George Shapland

George Shapland

Age - 92

December 2, 2023

George Thomas Shapland, 92, of Champaign, IL passed away peacefully Tuesday November 28, 2023, in his home. He was born March 4, 1931, to Earl and Lois Shapland of Champaign, IL. Those who wish to celebrate his life amongst family and friends is welcome to join us at the Champaign Country Club from 4:30-8:00 P. M. on Wednesday December 6, 2023. George was the youngest of five boys. He was preceded in death by his Parents, brothers John, Earl, Bob, and Jim, his Neice Sheri, his wife Nancy of 55 years whom he shared three children with. He is survived by his children, Charles (Julie) Shapland of Sidney, their children Nick and Hadley, Mark Shapland (Sue Nesbitt) of Chicago, his children Dan of Chicago, John and Drew of LaGrange, IL, their mother Debra Shapland, and Laura Shapland (Brent Koester), their daughter Chloe, stepdaughter Madison Koester and stepson Colton Koester. Also surviving are numerous Nieces and Nephews with whom he was blessed to have frequent visits, banter, and friendships with. George was involved in the Boy Scouts from a young age, eventually becoming an Eagle Scout as a teenager. He graduated as part of the well-known Champaign High School Class of 1949 (the '49'ers). From there he followed in the footsteps of his parents and brothers, attending the University of Illinois, where he eventually obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management, after he left midway through to serve in the U. S. Army Core of Engineers during the Korean War. He started Shapland Construction and ran it until 1973, at which time he started Flo-Con Systems with his Brothers Earl and Jim. He was in banking, real estate, auto dealerships, and served on numerous boards over the years as well. People will remember him as many things, but his family will remember his love and dedication. He married Nancy Hadley in 1963. His love of his family was endless, and his constant work to provide in every way was always on his mind. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, watching with pride as they continued to grow into their own. George loved life, and all that came with it. Even when his mobility became challenging, he persevered, never giving up. He could be found essentially every morning at the Original Pancake House greeted by the best crew of people who own and operate it. With the table of morning cohorts, the ever-growing table would meet to discuss the news of the day and opinions would abound. Though the group has sadly lost some good friends over the years, the table somehow always found a new participant and managed to keep moving forward. The achievements George amassed throughout his life were extensive. There aren't many areas in Champaign that don't have his touch. However, beyond his accomplishments he was a husband, father, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend to so many. His love of the University of Illinois and its sports teams were loyal through and through. His father Earl was a season ticket holder since Memorial Stadium opened in 1923, and he held tickets at the Assembly Hall since it opened in 1963. He attended countless Illini games through thick and thin. He served the University in many capacities over the years, including as a Board Member of the University of Illinois Foundation. George was always quick witted, and happy to stir the pot. His favorite part of this was setting the stage and watching it unfold from afar. His lifelong friendships and business ventures with Tom Harrington, Sr, and Joe Hallbeck were treasured, and many pranks were concocted between the three and played out on the unsuspecting, of course in the name of good fun. His knowledge of business and what the right thing to do for almost anything came naturally to him. He served as a mentor to countless tenants and friends. His vision for the community was something he always worked on. He could often be found driving around and working on the next vision as things evolved over time. Even after the age of 80, he developed Carriage Center, and worked to move the Ford City and Illini Nissan Dealerships to a better interstate location in Champaign. He would not consider a project he didn't feel was the best thing for the community he loved and dedicated much of his life to improving and growing. He will be missed greatly by his family, friends, and the Illini and Champaign community, but his Legacy will forever survive him. A quote from George in a News Gazette article from 2017 summarizes him best: "You don't do things to get recognition. It's the satisfaction of knowing you accomplished something and did something for your community. "In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The United Way of Champaign County, The Boy Scouts, and The H Foundation. Condolences may be offered at www. morganmemorialhome. com.Show more

Carolyn Wright

Carolyn Wright

Age - 79

November 30, 2023

Carolyn J. Thom was born in Farmer City on March 16, 1944. Carolyn is survived by her daughter Ann, grandson James, her son Ron (Mary) and her brother Delmar (Dian) Thom. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jim Wright and her brother Dale Thom. Carolyn is survived by many nieces and nephews, and many loving friends. Carolyn passed away November 18, 2023. Carolyn married the love-of her life Jim in 1963 and the two settled in Champaign to raise their family. In addition to their two children, both Jim and Carolyn loved dogs and their home was never without a pup or two; most were good dogs, but some were rascals. All were loved unconditionally. Similarly, Jim and Carolyn were committed to their children Ann and Ron. While Carolyn enjoyed a long career at the U of I Physics Business Office, Jim worked nights at the U of I while they created a loving home for Ann, Ron, and the dogs. Jim passed away in 1998 but the stories and memories of their 35-year love affair never faded. Carolyn was ahead of her time as an early technology adapter. The purchase of her first Mac in the early 1990s was just a first in a long line of pads, pods, and smart phones. She embraced the computer age with vigor! Carolyn was also a lifelong Cubs fan and attended her first Cubs game at Wrigley Field in 2015, in a slugfest against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cubs hit 5 home runs that game, to the delight of us all, however, it resulted in Carolyn's expectation that home runs are easy and plentiful. "The Cubs should just hit a home run. . . " she was often heard saying. If only. Carolyn's remains will be interred at Woodlawn Cemetery at a later date, reuniting with her husband Jim. Given her passion for all animals, especially dogs and cats, online contributions in her memory are welcomed at the Champaign County Humane Society, To to the family or in memory of Carolyn Wright, pleaseShow more
