Stella B. Sanchez was born on December 26, 1938 to Emilio and Nena Banegas of San Ysidro (North of Las Cruces, New Mexico). She was a sister to Jimmy, Priscilla, and Rudy Banegas. A Rosary will be held at 10:00 am followed by Funeral Mass 11:00 am Thursday, July 7, 2022 at St. Albert the Great Newman Center 2615 S. Solano Drive, Las Cruces, New Mexico. Stella's life was shaped by her faith, friendships, and family. Professionally she served decades at New Mexico State University in various capacities within the Computer Center, President's Office, Special Events, and Athletics. She loved working with students and many referred to her as their College Mom. After retiring from NMSU, she began volunteering at St. Albert the Great Newman Center. While serving her community in the La Bodega food pantry, she effortlessly touched the lives of many with her welcoming words and contagious smile. Stories of Stella's life were often reminisced with her sister and closest friends. Whether it be family history with Priscilla, her childhood adventures with Blanca Strange and Nellie Donovan, the neighborhood update with Sue Theodorson, or the days at NMSU with Christina Chavez Kelley, these stories exemplified the importance of friendship to Stella. However, it was her faith-filled friendship with Father Ray Flores that brought a reassuring peace to Stella and her family when it was needed most. Stella was a devoted mother to Sam and Lisa. The need to share their celebrations and defeats was always welcomed and never subsided. Her cheers of joy, listening ear, and shoulder to cry on were constant and unyielding. As their greatest supporter, she embraced their spouses, Dawn and Russ, as her own. However, it was her grandchildren, Miranda, Hanna, Tanner, PJ, and Lyla, who lit up her whole world. She was born to be a grandmother and never fell short of that role. They are her legacy. Our beloved Stella passed away to be with the Lord on May 16, 2022 at her home in Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was surrounded by loved ones and will be missed by all who knew her. Sam and Lisa wish to express their most heartfelt gratitude to Priscilla Banegas, lovingly known as Auntie Prissy, for her compassionate care of their mother. The Family also extends a special thank you to Pat Lopez, Christina Chavez Kelley, Father Ray Flores, Father Francis Gyau, and the staff at Mesilla Valley Hospice for their unending support and prayer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Susan G. Komen at komen. org in honor of Stella. There are no gallery images.
