Louis Thompson

Louis Thompson

Age - 53

November 12, 2023

On Thursday, Nov 9 Lou passed away after a long battle with heart disease, diabetes and kidney failure. Lou has been such a bigger than life person that the loss is devastating for all who knew and loved him. Born in Orange, NJ, he grew up on the streets of Orange and the valley in West Orange where he would play football with his friends in front of Edison school or grab a sandwich at Chubbies or Jimmy Buffs. He worked, first with his dad, a local legend, doing body work on cars but as a teenager he worked at Star Tavern, Jimmy Buffs, Maplewood Country Club and a local Shell gas station. He was a Lieutenant on the Orange Auxiliary Fire Dept from 1987 to 1993, an American Red Cross Disaster Volunteer from 2001 to 2013, member and currently Deputy Chief of Jersey Coastal Emergency Services from 1985 to present and a Ham Radio Operator (KC2HNQ). His volunteering and helping others didn't stop when he became disabled as he used his love for scanners and radios to form several community alert groups on social media. Despite losing his left leg to his various medical issues, he became a "rolling thunder" riding in his electric wheelchair all over Netcong and Mt Olive. He never let the adversities he faced stop him from living. Whether fishing with his brothers and friends or hanging out in the local pizzeria shooting the breeze, Lou was outgoing and always willing to help another person. Lou loved life, he loved people but mostly he loved his family. Lou is survived by his loving wife, Shannon (nee Koch), daughter April, his brothers Ron and Dan, Aunt Rose Leonardo and Uncle Bob Gernert plus many cousins, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Frances (nee Yacavino) and Bob "Dino" Thompson. Lou's Life Celebration will be on Tuesday, November 14, 2023 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Rd. Chester, NJ 07930 with a Funeral Service at 8:00pm. Internment will be held privately by he family.
