Steven Gene Axelrod, age 85, passed away at 1:40 PM on Tuesday August 29, 2023, with family by his side. Steve was born in Peoria, Illinois on January 8, 1938, to Earl and Natalie (Kohn) Axelrod. Surviving is his loving wife of nearly 59 years, Linda (Hazzard) Axelrod and their children David (Deborah) Axelrod and Julie (Harry) Hodges. Also surviving are his brother, Gary Axelrod, grandchildren Tyler (Caroline) Hodges, Alissa (Ryan) Harkins, Brandon (Ashley) Axelrod, Jonathan (Meghan) Axelrod, and Lindsey (Derek) Hobbick. Steve and Linda shared the joy of their 10 great-grandchildren as well, all of whom cherished him. Steve was loved dearly by those he touched with his distinct personality. His influence sculpted the lives of many friends, colleagues, students, and athletes where he spent his life serving. Steve graduated from Peoria Central High School, class of 1955. He was a multi-sport athlete with high accomplishments in football, wrestling, and baseball. Following his high school education, Steve briefly wrestled for Bradley University, where he was compelled to join the United States Army Reserves. Because of his incredible athleticism, he was a member of the United States Army baseball team. After 6 months of active duty, he was honorably discharged to continue his education at Eureka College. While earning his bachelor's degree in physical education, he participated in football and track, making life-long friends. He later earned his master's degree in cultural studies from Governor's State University. His teaching career began in Niles, IL, followed by Wilmington High School where he coached both football and wrestling. Two years later, he began teaching and coaching at Tinley Park High School, where he finished his professional career after 30 years. He taught history, social studies, physical education, health, and driver's education. The highlights of his career include having Vice President Ford come speak at the high school to recognize their two year winning streak in football, coaching the 1986 4A state champion football team, having teams place in the top 10 of the IHSA wrestling finals 3 times, coaching many wrestlers to individual success in state championship tournaments, and being named Coach of the Year in 1977. Finishing his wrestling coaching career with a record of 121-53-3, Steve was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2014. Among his highly decorated coaching career at Tinley Park lies his greatest accomplishment, meeting his wife Linda, who taught Biology and French. Steve's retirement years were spent with his beloved wife, Linda, enjoying lake life, friends, and family. After moving to East Peoria in 1999 to be near his family, Steve volunteered at OSF St. Francis Medical Center and the GHAA baseball league. His days were filled by playing golf, watching football, and spending as much time with his grandkids as possible, attending their various sports and activities. A memorial service will be held Friday, October 6th from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Monte Cristo Room in Germantown Hills for friends and family to honor this incredible man. Cremation rites have been accorded. On October 7th, the family will lay him to rest at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Oak Lawn, IL. The Cremation Society of Mid-Illinois Co. Barbara A. Payne, 82, passed away Friday, November 24 at home with her daughters. She was born in Tovey, Illinois on January 20, 1941 to Antone and Flora (Moriconi) DuPage. On December 20, 1969, Barb married J. Douglas Payne; they were partners for over 42 years until his death on February 20, 2012. Also preceding her in death are her parents; and one nephew, Stephen Minch. Barb adored her family and is survived by: one son, Brad (Nancy) Korb of Burbank, California; two daughters, Sara Blackburn and Elisa (Patrick) Davidson both of Pekin; five grandchildren, Courtney, Tyler, Xavier, Kyle, and Sutton; one great granddaughter, Dylan; one sister, Patricia (Jerry) Minch; and one cousin, Loretta Tucker who was like a sister to her. As a Devote Catholic, Barb was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Altar & Rosary Society. She was a graduate of Pekin Community High School and St. Francis School of Nursing. She worked as a nurse for many years. Additionally, she and her husband owned Payne Realty. She was a lifelong selfless care-giver for her patients, family, and friends; she always found opportunities to serve others. Barb loved animals, especially her many dogs, cats, and horses. She enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, and watching a beautiful sunrise or sunset. Barb was an avid reader and liked to watch crime dramas. Above all, Barb was fiercely loyal and loving to her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a friend to so many and was known for her generosity and kindness. Barb will be greatly missed. A funeral mass will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 24, 2023 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Father Michael Andrejek as celebrant. Visitation at the church will be held one hour before the mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Pekin. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Vincent DePaul Food Pantry, Tazewell Animal Protective Society (TAPS), or the Alzheimer's Association.Show more

Phyllis E. Orr passed away Thursday, November 23 at 9:45 AM at the age of 94 years old. She was born in Peoria, Illinois on March 23, 1929 to Louie and Dora Dean Serino, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, Robert S. Orr, who she married on February 3, 1951. She leaves behind three sons: Larry of Pekin, Steve (Cathleen) of Buffalo, Wyoming, and David of Cary, North Carolina. Four grandchildren: Jamie (Tim) Nelson, Travis (Nicole) Orr, Derek (Kristin) Orr, all in the Raleigh area and Lacey (Paul) Smith of Atlanta, Georgia. Eight great-grandchildren: Grant, Clara, Evelyn and Zach Nelson, and Isabella, Olivia, Jackson and Emma Orr. She also leaves a sister, Mary Lauderback of Pekin, a nephew Lee (Pam) Lauderback of Fort Collins, Colorado and a niece, Lynn Lauderback of Florida. Phyllis attended Pekin Community High School, graduating in 1946, and received a bachelor of arts degree from Bradley university in 1950. She was a member of the Chi Omega sorority, serving as President her senior year. She taught second grade at Georgetown School in North Pekin for four years before being a stay-at-home mom. Later, she taught kindergarten and 6th grade in Pekin. She also substituted in various grades over the years. She was active in her children's activities during those years, serving as Den Mother in the Cub Scouts, PTA president, and following the sports activities they were engaged in. Phyllis was very active on many service boards and social organizations all her life, including serving as president, secretary, and/or treasurer on: Pekin Chapter of the American Red Cross, the United Way, Dirksen Guild, YWCA, Y Reserves, and Church Women United. She was also a member of the chapter LM of the PEO Sisterhood, where she served as president and other positions. She was a lifelong member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, where she was director of the Altar Guild for over 40 years, a member of the Vestry, and active in the Episcopal Churchwomen. Phyllis and Bob were blessed with their 72 years of marriage. They enjoyed traveling throughout this country and abroad, the theater, dancing, playing bridge with friends, attending sports events and family events and activities. They especially cherished the bi-annual family vacations they planned. Over the years there were many of these to many different places, and as the family grew and spread out across the country, it was a means of keeping the bonds of family alive. She will be missed by all. Visitation for Phyllis will be from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Saturday, December 2, 2023 at Henderson Funeral Home and Crematory. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM. Billy H. Pollard, 92, formerly of Pekin, IL, died on Monday, November 20, 2023, at The Loft Nursing Home in Eureka, IL. He was born on July 29, 1931, to Charlie and Lovie Pollard in Selmer, TN. On August 9, 1952, Billy married Betty J. Maroney. They were married 65 years before she preceded him in death on June 23, 2017. Billy was further preceded by a son, William "Bill" Pollard; daughter, Bonnie Painter; two sisters, Marie and Joyce; four brothers: Hoover, R. B. , Chuck, and Rayburn; and an infant grandson. He is survived by two sons, Randy (Karen) Pollard of Germantown Hills, IL and John (Debi) Pollard of Peoria, IL; daughter-in-law, Rozan Pollard; 11 grandchildren: Anita (James), Jessica (Roy), Brandon (Crystal), Rachel, Bradley (Heidi), Timothy (Carly), Amy (Scott), Katie (Josh), Adam (Kaitlyn), Seth, and Kaitlyn (Cecil), 15 great-grandchildren, 6 nieces and 12 nephews. Soon after graduating high school, Billy joined the United States Army and served from 1948 to 1952. He later moved to Peoria where he joined the Peoria City Police Department and worked over 20 years for the department, retiring in 1982. After retirement, he then worked in the security department at Methodist Medical Center. Billy was a member of the Illinois Police Association, Peoria Police Benevolent Association, National Rifle Association, American Legion Post 983, Pekin Moose Club Lodge 916, and VFW Post 814. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at 11:00 a. m. with a visitation a half hour prior at The Wilton Mortuary. Mike was born to Ellis McCleery and Mildred Louise McCleery on June 20, 1951. He married Glenda S Huffhines on May 20, 1986 in Pekin, IL and she preceded him in death on November 21, 2016. Mike was also preceded in death by his parents, and grandson Koby M Guengerich. Surviving are four daughters: Kindra Huffman of Creve Coeur, IL, Kelly Huffman of St Petersburg, Fl, Dusty (Marty) McCleery- Donath of Pekin, IL, and Corrie (Alex) Plunkett of Bartonville, IL. One brother, Robert (Debra) McCleery, and one sister Patricia Worrick both of East Peoria, IL. 5 Grandchildren: Kaila, Jordyn, Dakota, Londynn and Sailor. 3 Great- Granddaughters: Maddie, Jayde, and Tatum, along with many nieces and nephews. Mike served his country in the United States Army, a veteran of Vietnam. Mike was a self-employed carpenter, working many years in construction, he also worked in Prison Ministry and served diligently up until his illness, spreading God's word to encourage and uplift inmates. Mikes family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to Jordyn Thomas for her unconditional love and care to Mike in his final months fighting this illness, which allowed him to be comfortable at his home in peace.
