Blackburn, Sidney Stephen "Sid", age 61, of Birmingham, Alabama, passed away, on Friday, September 8, 2023. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and grew up in Mountain Brook. Sid went to Auburn University and completed his Bachelor's Degree in Business at UAB. He worked in a variety of jobs in sales, and asbestos removal but his true talents was in his landscaping abilities. In his spare time, he enjoyed playing golf and hunting. Sid was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Begie Blackburn. He is survived by his sister, Susan Blackburn Neel (Rick); brother, Charles Rabb Blackburn, Jr. (Jackie), and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. There will be a private graveside service at Southern Heritage Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the charity of your choice.

On November 25 th 2023, God decided that he was ready for his faithful servant Alona to come home. Alona Sperling Cunningham was born on April 4, 1944 to the late Alex and Bama Lee Sperling of Birmingham, Alabama. She attended Tuggle Elementary School and A. H. Parker High School, where she graduated in January of 1961. Alona accepted Christ at an early age. She started taking piano lessons at the age of 10 and started playing for the Sunday School at Sardis Baptist Church at the age of 12. As a teenager she also played at Harmony Street Baptist Church. Alona attended Miles College for one year and then received a music scholarship to Jackson State University in Jackson Mississippi. At Jackson State she majored in music with a minor in Mathematics, and received her Bachelor's Degree in Music Education. During her time at Jackson State she met her future husband Jerry Cunningham while tutoring him in piano. After her matriculation at Jackson State she taught school in Jackson Mississippi briefly. Alona and Jerry would later make the move to Binghamton New York, where Alona received a fellowship to State University New York (SUNY) and received her Master's Degree in Music ducation. She has taught music at several schools throughout her musical career. She was the music teacher and choir Director at West End High School from 1994 to 2008. During her time at West End, she mentored and molded several students and also assisted in students receiving music scholarships. She also was the music teacher and Choir Director at Jackson Olin High School from 2008 until her retirement in 2010. Alona was a proud member of Birmingham Community Mass Choir for 25 years and she loved hanging out with her bonus sons, Jermaine, Eric, Donovan, Jonathan and Greg. She was the Director of Music at Sardis Baptist church for over 40 years where she taught Anthems, Spirituals, and Gospel Music. Alona was also a classically trained pianist and loved opera. In early 2019 she founded Sacred Harmony, a choral group of singers who loved to sing and Praise the Lord. This group gave her a lot of joy. She later joined First Memorial Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Al Moore and was a faithful member of the Music Ministry, Senior Adult, and Women's Ministry until her illness prevented her from doing so. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Alona loved to cook and was famous for her Cornbread Dressing, Spaghetti, Shrimp and Grits and Breakfast Casserole. If you ever ate one of her Cold Cut Sandwiches, you would never want to eat Subways again. Alona was meticulous about her music. If she taught you a part, she expected you to learn it. Alona was preceded in death by her parents, Alex and Bama Sperling, her sister Lenora Sperling Young and her brother Everette Sperling (Angeline). She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 58 years Jerry Cunningham, her children Audra Cunningham Streety and Damon Cunningham and her grandchildren whom she absolutely adored Justin Cunningham and Alexis Streety. She was also a stepmother to Victor Cunningham, Stephanie Herbert and Sheila Lipsey. Frank was born in Montgomery, Alabama at Maxwell Air Force Base in 1950 to James A. Price and Margaret A. Price (Hudson). Frank was partially raised by his beloved Aunt Jesse Adams and her husband Roy Adams. Frank was the oldest child of 7 siblings. Frank attended Marbury High School before studying at Alexander City Community College and would eventually earn his BS in Sociology at Bellevue University in Omaha Nebraska in 1999. Frank enlisted in the United States Air Force in December 1971 and had a highly distinguished and decorated military career for 21 years retiring as a MSGT in 1992. Upon retiring from the USAF, Frank worked as a civilian contractor to the military at Incirlik AFB outside of Adana, Turkiye before moving to Omaha Nebraska where he worked at a Commercial Real Estate firm. Upon moving back to Alabama he worked at the state EMA department retiring in 2012 to Fort Walton Beach, Florida. During his career Frank traveled the United States and over seas and was able to embrace and immerse himself in many cultures and enjoy the world, taking his children with him on experiences that would change their lives. Frank’s interests and hobbies included golfing, bowling, sports cars, airplanes, museums, traveling, attending rocket launches across the US, learning, building, repairing things, and Alabama Football. A great achievement later in life was that he completed a 5k and half marathon. Frank never met a stranger, and if you knew him then you knew why. He would make conversation with a stranger next to him in the grocery check out line and would have people two lanes over joining in and laughing along with his stories. His kindness and smile were infectious. If you knew him, even if you had just met him you would have felt like you knew him already. To his children he was the best father and grandfather, the love and support he showed them was unmeasured. He will be greatly missed and his memory will be cherished and honored each and every day. Frank was preceded in death by his mother and father, brother Phillip Price and sister Dorothy (Culver), half brother Patrick, half sisters Dixie and Marlene, very special Aunt Jesse Adams and is survived by his three children Staci, Leslie and Josh, grandson Foster, half brother Robert VanCleaf, special cousin Aaron Adams along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles and a loving family that surrounded him. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday December 6th 2023 Alabama National Cemetery at 3133 Highway 119 in Montevallo AL 35115, and the family will host a celebration of life following the ceremony at Ivy League Brew in a Private Room located at 633 11th Ave SW, Alabaster Al 35007 (off Highway 119 about 5-10 minutes from the cemetery) to spend time with family. Helen Bjordal, daughter of the late Hans Bjordal and Elvira Bervin Bjordal, was born April 12, 1928 in Clay County, South Dakota. Preceded in death by her husband, of 71 years, Vernon E. Miller, and her parents, brother and sister-in-law Allan and Lorraine Bjordal, her brother Jon Bjordal of Centerville, SD. , sister and brother-in-law Dorrit and Warren Reeves, and sister and brother-in-law Marjie and Leonard Lindsey of Adel, GA. She is survived by her children: Richard and Juanita of Las Cruces, NM, Randy and Cindy Miller of Birmingham, AL, Joan Miller (Conrad Haden) of Austin, TX. , grandson, Benjamin Miller (Katy Fulton) of Muscatine, IA, brother, Ben Bjordal, sister-in-law, Diane Bjordal of Centerville, SD, numerous nephews, nieces, great nephews, great nieces, and several cousins in Norway and the United States. Helen was educated in the public schools of South Dakota through 1948, when she received her junior college degree from South Dakota State University at Brookings, SD. In 1948 she married Vernon Miller of Comfrey, MN. She lived in several different states where her husband worked as editor of small-town newspapers and she worked as a legal secretary. In 1955 they moved to Birmingham, AL where her husband was employed with Progressive Farmer magazine. Helen went back to school to get her bachelor's degree and Alabama teacher's certificate. She received her bachelor's degree from Samford University in 1967 and her master's degree in mathematics in 1972. She taught mathematics at John Carroll High School, Jefferson State Community College, and Samford University. She retired in 1994. Services are pending at this time but will be held at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 2 Xavier Circle, Birmingham, Alabama 35213. A memorial service will also be held at a later date in Centerville, South Dakota. Information will be provided at a later date.Show more
