Dorothy Lorene Pearson, age 87, passed away January 31, 2024 at Mountain City Care Center. Dorothy was born May 29, 1936 in Carter County, TN to the late Alvin and Minnie Hatley. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Pearson; daughter, Vanessa Potter; sister, Christine Payne; brothers, Wayne, Cliff, Carl, Brown, Lawrence, Hubert, and Burl Hatley. Dorothy was an avid reader and loved her family, especially her 3 grandsons. She was a member of Elk River Baptist Church and later attended Elk Mills Baptist Church. Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Tammy Potter and husband Steve, Helen McCoury and husband Tim, Judy Pearson; grandchildren, Adam McCoury, Bruce and Chase Potter; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 4, 2024 at Sugar Grove Baptist Church. The funeral will follow at 2 p.m. with Toby Rainbolt and Larry Pearson officiating. Gordon Coffey, age 57, passed away on Friday, February 9, 2024 at his home. He was born August 11, 1966 to Frank Coffey and Mona Taylor. Gordon was a simple man who was friendly and caring. He was a good husband and a loving dad and grandpa. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his grandkids. Gordon enjoyed the outdoors, particularly fishing, camping, and kayaking. He was a warrior, fighting cancer until the very end. In addition to his parents those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Tina Coffey; daughter, Tabatha Stines and husband Elijah; grandchildren, Brent, Wyatt, and Braylyn Stines; sisters, Melissa Wardrup and Amanda Coffey; brother, Jesse Coffey and wife Heather; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ben Harmon, Wendell Hicks and Leslie Hicks. Ned May, age 85, passed away on Friday, February 16, 2024 at his home. He was born November 12, 1938 to the late Ralph and Hassie May. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Thomas and Vivian Winters; and brothers, R.G. May and Edward May. Ned was a simple man who enjoyed being outdoors, especially fishing and rabbit hunting. He also enjoyed camping and throwing horse shoes. He loved playing with his grandkids and watching Carolina basketball. Ned enjoyed evenings playing Rook with his beloved family. He was a devoted member of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church where he was saved at the age of 9. Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of over 38 years, Anita May; daughter, Rachel Wall (Jody); son, Jeremy Moretz (Crystal); several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday, February 19, 2024 from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. Stella Denny Morefield, age 84, of 919 Medical Park Drive, passed away February 19, 2024. She was born April 8, 1939 to the late Eli and Lealer Denny. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bart Morefield; son, Jack Morefield; daughter, Cindy Taylor; grandchildren, Joseph Bart Morefield, Sheena Michelle Morefield; brothers, Jim, LD, Dub, Robert, Wayne and Delmer Denny; sisters, Della Bogus and Ellie Taylor. Despite her rough childhood, Stella was one of the most loving, kind and caring people you would ever meet. She adored her family and loved God. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Mountain City. Survivors include her son, Mike Morefield (Beulah) of Granite Falls, NC; daughter-in-law, Jean Morefield of Mountain City; son-in-law, Jim Taylor of Mountain City; brother, Cliff Denny of North Wilkesboro, NC; grandchildren, Jimmy Ray Taylor (Savannah), Billy Morefield (Diana), Michael Taylor (Misty), Michael Clay Morefield, David Taylor, Deirdre Morefield; great grandchildren, Natalyi Taylor, Emily Taylor, Daniel Taylor, Joseph Morefield (Tonya), Makayla Moody, Sophia Moody, Weston Ferguson, Sadie Ferguson, Kynlee Gentry; great great grandson, Jackson Morefield; several nieces and nephews. Harry Joseph Smith Jr. Harry Joseph Smith Jr. (Joe) died peacefully at the age of 72 on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Joe is survived by the love of his life and his wife of 40 years, Rose Rasmussen; his daughter and sunshine Hannah Smith (Tetsuro Namba); siblings Aaron Smith (Jean), Mitchell Smith, and Carolyn Younce; fifteen nieces and nephews, and many close friends, golfing buddies, and dedicated colleagues. He is preceded in death by his parents Betty (Horton) and Harry Joseph Smith Sr. of Mountain City, and brother-in-law George Younce. Joe was born on July 13, 1951, in Lenoir, NC, and lived with his family in North Carolina and California before moving to Laurel Bloomery as a teenager. He graduated from Johnson County High School in 1969, and graduated magna cum laude from East Tennessee State University in 1973. He earned his Juris Doctor (JD) Law Degree from Duke University in 1976. He was admitted to the Bar in Idaho, Tennessee, and the U.S. Federal Court. He practiced law in Mountain City, TN for 48 years, including a town attorney from 1982-1984 and on the board of Legal Services of Upper East Tennessee from 1982-1984. He was recognized many times as one of the top 150 attorneys in the state of Tennessee. He helped many clients access their disability benefits, not only in Mountain City but throughout the state and across the southeast. Joe was passionate about great food and great wine. He loved to travel and had visited over 60 countries. He deeply enjoyed golf and would play every chance he had- not only at Glenrochie Country Club, where he held his membership, but also at great golf courses around the United States. Everyone knew that he was incredibly smart and had a smart sense of humor, but he will be most remembered for his kindness and empathy that touched the lives of so many in our community. He will be missed by all especially his family. A memorial service for Joe will be held on Monday, March 18, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by several nieces and nephews, brothers, Arlis, Dean, Bob, Clay and Ottis and sisters, Elva Mae Stout, Virda Mae Stout and Patsy Eggers. Rod attended Rainbow Mennonite Church. He enjoyed busting wood, mowing and gardening. In addition to his brother, Bill Trivette and wife Rita of Mountain City, he is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Stephen Dale Capps passed peacefully at home with his wife by his side February 21, 2024. He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal Louise Brown Capps of North Carolina and baby son. Stephen retired from the United State Army in 1986. He and his wife, Patricia had many adventures together. Both worked for the State of North Carolina and decided to drive long haul OTR for TRL Trucking and WLA Trucking as team drivers. Stephen and Patricia were together for 21 years, filled with love and laughter.
