Stephen Woodford was born on February 2, 1950 in Oakland, CA to B.W. and Betty Lou Woodford. Shortly after Stephen's birth, the family moved to Quincy, CA, a very segregated country town. His family returned to Oakland while Stephen was still a small boy, and it was there that he got the nickname “Sleepy.” As he grew up, he faced many temptations and battled through addiction. In 1989, he went into recovery and would stay sober from there on. Stephen would later move to San Francisco’s famed Fillmore district, where he made countless friends and memories. The great joy and highlight of his life (aside from music) was being an exemplary and involved father to his daughter, Stephanie L. Woodford, who was born in 1996. He was also a passionate and giving person. He loved having good conversations about everything from relationships to politics. He also loved reading books, watching movies and eating good food ( He was known for his "Gumbo"). Stephen is preceded in death by both his father and mother. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie his sisters Tracy and Myrtle Jean and nephews Daniel and William and a host of other family and friends of whom he loved.
