales, and enjoyed going on church trips when she could. She loved this state, she loved her home and the roots she had here, she loved the animals she rescued and adopted, and she loved her family fiercely. She was a wife, a daughter, a mother, a nana, a sister, a cousin, and a friend to so many people and she will be missed more than she could have ever, ever imagined. Linda Joyce Stewart, 81, passed away Saturday, October 28, 2023, in Hot Springs, VA. Born April 15, 1942, in Cedar Grove, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Altizer, Sr. and Elva Graham Altizer. Linda enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking and listening to Vince Gill. She absolutely loved spending time with her grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Charlie Altizer, Jr. and a sister, Juanita Lester. She will be dearly missed by her husband of sixty-nine years, Cecil Stewart; her six children, Gerald Stewart, Sheri McMillion and husband Kevin, Regina Blake and husband Nick, Tracy Sewart and wife Melinda, Beverly Fralin and Roger Altizer; seven grandchildren, Cassie, Megan, Drew, Ericia, Sandra, Delayni and Conner; eight great-grandchildren; her siblings, Louise Carothers, Frazier Altizer and George Altizer; special friends, she loved as sons, Jimmy Browning and Teddy Hazelton; a host of extended family; and countless friends. Nancy Louise Clay, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died Monday, October 23, 2023, at her home in Saulsville, WV. The daughter of the late Wayne and Alpha Clay, Nancy was born in Maben, WV on Jan 23, 1938. Nancy lived in Maben, WV and Glen Rogers, WV before moving to Saulsville which she proudly called home. Nancy taught for over 30 years at various schools in Wyoming County including John McGraw Elementary, before retiring in 1996 from Glen Fork Elementary. She had the pleasure of teaching each of her 3 sons, Donald, Steve, and Jeff during her exemplary career. Nancy was an active long-term member of Saulsville Baptist Church, singing in the choir and joyfully serving in Church bake sales and various community events. She loved cooking, sewing, gardening, taking pictures, scrapbooking, and travelling, having visited each of lower 48 states and Canada. She loved documenting the history of her family, friends, town, and county compiling multiple scrapbooks and diaries preserving memories to share. Nancy loved spending time with family and friends no matter the location or occasion. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; 2 brothers, Alvin and Robert and her sister, Doris Bialas. Those left to cherish her memory are her sons Donald and his wife Kathy of Saulsville, Steve and his wife Sue of Saulsville, and Jeff and his wife Sue of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren Kim and her husband Claude, Jonathan, Steven and his wife Page, Cory, Kristin and Tyler; great-grandchildren Jadin and his wife Ashley and Carli. Ernest "Ernie" F. Browning Sr. , passed away peacefully on Thursday October 19, 2023, at VCU Medical Center in VA. Born March 1, 1948, in Pineville, he was the son of the Late Frank Ernest Browning ad Gladys Blankenship Browning. Ernie was a veteran of the US Navy. He loved to hunt and enjoyed traveling with his job. His greatest love was his spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his brothers, Freddie and Darrel and his sister, Brenda. Joyce Vivette Cook left this world on October 12th to be with the Lord and her beloved husband. Joy was the daughter of the late Bernie and Ethel (Bradbury) Short of Clear Fork WV. Joy was a homemaker, a headstart teacher in 1972 and a teachers aide from 1973 to 1995. Joy was a member of the Clear Fork Advent Christian Church for seventy eight years where she served as a Sunday School teacher, song leader, member of the quartet and church treasurer. Joy was a founding member of the Gospel Proclaimers where she sang with her husband Gene and family. Joy was preceded in death by her parents Bernie and Ethel (Bradbury) Short of Clear Fork WV, Beloved husband Gene Tunney Cook, son Anthony Brett Cook, son-in-law Will Stewart and grandson Jonathan Stewart. Sisters Geneva (Neva) (Short) Pennington. Esther (Short) Hicks, and brothers Gene Short, and Clarence (CD) Short. Robert "Wayne" Goode, 87, of Rockview, WV passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 12, 2023 with his children by his side. Born February 8, 1936 to Virgil and Vena Vance Goode of Pineville, WV. Wayne graduated from Pineville High School in 1955. He played football and basketball alongside his brother Fred all four years of high school. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Karen Hughes, July 9, 1960. Wayne worked 33 years for CNG Transmission Corporation retiring February 1, 1991. Wayne was an avid sports fan, always supporting local youth and high school teams. He managed, coached and mentored kids for Pineville Little League and Senior League Baseball teams as well as his own sons, in the 70's and 80's. He was fondly remembered as Coach Goode who loved his team as his own children. Wayne enjoyed watching all local high school boys and girls teams, as well as middle school. He rarely missed a game enjoying generations of Pineville and Wyoming East sporting events. . Wayne enjoyed hunting, fishing and 4 -wheeling in the mountains. He was a great story teller, entertaining his family and friends with his wisdom and tales of his youth. His memories of childhood were very happy ones. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life to the fullest. He had a big personality that was full of humor and compassion. He loved his family, friends and his community. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Virgil and Vena Goode, the love of his life Karen, his brother Fred Goode, and a sister Louise Baugess. He is survived by his loving children, Susan Powell (Randy) of Wake Forest, NC, Debby Clay (Ray) of Saulsville, WV, Greg Goode (Heather) of Wake Forest, NC, and Wesley Goode (Sandra) of Wake Forest, NC. His oldest brother, Joe Goode of Pineville and a sister Francis Byrd of Pineville WV. His legacy will be cherished and remembered by his grandchildren whom he loved very much, Ashley Higgins (Jon), Andrew Powell, Kamden Powell, Samantha Clay, Savannah Hall (Logan), Senetha Thornton (Derick), Madison Goode, Evan Goode, Kathryn Goode and Wyatt Goode. His great grandchildren, Lily and Alexander Higgins, Sydney, Gage and Jake Powell, Sailor and Sage Hall, Deacon and Roman Thornton.
