Wayne Phillips

Wayne Phillips

Age - 85

December 1, 2023

On Wednesday, November 29, Wayne Phillips, loving father, and husband, 85 departed his earthly life and entered eternal rest after a valiant battle with a long illness. His devotion to his family and firm belief in God supported him in his struggle and ultimately gave him peace. He was loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. He will never be forgotten, and his legacy will live on in his loved ones who will continue to honor his legacy by living their lives to the fullest. We thank you dad for all the calls, wise words of advice, the love you gave us and the beautiful lives we've lived because of you, your hard work, and boundless love for us. We are all better people because of you. We will forever keep you in our hearts with God. He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathryn Phillips, daughter Dawn Phillips, and son, David Phillips along with a host of cousins, adored nieces and nephews, and two rescue cats. He is preceded in death by his mother, Emma Mae Askew, his father, William Arthur Phillips, and brothers, Rex, and Arthur Phillips. Wayne was born on January 10, 1938, in Lenoir County and raised on a small farm in Snow Hill, North Carolina. Upon graduating from Edwards Military Institute where he met and married his much-loved wife, Kathryn. He went on to study Agricultural Science at North Carolina University in Raleigh, North Carolina while raising his first child, David. He loved baseball and tried out for the University's collegiate team. While he was proficient in batting, the coaches felt he ran the bases too slowly. Slowness would forever plague him in life, except when it came to reaching for the television's remote control, of which he was king of the channel changer. The origins of "channel surfing" are unclear, but Wayne mastered the art with an ability second to none. He enjoyed watching professional and collegiate sports, especially football and basketball teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference and believed he was more competent in officiating games from his living room than the appointed referees who, in his opinion, were incapable of presiding over a game especially when the calls went against his team. Adhering to the no profanity guidelines of this newspaper, the expletive free phrase, "Oh come on ref" will forever reverberate throughout our home. Like the television character, Archie Bunker, Wayne also had a favorite chair when watching sports that he only shared with the cats. From that chair he developed into a virtual Nascar driver or professional golfer on the PGA tour. Wayne's first job was as a salesman for Coastal Chemical Corporation in Greenville, North Carolina. He also worked as a buyer in the tobacco market for Imperial Tobacco Company. At times, the buyers had to wait around for hours until all the sales tickets had come in. This is when and where he honed his poker skills. Along with card games, he had a natural affinity for selling agricultural supplies and was top salesman at Coastal Chemical for many years. Wayne was nicknamed "Big Wayne" in reference to his big heart because he was always there to offer love, support, and encouragement. He showed unconditional love and generosity that especially extended to his children, allowing them to pursue their dreams even if they accidentally blew up the detached garage and got his company car stuck in the soft dirt of a tobacco field. Wayne was always a stylish dresser and well known for his daily "uniform". The staples in his closet included khaki pants that were too short, loafers, and the iconic red, white, or blue polo shirt, relaxed and comfortable enough so that it wouldn't hinder his arm movements. The only other shoes Waynewas ever seen wearing were his various, two-toned golf shoes with cleats that he kept in the trunk of his car along with his golf clubs. After retiring, Wayne would don this daily attire during his time spent chasing the odd bird: eagles, birdies, albatrosses, buzzards, and condors around local fairways with his friends, essentially making his wife a "golf widow. " He was fortunate to have attended the final round of the U. S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 in 1999 and witnessed one of the most famous golf competitions which ended on the 18th hole when Payne Stewart sank his putt and secured the win over Phil Mickelson. Wayne was a principled man of integrity and faith. In his later years, he deeply contemplated his faith, and he came full circle in his beliefs and recommitted himself to Christ. He would sit for hours in his office reading a bible. Wayne said he was, "not afraid to die" because of his faith in his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Even though he was occasionally frustrating, those who knew him are better people because of him. He will truly be missed and will never, ever, be forgotten. We will hold you in our hearts until we see you again. In accordance with his wishes, a graveside service for family and friends will be held on Tuesday, December 5th at 11:00 at Pinewood Memorial Park (4150 E 10th St) in Greenville, North Carolina. Pastor Leon Grubbs of Hull Road Original Free Will Baptist Church will officiate. A tribute wall for Wayne can be found on Legacy. com under Wilkerson Funeral Home Greenville.Show more

Our beloved father led us by example. He taught us many lessons of life which will be passed on for generations. Those lessons include to dwell on the good for the glass is always half full. Even during our toughest times he helped us to feel that things were not as bad as they seemed. He taught us to do what you say that you are going to do. His handshake was all you needed to know that he would honor what he told you. Pops was a simple and humble man who did not care about materialistic things. He was always doing things for his family, friends, and even complete strangers without expecting anything in return. His giving nature is one of his traits that will carry on through his family. Pops loved a good laugh. He had a great sense of humor and loved making others smile. He also loved telling family stories and wanted those stories passed on to the newer generation. He was proud of the farming legacy he helped build with his father and brothers. From putting in tobacco, planting corn, and harvesting the crops, some of our most cherished memories are doing those things with him. Although he loved so much on the farm, his passion was operating his Allis Chalmers Bulldozer. That was his favorite machine and the last one he got to operate. His farm is his legacy and will proudly be carried on to honor him. Pops would always say that all we have is each other, our family. His greatest wealth was his family who will cherish his memory always. He taught his family of his love of Jesus Christ. He had an unending faith, even during his recent years of sickness. While sick he could often be heard saying (Touch Me Jesus) or (Jesus, Take Me). He was not afraid of dying for he knew he was going to heaven. His greatest hope was that his family members would be saved so they would see him again one day in Heaven. The family would to thank Dr. Calvin Ellis, Gentiva Hospice, and all other health care workers who took care of Pops. We would also like to thank his personal caregivers - Amanda Briley, Peggy Forbes, Teresa Green, and Daisy Highsmith. A special thank you is given to April and Phil Jernigan for the care they gave their Daddy. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Wilkerson Funeral Home and at other times at his home in Stokes.
