Lee 'Steve' Broyles Sr. , 72, of Hot Springs, SD, passed away September 8, 2023, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hot Springs, SD, after a battle with stage 4 lung and bone cancer. Steve was born September 11, 1950, in Hot Springs, to Jesse and Clarice (Craft) Broyles. Steve was a twelve-year classmate of Hot Springs Schools and graduated from Hot Springs High School in 1968. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1970 and until his honorable discharge to continue serving in the U. S. Army National Guard. He was proud of his dedication to the U. S. A. and valued his Air Medal. He flew over 40 hours in combat zones during his tour in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star for service above and beyond the call of duty. His medals included National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service Star; Aircraft Crewman Badge; Bronze Star Medal; Air Medal; EX Badge with CB; SS Badge M-16 with Rifle Bar. Steve's career with Burlington Northern Railroad's Maintenance of Way started in 1976 as a laborer and he worked his way up to Track Foreman. He worked different steel and tie gangs and helped build the Orin Subdivision running from Rosette to Guernsey, WY. He also worked the local sections including Edgemont and Dewey, SD. When he would get furloughed from the railroad in the winter he would run up to 500 traps selling pelts to support his family and attended the Craig O'Gorman Trap School in Montana. He greatly enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing pool, rock collecting, would guide other hunters, and was involved with the Musket Loaders Club. His involvement in the community included membership in the DAV, VFW, and American Legion. Steve is survived by his children, Lacey (Zachary) Rapp of Buffalo Gap, SD; Lucas (Heather Uland) Broyles of Hot Springs; Misti (Jerome Krumm) Broyles of Sioux Falls, SD; Lee (Bonnie) Broyles Jr. of Gillette, WY; step children, James (Pam) Forbord of Hot Springs, SD; Angie (Craig Loomis) Knepel of Hot Springs, SD; Jodi (Billy III) Sides of Tennessee; Yvonne Clyde of Hot Springs, SD; sisters, Vicki (Donald) Benton; Karen Kalb; Mary Broyles; brothers, Duwayne Broyles; Billy Broyles; 21 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a host of lifelong local friends. Steve is predeceased by his parents; his siblings, Edward Broyles; Wayne Broyles Knoke; "Fritz" Broyles Knoke; Bernie Broyles Knoke; one grandchild and one great grandchild. Steve's celebration of life will be held 6:00 P. M. , Friday, October 6, 2023, at the American Legion in Hot Springs, SD. Please bring a potluck dish to share, life stories to share and visit while enjoying music. Committal services will be held 9:00 A. M. , Monday, October 9, 2023 at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD, with full military honors presented.
