Sven Sundberg of Asheville, North Carolina, passed October 3, 2023 Born September 19, 1964 in Jackson Heights, New York, Sven was fifty-nine Sven lived in many states over his lifetime including New York, Connecticut, Kansas, Arizona, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Washington and, most recently, North Carolina Sven attended high school in Illinois and Missouri, graduating in Missouri, and held degrees in Accounting and Computer Science from Quincy College in Quincy, Illinois Sven described himself as a "busy non-profit executive" and took joy in his work Sven was an accomplished contemporary instrumental musician with licensing successes and several awards He composed eleven albums with over 100 songs that can be found online A source of pride for Sven was the opportunity to receive lessons as a child from John Steinway (of Steinway Pianos) His hope was to write memorable melodies that were timeless and inspiring to his listeners His wish was, "my music will be thought of as worth listening to long after I'm gone " He was preceded in death by his parents, Sven Roland Sundberg and Dorothy Marie Sundberg, and siblings, Carl Schlemer and Lester Schlemer Sven is survived by his twin sister, Monica Qualls (Brent) of Colorado, Linda Sue Johnson of Illinois, Charles "Rusty" Schlemer of Arkansas, Debra Zandstra Baker (Marty) of Tennessee, Tammy Wheelan of Tennessee, and sixteen nieces and nephews Special mention to his surviving dear friends, Michael DeBeaulieu and Robert Holman of Springfield, Illinois, and Moshe Reshef and Heather Seager of North Carolina Sven's ashes will be spread in Lick Creek Wildlife Refuge in Springfield, Illinois, with family and friends

Sally Marie Cutshaw (ne: Smith), 81, of Asheville, NC, passed away on November 22, 2023 after a long struggle with Alzeimer's disease. Sally was born on August 15, 1942 to Donald and Margie Smith in Mobile Al. After graduating from Murphy High School in Mobile, Al she went on to attain a Bachelor's Degree in Recreation from Florida State University. While in college, she met Charles Q Cutshaw. The soon wed and had three children, Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr, Michael J. Cutshaw (1970-1987) and Andrea L. Cutshaw. When Sally had Chuck, she decided to dedicate her life to being a wonderful and caring mother. Sally threw herself into raising her children and was constantly involved in their activities. She was a cub scout leader, attended many sporting events, worked tirelessly and supported them through the many passions and difficulties of their adult lives. Whether that was supporting her husband, Charles, when he had to leave the Army using her lifelong passion of giving, or supporting Andrea as a single mother by baby-sitting, she made it her mission to improve the lives of her family and others. Sally was a passionate gardener when she wasn't filling her home with warmth and kindness, she could be found in her garden, weeding, repotting, and pruning. We will miss her greatly. Sally was predeceased by her brother Donald L. Smith, Jr, her sister, Margie Cagle and her son, Michael J. Cutshaw. She is survived by Charles Q. Cutshaw, Jr and Andrea L. Cutshaw and her grandchildren Kayleigh I. Cutshaw, Brianna M. Kitzhoffer, and Isaiah M. Darity. The family will receive friends on December 5, 2023 from 10 to 11AM at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. Asheville - Robert G. "Cat" Benson, 92, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Charles George VA Medical Center. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Horace Benson, Sr. and Nellie Emma Warren Benson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Jane Waldroup Benson; son, Robert "Pee Wee" Benson; great-grandson, Alexandar Benson; sisters: Arney Fields, and Betty Moore; and brothers: Horace Benson, Jr. and J. B. Benson. Mr. Benson retired in 1991 following 30 years of service with the U. S. Army as a Combat Engineer, having served in Korea and Vietnam, and formerly employed with Fisher Flooring. He was a longtime member of the VFW Post #891, and Morning Side Baptist Church. Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Ronn Benson and wife Sarah of Asheville; grandchildren: Ron Benson, II and wife Stephanie of Newport News, VA, Bryan Benson and wife Elise of Stuttgart, Germany, and Penny Sue Benson of Asheville; great-grandchildren: Olivia, Warren, Jacob, and Madelyn; brother, Jack Benson and wife Nora of Asheville; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM on Friday, December 8, 2023, in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Nathan Cravette and Tim Warren officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 10:30 AM till 12:15 PM at the funeral home. Asheville - Sandra Elaine Sparks Sprinkle, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at her home while surrounded by family. A native of Mitchell County, she resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Avery and Oleta Duncan Sparks, and was also preceded in death by her son, David Larry Sprinkle, II. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of over 62 years, Rev. D. Larry Sprinkle; son, Stephen Scott Sprinkle and wife Ericka; granddaughters: Kennedy Sprinkle, and Avery Sprinkle; brother, David Sparks and wife Libby; special cousin, Karen Sprinkle; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Victory Baptist Church, 80 Olivette Rd, Asheville, NC 28804, with her husband, Rev. D. Larry Sprinkle and her son, Rev. Stephen Scott Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12 till 2 PM at the church. Betty Jean Conner Lance passed away December 1, 2023, at the age of 86. Betty Jean was born November 28, 1937, in Fairview, NC to the late Homer Conner and Fairlee Searcy Conner. She was also preceded in death by her siblings; James Conner, Mary Conner Daniels, Frank Conner, Shirley Conner Guinn and Bill Conner. She grew up in Candler where she met Jerry Lance. They married and were one month short of their 66th anniversary. Betty Jean was much loved by family, friends and business clients and touched many people during her life. She was labeled the community librarian because of her ferocious desire to order and read books which she would pass on to family and friends after finishing reading them. She was affectionately called "Girlpop" by her oldest grandkids and "Sugar" by the younger grandkids. During her life, she worked in church activities and children sports with her husband. She had a career in banking and through company programs lacked only a few hours in obtaining a degree in business. Betty Jean is survived by her husband Jerry Lance; three children, Brad Lance (Ashley), Denise Bordeaux (John) and Paul Lance; six grandchildren Clay Bordeaux (Brittany), Casey Bordeaux, Corey Bordeaux, Parker Lance, Leighton Lance and Porter Lance and one great grandson, DJ Jacobs. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 1:00 to 1:30 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Derrick McCarson officiating.
