Sue Turner Harvey entered into heaven peacefully Sunday, September 10, 2023, surrounded by her family. Born January 1943, she was the daughter of the late Herman Lonzo Turner, Sr. , and Johnnie Shultz Turner. Sue was a member of First Baptist Church of Gastonia for 39 years and a former charter member of Taylor Memorial Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and was a GA leader and girls camp chaperone. Her greatest memories were of attending The Salvation Army Church with her Uncle Billy Joe and Aunt Geraldine in her youth, learning to play trumpet and drums under Captain Boyette. Sue worked for Threads Incorporated for 16 years in the shipping and lading office and was often up to antics with her fellow office girlfriends, much to her managers' amusement, once talking their manager into letting them all have time off to see a famous hair designer in town - only to arrive at work the next day with her hair cut like Buster Brown. She worked off and on through the years preparing income taxes during tax season for multiple tax preparers, including one season as a key punch supervisor at Cherry Bekaert and Holland. She also worked as a sales associate for a year at Hayes in Ranlo, NC, before the company closed. She found her true calling when she became part of the Gaston County School System. She was a school bus driver for Forest Heights Elementary for 22 years and worked many years as a much sought after substitute schoolteacher and later as an assistant schoolteacher at both Forest Heights Elementary and Grier Junior High School before retiring in 2004. Sue had a tremendous love for children and a gift of making each child feel special. She never missed an opportunity in retirement to stop and talk to a child to tell them something wonderful about themselves. Nothing gave her more joy than her family. A loving wife, mother, and mother-in-law, she is survived by the love of her life, her husband and best friend of 61 years, James Richard Harvey, daughter, DeDe Harvey Gerhart, and son-in-law, Jay Alan Gerhart of Gastonia, NC, her brother, Danny Turner, and wife, Laura Turner, of Mount Holly, NC, and beloved Uncle, Billy Joe Shultz, of Gastonia, NC, along with numerous nieces and nephews and her dear friend, Patti Hege, of Gastonia, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Harold James Turner and Herman Lonzo Turner, Jr. and his wife Sue Fuller Turner, sisters, Edith Yvonne Frady and Linda Yoder and her husband Steve Yoder, and her very special aunt, Geraldine Shultz. The family would like to thank Caromont Hospice and Home Instead for their services, most especially Sherry Whitley and Tamara Edwards for their excellent care these last 3 years. To honor her life, donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association Western Carolina chapter at www. alz. org or to First Baptist Church of Gastonia PO Box 6298, Gastonia, NC 28056. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, September 13, 2023 - 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church, 2650 Union Road, Gastonia, NC, 28052. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont, NC. Condolences may be made online at: www. greenefuneral. com. Born in a small town, Penny's formal education reached the 11th grade, but her life experiences and wisdom far surpassed any academic measure. Penny, who was a yarn-winder at Pharr Yarns, was a woman of quiet strength, her modest demeanor demonstrating a heart full of love. Her infectious smile had the power to brighten even the dreariest of days, and her gentle presence brought comfort to those around her. Penny's passion for gardening and flowers was a testament to her nurturing spirit. The beauty she cultivated in her garden reflected the warmth she spread to everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her green thumb extended beyond plants; Penny nurtured the bonds of family and friendship with equal care. As a mother, Penny provided unwavering support and guidance to her son, Dale, and daughter, Teresa.
