Martha Nell Avans of Jacksonville, Alabama, passed away on December 4, 2023 after a 17 year battlewith Alzheimer's. Martha is predeceased by her husband Bennie "Judd" Avans, parents Alton andMargie Gulledge, brother Donald Gulledge, and grandson Will Seagraves. Martha is survived by daughterDonna Seagraves (Brian), twins Denis Avans and Denise Rosier (Steve), brother Alton "Buddy" Gulledge,(Virginia), sister-in-law Elouise Gulledge, grandchildren Erin Rosier, Caitlin Patrick (Conner), Drew Avans(Mychal), Cole Avans, Brooke Wilbanks (Parker) and great-grandchild Dax Avans. Martha grew up in the Ball Play Community on her parents' farm surrounded by extended family. Herparents were the proprietors of Gulledge Grocery, the hub of the community. Martha loved school andwas a good student. She skipped a grade in elementary school and was elected homecoming queen atHokes Bluff High School. After graduation, Martha attended Jacksonville Teacher's College (nowJacksonville State University) while working at the General Electric plant in Gadsden. Martha taughtEnglish, Typing, and Shorthand at Etowah and Hokes Bluff High Schools. While working as a teacher, Martha met Judd, the man who was to become her husband, the father ofher three children, and the love of her life. Martha and Judd made a life together working, farming, andraising their family. When the children were in elementary school, Martha went to work with theJacksonville Post Office and retired after 40 years. Martha was able to donate a kidney to her brotherDonald in 1968, giving him an additional 36 years with his family. Martha was also a 40-year breastcancer survivor. During their retirement, Martha and Judd spent much of their time at their belovedfarm in Ball Play, raising and selling cattle, gardening, fishing, visiting, and loafing. Martha would have liked to be remembered for her great love for her family, her work ethic, her wit,and her intellect. Although Alzheimer's robbed Martha of many of the memories that she shared withus, we cherish those memories and the enduring influence she has had on our lives and the lives ofothers. Special thanks to the many caregivers over the past six years, particularly to Rehab Select - Talladega and Affinity Hospice. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a. m. Funeral service for Charlotte Almaroad Bell, 74, of Jacksonville, Alabama, will be held at 1:00 p. m. on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory in Jacksonville. Reverend Ronny Moore, from West Point Baptist Church of Jacksonville, will officiate. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home. Charlotte passed away peacefully with her children by her side on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at her home. She is preceded in death by her parents, Houston and Ophelia Almaroad; her sister, Myra Deason; and her brother, Gregory Almaroad. Charlotte was a native of Jacksonville and a graduate of Jacksonville High School, class of 1967. She retired after 30 years of service with Allstate Insurance Company. She grew up as a member of West Point Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Ami Morris and her children, Chloe Venegoni and Jadon Morris; her son, Bartley Bell, and his children, Andrew Gibbs, Ashley Gibbs, Alexia Bell, and Zachary Bell; her brother, Jeff Almaroad; and several nieces and nephews. Joseph Clifton "J. C. " Holmes was born on January 11, 1934, and woke up in the presence of the Lord on November 13, 2023, at the age of 89. J. C. grew up in Alpine, AL, but was a resident of Jacksonville for most of his adult life. Mr. Holmes' greatest accomplishment was his family. He met the love of his life at Jacksonville State University in 1954 and won her over with his charm and quick wit. They were married on April 25, 1957. They created a beautiful life together and their 66-year marriage was filled with so much light and love. Though his family was his main priority, he was also a beloved serviceman, teacher, principal, counselor, and friend. He went through the ROTC program at JSU, and was stationed for two years at Ft. Campbell, KY. After leaving the service, J. C. and Millie brought their family back to Jacksonville and settled out in the Williams community. J. C. was a faithful member of FBC Williams for 58 years and served as an active deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Mr. Holmes was a retired educator, having spent 30 years teaching in Calhoun County. The last 18 years of his career were spent as the guidance counselor at the Calhoun County Career Academy where he influenced countless lives in a position that he greatly enjoyed serving students that he loved. J. C. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Millie Stevenson Holmes; children, Greg Holmes (Natalya) of Roanoke, VA, Phil Holmes (Leslie) of Jacksonville, and Ivye Holmes Hayes of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Ryan Holmes, Taylor Holmes (Melina), Holly Holmes, Joseph Holmes (Ralucca), Aleisha Holmes, Lindsey Holmes, Lisa Harris (Ethan), Madelyne Hayes Giamalva (Victor), Jonathan Holmes (Courtney), Hayley Holmes, Hunter Holmes, and Lucas Holmes; four great-grandchildren, Rachel Harris, William Harris, Rorie Holmes, and Lily Harris; a sister, Lois Haynes of Alpine, AL; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mildred Warlick Holmes, and brother-in-law, James Haynes. The family expresses gratitude for the tender love and care from Erin and all of the other Compassus Hospice staff who cared for him so well. Pallbearers will be J. C. 's grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of FBC Williams. J. C. was loved fiercely by all who knew him. When he wasn't sharing wisdom and advice, he was cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. He was as stubborn as they come and always the light of the party. He will be greatly missed. Oren Wyatt Babb was born July 19, 1942 in Birmingham, Alabama to Mabon Spruill Babb and Connie Wyatt Babb. He graduated from Phillips High School in 1959; graduated from the University of Alabama in 1963; and Vanderbilt University Medical School in 1967. Oren completed an internship at Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, LA and a residency in Diagnostic Radiology at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, TN. He served two years in the Public Health Service at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, MD. In 1973, Oren moved to Anniston, AL, with his wife Betsy and his two young sons, Rob and Russell. He was a partner with the Anniston Radiology Group for 27 years. Several months after Betsy died in 2004, Oren asked Pat Goodgame to go to dinner with him. Pat had known Betsy and Oren since 1973 and been in the same Sunday school class with the Babbs. In 2005, Pat and Oren married. After Oren retired he became active in the Anniston Kiwanis Club and enjoyed traveling. Oren and Pat moved permanently to their Birmingham condo in 2019, during the COVID pandemic. After the pandemic subsided, Oren had time to get reacquainted with friends from his high school and college days and enjoy many celebratory meals with family. In 2022, he was diagnosed with stage 4 Glioblastoma. For 15 months, Oren was treated by the wonderful neuro-oncology staff at UAB. He had the best care possible, managed by Dr Burton Nabors and Dr James Markert and their medical teams. Oren died peacefully at home on November 18, 2023 with Pat by his side. The family wants to thank his sitters Jackie Amos and Adrienne Stinson for their attentive care these last few months. Everyone who knew Oren can attest to his good spirit and keen mind. He was appreciated by many. As one friend said "Oren was not real tall in statue but he was a giant of a man". Oren is survived by his wife, Pat Babb; sons, Robert (Gloria) Babb and Russell (Janna) Babb; sister, Glenda Bailey; stepchildren, Chris Goodgame, Meg (Matt) Gilpin, and Jeffrey (Mary) Goodgame; grandchildren, Karlyn (Patrick) Hale, Wyatt and Elijah Babb, Ethan, Everett and Elana Babb, Madison (Seth Diamond) Goodgame, Nicholas Goodgame, and Emma and Lily Gilpin; great-grandchildren, Oren Hale and Wylie Diamond; and sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alden and Bruce Jacobus, Peggy and Clyde Giesenschlag and Rob and Nancy Foote. A graveside service will be held in Anniston, AL at Highland Cemetery on Sunday, November 26 at 2:00 PM. A memorial service and columbarium committal will be held at Vestavia Hills Methodist Church, 2061 Kentucky Avenue, Vestavia Hills, AL on Monday, November 27 at 11:00 AM. Services for Dr. Thomas Leyden Padgett, 93, will be at 2:30 p. m. , Sunday, November 19, 2023. at K. L. Brown Funeral Home in Jacksonville, AL, with visitation from 1:00 p. m. until service time. The Rev. Dr. Derek Staples and Pete Bernstein will be officiating. Music will be provided by Rev. and Mrs. Buster Taylor, Rev. and Mrs. Fred Taylor, and Rev. Bob White. K. L. Brown Funeral Home and Crematory will be in charge of the service. Survivors include his son, Gregory Keith Padgett and his wife, Rosa Lynn; two grandsons, Mark Christopher Padgett (Heather) and Steven Tyler Padgett; three great-grandsons, Mason Christopher, Matthew Warren, and Hayden Thomas; a sister-in-law, Dot Brown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Pallbearers will be Patrick Brown, Scott Brown, Charles Casey, Mike Douglas, Ben Patterson, Lee Patterson, and Donnie Wood. Dr. Padgett graduated from Calhoun County (Oxford) High School and Jacksonville State College and the University of Alabama. He taught band at White Plains High School, Munford High School, and Bibb County High School. He taught secondary methods and supervised student teachers for the University of Alabama while earning his Ed. S Degree and Ed. D Degree. In 1969 he came to Jacksonville State University as a professor in the College of Education. Before retiring in 1989 as head of Educational Resources he had earned the title of Full Professor. As a retiree, he was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus of Education. Dr. Padgett served as facilitator and chairman for school accreditations for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools throughout North Alabama. He was active in various levels of education for 54 years. Dr. Padgett was a life member of the JSU Alumni Association and served as president of the JSU Retirees Club for three terms. He was a former member of Phi Delta Kappa educational society and Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity. He was a member of the JSU band before it was named The Southerners. He was a member of First Baptist Church Jacksonville, where he served as a deacon, music minister, Sunday School teacher, and on various committees. He served on the Alabama Baptist State Convention's Five Year Strategic Planning Committee and many terms on the Board of Aid for Students in Church Related Vocations. Dr. Padgett was a former member and officer of the Jacksonville Exchange Club and of the Jacksonville Community Concert Board. He and his wife enjoyed traveling where he collected unique chess sets from all over the world. He enjoyed other hobbies as well, including painting, gardening, playing chess and bridge. Peggy Joyce Sawyer, age 90, passed away peacefully on October 26th. Peggy loved her family, friends, and community dearly. Peggy was born in Anniston and graduated from Anniston High School. Following graduation, she went to work at Anniston National Bank. She met her husband, Richard, and they married while he was stationed at Ft. McClellan. Peggy worked alongside Richard at their family business, Sawyers Pharmacy, where she greeted customers with her unmistakable Southern charm and genuine smile. Peggy was a member of Parker Memorial Baptist Church where she had treasured friendships and fond memories, especially Beach Bunch adventures. When not watching Alabama Football she could be found with tablet in hand playing Mahjong! Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, J. Richard Sawyer; her youngest son, Jonathan Kurt Sawyer; and her parents, E. B. and Mary Ellen Ledbetter. She is survived by a son, R. Mark Sawyer (Lorri); three grandchildren, Lauren Sawyer Weil (Drew), Samuel M. Sawyer, and John Mark Sawyer; two great-grandchildren, Campbell Weil and Sloane Weil; and nieces, nephews, and devoted cousins, Pat Cain Bennett, Stan (Lanita) Bennett, and Rick (Paula) Bennett. With heavy hearts and a deep sense of faith, we announce the passing of Allan Norman Norton, a beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, brother & friend. Allan, 65, passed away October 27, 2023 at Grandview Medical Center in Birmingham, AL. He was the husband of Christi Norton. They shared 40 blessed years of marriage together. Born in Gadsden, AL, Allan was the son of Norman Norton and Shirley Prater. He graduated Glencoe High School in 1976 and was very proud to be a 1973 Glencoe football State Champion. Allan founded G-N Compaction, LLC and worked tirelessly as the owner of his business for over 20 years. Allan was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. A few things he enjoyed to the fullest were his wife, children, grandchildren, riding his Harley, spending time around his acreage at home, enjoying his annual Farm Aid trip and "piddling. " Allan will always be remembered for his goofy personality, dad jokes & willingness to help any and everyone in need. He is survived by "his bride" Christi Norton, children; Sam Norton (Kali), Callie Gaither (Daniel), grandchildren; Anderson, Grady and Baby Norton #2, sister Tracy Klepsig, brother Zach Norton (Carrie), brother-in-law Scott Harris (Dawn) and a multitude of other family & friends. Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter, Gena Goodson (David) and son, John Smith (Shelia), along with grandchildren Kacie G. Shell (Jeremy), Korie G. Morrow (Mike), Jarred Smith (Bonnie), Courtenay Abernathy and Chris Green (Tonya) and two great-grandchildren Barrett Shell and Rylee Morrow. He is preceded in death by his loving wife; Geneva Amos Smith, his parents; Joe B. and Eunice Smith, his brother; Joe Smith and his four sisters; Emma Amos, Clara Belle Smith, Ruby Richardson and Marcella Brock. Frank Smith was a devoted man who dearly loved his family and his country. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for four years and was honored to do so. There are not enough words to describe what a kind man Mr. Smith was throughout his entire life. He will be greatly missed by those who loved him and are left to cherish his memory.
