November 22, 2023
Joseph Clifton "J. C. " Holmes was born on January 11, 1934, and woke up in the presence of the Lord on November 13, 2023, at the age of 89. J. C. grew up in Alpine, AL, but was a resident of Jacksonville for most of his adult life. Mr. Holmes' greatest accomplishment was his family. He met the love of his life at Jacksonville State University in 1954 and won her over with his charm and quick wit. They were married on April 25, 1957. They created a beautiful life together and their 66-year marriage was filled with so much light and love. Though his family was his main priority, he was also a beloved serviceman, teacher, principal, counselor, and friend. He went through the ROTC program at JSU, and was stationed for two years at Ft. Campbell, KY. After leaving the service, J. C. and Millie brought their family back to Jacksonville and settled out in the Williams community. J. C. was a faithful member of FBC Williams for 58 years and served as an active deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Mr. Holmes was a retired educator, having spent 30 years teaching in Calhoun County. The last 18 years of his career were spent as the guidance counselor at the Calhoun County Career Academy where he influenced countless lives in a position that he greatly enjoyed serving students that he loved. J. C. is survived by his wife of 66 years, Millie Stevenson Holmes; children, Greg Holmes (Natalya) of Roanoke, VA, Phil Holmes (Leslie) of Jacksonville, and Ivye Holmes Hayes of Jacksonville; grandchildren, Ryan Holmes, Taylor Holmes (Melina), Holly Holmes, Joseph Holmes (Ralucca), Aleisha Holmes, Lindsey Holmes, Lisa Harris (Ethan), Madelyne Hayes Giamalva (Victor), Jonathan Holmes (Courtney), Hayley Holmes, Hunter Holmes, and Lucas Holmes; four great-grandchildren, Rachel Harris, William Harris, Rorie Holmes, and Lily Harris; a sister, Lois Haynes of Alpine, AL; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Mildred Warlick Holmes, and brother-in-law, James Haynes. The family expresses gratitude for the tender love and care from Erin and all of the other Compassus Hospice staff who cared for him so well. Pallbearers will be J. C. 's grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of FBC Williams. J. C. was loved fiercely by all who knew him. When he wasn't sharing wisdom and advice, he was cracking jokes and making everyone laugh. He was as stubborn as they come and always the light of the party. He will be greatly missed. The funeral service for Mr. Holmes will be at 11:00 a. m. on Friday, November 17, 2023, at First Baptist Church of Williams in Jacksonville, AL. Reverend Ryan Linkous and his son, Reverend Phil Holmes, will officiate; and his granddaughter, Madelyne Giamalya, will share memories. Burial, with military honors, will follow at the church cemetery. The family will receive visitors from 5:00-7:00 p. m. on Thursday, November 16, 2023, at the church.
