To his sons, Steve Graham was renowned for his good looks, athleticism, charm and supreme manliness Truly godlike among mortals, this fine figure of a man was an idol to children of all ages and the ultimate authority on all things mechanical and Monty Python-related To those who loved him, he will forever simply be "the greatest" Steve was born at Kalispell General Hospital on June 18, 1957 to Lucille (PeeWee) and Keith Graham, the second youngest of six kids In a life's journey that spanned nearly all 50 states and multiple continents, this man lived a life worth remembering From stock car racing and white-water kayaking, to saddle bronc riding, a brief attempt at hang gliding, and playing bluegrass banjo, he wasn't afraid to try anything He grew up reading great books, fishing and hiking in Glacier Park and later in life found his retirement bliss kayaking and hiking with our mom, family and friends, and teaching his grandchildren to fish off our family dock at the Ashley Lake cabin Raised a proud Evergreen Wolverine, Steve grew up tough and learned fast He excelled in high school football and track at Flathead High School, with college scholarships offered in both He opted for track at Montana State University, then promptly dropped out of college. . . because he was Steve He married his love, Barb White, in Kalispell in 1981 and went on to earn his bachelor's degree in business from the University of Montana in 1986 He had career paths encompassing multiple trades and disciplines The scope of his working life is too long to fit into anything short of a novel, but it included things like lumberjack, Culligan Man, director of a group home on the Fort Belknap Reservation, mechanic, carpenter, tribal college teacher, coach, school board member and cowboy He was a jack of all trades and a master of many For the last nearly 30 years before retirement, he and his brother-in-law Jerry built a corn seed distribution business in the Central Basin of Washington state There, Steve and Barb and their boys lived a wonderful country life in the farming community of Warden and made great friends His sons learned to ride horses, wrestle, and move irrigation pipe. . . a lot He was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother Dave, brother-in-law Charlie Thorne, Uncle Harry Burnell, and no-brother-good-in-law, Ken White He is survived by his beautiful Graham sisters, Maureena Watkins, Nora Thorne, Marcie (Louis) Krutsch, and Margie (Richard) Strack and their wonderful children and grandchildren He also leaves behind his in-law siblings, Lindy and Jerry Anderson, Bob and Laura White, Gwen White, and all their kids and grandkids The core of his family was his wife of 41 years, Barb, and his sons Cooper and his wife Brittany of Moses Lake, Washington, are the parents of Vincent (7), Sebastian (4), Lucian (1), and Baby Girl due in December Spencer and his wife Jenni of Covington, Washington, are the parents of Nyla (1) To his family and friends, Steve is irreplaceable He was the life of any gathering, generous, caring and fun He was a beloved and loyal husband and friend and a cherished brother He was an incredible father, grandfather, uncle, great uncle and cousin There will never be another man like the one that was lost in the early hours of Friday, September 29, 2023 It was raining in the Flathead Valley that night, which was fitting for the loss of one of its favored sons Our family would like to thank the neurosurgical team and entire ICU and palliative care staff at Logan Hospital in Kalispell for their incredible skill and compassionate care Your kindness will never be forgotten A memorial celebration will be held in the spring in Kalispell, Montana Details will be shared as they evolve A memory page is available on the website of Austin Funeral Home in Whitefish, Montana In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the public school scholarship fund of your choice

Norma Hornbacher

Age - 82

On Thursday, November 16, 2023, Norma June Hornbacher passed away after a brief illness. She was age 82. Many of her dearest friends and family visited her on her final day and her beloved daughter Stephanie and her sister Lois were by her side when she peacefully slipped away. Norma was a friend to all those lucky enough to know her, the most caring and loving mother and grandma, and a treasured sister, aunt, and friend. She was born June 4, 1941, at Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, the fourth of Carl and Esther Bergstrom's ten children. Like her siblings, Norma worked long days on the family farm. Her goofy humor, love for singing made-up songs, and zest for life helped make weeding the fields pass more quickly. A variety of escapades kept Norma on the edge of trouble and to her final days she loved a good pun, goofy turn of phrase, and a hearty laugh. We'll always remember some of her most famous phrases: "neither here nor there," "just a lick and a promise," "by hook or by crook," "hustle my bustle," "you lie like a rug," "you get what you get and you don't throw a fit" "garsh-all-hemlock" and countless others. These "abnormalisms," the color purple, colorful pins, and heart-shaped rocks are just a few things that make up the essence of our dear Norma. Norma attended a one-room elementary school in the Minneapolis area and then graduated from Osseo High School in 1959. She didn't follow her dad's pronouncement that she should become a missionary, but instead became a bit of an adventurer, going to North Park College in Chicago for two years, moving to southern California for a year, and attending the University of Minnesota, living with her sister Joyce. After a short stint in Illinois working at a children's home, she moved to the Bay Area to live with sister Arlene, where she heard Martin Luther King, Jr. speak in San Francisco and worked at a bookstore across from the Berkeley campus. Back in the Midwest during the Vietnam War-era teacher shortage, she was hired as a teacher at a country school in Mt. Morris, Michigan. One day while picking up some library books in Flint to bring back to her classroom, she encountered a good-looking stranger. He ambled over, picked up one of her books and said "Hmm, Cowboy Songs for Kids, that's right up my alley. " After that, as she said, the rest was history and she married her Chuckie baby, Charles Hornbacher, on June 21, 1969. Daughter Stephanie Rae - the true light of her life - was born in June, 1970. Not long after Stephanie's birth, Chuck saw a photo of Montana and decided to move his family to Columbia Falls, sight unseen, no jobs, no place to live, towing a small U-Haul with all their worldly possessions and a canoe on top. Chuck, a gifted jack-of-all-trades, built them a nice home on Elk Park Road with a big garden, a variety of cats and dogs that Norma mostly tolerated, and surrounded by neighbors who became lifelong friends. When Stephanie attended Deer Park School, Norma served on its school board. She also participated in charity drives, sold produce at the farmers' market, joined local ladies' clubs, was a 4-H leader, and organized an annual fundraising talent show. For several years, she and Chuck made and sold wooden toys and ornaments at craft fairs. Norma also served as an usher at community concerts and sold tickets at sporting events in Columbia Falls for many years. Norma grew up in the Covenant Church and attended First Baptist Church in Columbia Falls throughout her life. Her Christian faith and church family were so important to her. She loved gospel music, hymns, and daily devotionals. Her family is so grateful that her loving church friends were always there for her. Thank you to pastors Buchanan and Dobson for truly caring about Norma. In the 1970s, Norma began her long career in the Columbia Falls Public Schools as a paraeducator for all grades. Generations of students remember her fondly. In the 1980s she started working summers as a visitor use assistant in Glacier National Park and she was the friendliest attendant at the west entrance gate for many years. In Glacier she found friends who liked to recreate every weekend with her. With the Mountain Mamas and others, Norma had probably hiked every trail in Glacier National Park and cross country skied countless miles, although she couldn't have told you where the trail was or how long it was - she just remembered the stories told along the way. She was so proud to share the beauty of Glacier with family and friends who visited Montana. Norma found her greatest joy connecting with friends and family. She remembered the birthdays of all her loved ones and kept every letter they sent, she clipped newspaper articles about people she knew, stayed in touch with her siblings through weekly phone calls, and loved to take photos so she could share stacks of snapshots with anyone she could convince to look through them. Norma famously wrote everything on her wall calendar, from the day's weather to the hike she did, so she could always remember the who and the what of her daily life. Although she couldn't figure out how to operate an alarm clock to save her life, she was sharp as a tack, especially about spelling, grammar, and language. She loved playing Scrabble, played Rummikub and watched Wheel of Fortune nightly with Chuck, and completed daily crossword puzzles. Playing all those games was her way to have fun, connect with other people, and keep that quick wit active. Norma's youthful spirit and spunk made her the perfect grandma and favorite playmate to Madison, her only grandchild and pride and joy. They spent hours playing make believe and other games when Madison was young. Just like she had for daughter Stephanie, Norma attended all of Madison's performances and sports events while she was able. Norma was so proud of both her daughter and granddaughter and loved to brag about Stephanie and Madison's beauty, smarts, and accomplishments. Norma was preceded in death by her husband Chuck, and siblings Arlene Coggburn, Bill Bergstrom, Carl Bergstrom, Carolyn Sosnoski, Joyce Bergstrom, and Sandy Sanchez. Her family left behind will miss her deeply. They include daughter Stephanie Gordon, granddaughter Madison Rose Gordon and son-in-law Steven Gordon; sisters Lois (Lance) Schelvan and Adele (Jeff) Light; brother Jim (Diane) Bergstrom; sisters-in-law Grace Bergstrom and Julanne Bergstrom; brothers-in-law Don Sosnoski and Joe Sanchez; and her many beloved nieces and nephews. A very special thanks to the loving caregivers and staff at Beehive Assisted Living in Columbia Falls and Norma's long-time physician Dr. Jay Erickson. Dr. Mitch Marzo was a wonderful support to Norma during several recent hospital stays. Several friends provided such loving care to Norma in her last years of life including Barb and Dave, Carmen, Cheryl, Darleen, Marie, Jean, Sara, Susan, and her sister Lois and brother-in-law Lance. Carmen and sister, Lois, were especially special caregivers to both Norma and Chuck. Dear friends supported Stephanie as she cared for her parents - a special thank you to Carrie, Darcie, Jamie, Jessica, Jolene, Leana, Quinn, Shelly and their families, and countless others who provided emotional support throughout this difficult journey. Nell Kelly

Nell Dean (Foster) Kelly 1935-2023 The second of four children, Nell was born in Amarillo, TX in 1935, to Emma Della Summerville and Charles Alonzo Foster. Emma and Charles were two tough and shrewd ranchers born near the beginning of the 20th Century . When Nell was nine months old, the family moved to Aumsville, OR. She remembered her mother listening to the radio, worried about her older brother, Charles Jr. , who fought in the Pacific in WWII. Nell helped raise two more younger brothers, Jerry and Dan, and a variety of animals on the small family farm. She picked strawberries in the summer to buy new school clothes. Nell was a gifted athlete and not afraid to outshine the boys on the baseball field. They frequently chased her home in their frustration. The expression, "Run to the roundhouse, Nellie, they can't corner you there!" often rang through the neighborhood. Nell's adventurous spirit made her opt to fast track her professional career and leave Oregon State after 2 years. Instead, she hopped a bus to Hollywood, CA, where she passed her teletype exam and became a flight attendant for Pan Am. The country girl traveled all over the western hemisphere and transformed herself into an independent, fun-loving, cosmopolitan woman. It wasn't long before some of the men she was running away from caught her. In 1963, one lucky one did, Parker Siegert Kelly, Esq. and they spent the next 60 years together. Calling the San Francisco peninsula her home, Nell worked for many years at the AAA legal insurance firm Nagle, Vale, McDowell and Cotter as a legal secretary and juggled the kids, groceries, cooking, laundry and the whims of her husband. Selfless to a fault, her only guilty pleasures were dime novels, happy hour and episodes of Perry Mason. Dutiful, unassuming and never a bother, she loved her family, her dogs and gave all that she had to them. She was a calming influence on everyone who spent time with her. Nell passed peacefully on October 8th with family by her side, as the golden leaves of her favorite season floated in the Montana breeze, and country music played on the radio. Nell is survived by her son, Parker Jr. , her daughter, Nancy, her two grandchildren Ashlyn and Austin, and her dog Heloise. Kenneth Stenger

Kenneth E Stenger passed away October 30, 2023 in Whitefish, Montana. He was born May 17, 1938, in Great Falls, Montana. He was the second child born to Edward and Helen Stenger. Ken attended grades 1-12 in Stanford, Montana where he graduated in 1956. He was a member of the 1955 State Class C basketball team. He continued his education at Carroll College in Helena, Montana graduating in 1960. He entered the seminary to become a Catholic priest, but later moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he taught. He returned to Montana and worked odd construction jobs around the state. Ken settled in Great Falls and began working for Morgen-Oswood in the early 70s. He later spent several years in Orlando, Florida working for Morgen-Oswood. He returned to Great Falls in 1978 and became a partner with Boettcher Paint Company until his retirement in 2015. When a man says as few words as Ken, it becomes difficult to use words to leave the reader with an all-encompassing understanding. Ken led by example and his actions moved mountains. He wasn't always the first to call but he was the longest to listen. His family and friends knew of his sacrifices and dedication, while his humility kept him from the spotlight. Ken moved to The Springs in Whitefish, Montana in 2018 to be closer to his two nieces. Ken was a devoted son, brother and uncle to his two nieces and nephew. We all have fond memories of his sporadic visits, camping trips, unique activities and the support of all our endeavors. Ken is predeceased by his parents, Edward and Helena Stenger, his sister Marian Stenger Rundquist and his only nephew John "Bob" Boadle. He is survived by his nieces, Jill Yost and Lynne Schweitzer, both of Eureka and his grandnephew, Eli Yost and grandniece, Jonna Yost Schwarz. At Ken's request there will be no funeral. On Sunday, October 22, 2023, Beth Ann Repke, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family whom she cared for and loved with all her heart. Beth will be forever missed by her husband John Repke, and their three children Rachel (Jack) Thompson of Whitefish, Meredith (Adam) Repke of Missoula, and Jack (Alexandra) Repke of Missoula, and by her grandchildren Audrey and A. J. Thompson, and Hope Repke. Beth is also survived by her mother Henrietta Kemper-Keith of Bentonville, AR, father Donald Owings of Bloomington, IN, sister Linda (Denver) Beatty of Houston, TX and brother Luke (Amber) Owings of Bloomington, IN. Beth was born November 25, 1957 in Bloomington, IN. Beth moved to Colorado Springs, CO in high school and later met John, her husband of 43 years, while attending Ohio State University. Beth earned a bachelor's degree from OSU in Home Economics. Beth's passions were sewing, quilting, cooking and interior design, starting with 4H as a child and continuing throughout her life. After marrying in Tulsa, OK in 1980, John and Beth moved to Gillette, WY, Castle Rock, CO, Littleton, CO, and then Naperville, IL where they spent 25 years raising their family. Beth was a member of P. E. O. Chapter NE and later Chapter BR, and was active in a number of community organizations. In 2013, John and Beth moved to Whitefish, MT full time where they enjoyed hiking and biking in Glacier National Park, canoeing on Blanchard Lake, and traveling with friends. As much as Beth enjoyed these activities, her favorite activity by far was doting on her grandchildren. Beth bravely fought her pancreatic cancer diagnosis for 14 months, seeking treatment at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD and Logan Health in Kalispell, MT. She gave us all the time she could. Thank you to all of the nurses, doctors and friends who went above and beyond to care for Beth. Paul Lee Wells (80), a long time resident and business owner in Whitefish, MT passed away on Sept 26, 2023 On the saddest day of our lives, we lost our beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend Paul was born on Jan 10, 1943, a snowy day in Middletown, OH to the late Orville and Gladys Egleston Wells He had two brothers, Darrald R Wells living in Hope Mills, N C and Sidney B Wells who preceded him in death After high school graduation in Kettering, OH and a year attending Sinclair Community College in Dayton, OH, Paul joined the U S Army in 1962 While enlisted, he was with the Green Beret Special Forces stationed in the Panama Canal Zone for three years After graduating from officer candidate school, he attended fixed wing flight school earning his commercial pilot license Paul spent two tours in Vietnam His first tour was with the 1st Engineer Battalion (better known as the Big Red One) as a combat engineer His second tour was spent as a pilot flying O-1 Birddogs and OV-1 Mohawks Paul was highly decorated during his time in service and was honorably discharged in 1973 Afterwards, he attended the University of Missouri - Rolla, earning degrees in Civil Engineering and Engineering Management He was hired as the sole engineer for the entire Jari rice project owned by Daniel K Ludwig on the Amazon River in Brazil Not only did he have to design the seed rice plant and rice mill, but all the infrastructure of the town of Sao Raimundo After completing this project, Paul and his family moved to Whitefish when he was hired as the City Engineer in 1980 He then decided to start his own consulting engineering firm and WMW Engineering opened for business on Feb 14, 1983 where he remained until he retired in 2019 Paul was an active member of the Rotary Club of Whitefish for many years as well as Pheasants Forever and the Moose Lodge He was still a proud member of the Quiet Birdmen Paul was also an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed MT life to the fullest With family and friends he was often busy hiking, fishing, hunting, camping, rafting/boating, biking, skiing or flying His hobbies also included building full size airplanes and he was able to complete three from start to finish over the years As a dedicated and loving father, he ensured that he always involved his children in the activities he loved or was supporting them in the activities they loved Paul is survived by his loving and devoted wife Carolyn Bozeman Wells, whom he married July 9, 1968 in Waikiki, Oahu, Hawaii He is also survived by three cherished children and two grandchildren - daughters Tonya L Wells (Rory Barton), Oak Park, IL and Cristy L Wells (Scott Fell), Columbia Falls, MT, son Evan S Wells, Whitefish, MT, grandchildren Nya Barton Wells and Calder Barton Wells, Oak Park, IL Besides his brother Darrald R Wells (Diane), Hope Mills, NC, he is survived by an aunt and uncle and several wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews He also leaves behind many amazing and loyal friends All who were fortunate enough to know Paul, both family and friends, will forever remember his great sense of humor and quick wit He brought so much joy and laughter to our lives and we'll miss him immenselyShow more
