Shirley Chapman Brighenti of Barkhamsted, CT passed away peacefully Tuewsday, August 29, 2023 at the age of 101. She was born June 15, 1922 in Williamstown, Vermont, daughter of Minard and Gladys Chapman. She married Robert J. Brighenti of Avon, CT on March 6, 1946. Shirley is survived by her son Robert (Audrey) Brighenti of Tequesta, FL, daughters, Cynthia Kulikowski and Corrine (Donald) Steeves of Torrington, CT and Deborah (Joseph) Keevers of Winsted, CT and her beloved sister, Barbara Aivaz of Plainville, CT. She was predeceased by her husband Robert, two sons, Roger and Richard and three brothers Minard, Robert and Richard Chapman. She is also survived by six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Shirley was known for her sense of humor and was the happiest when surrounded by family and friends. Her biggest joy was celebrating her 100th birthday with all the people she cared deeply for, and which remained a topic of her daily conversations. Shirley also enjoyed car rides and flower gardening. She was a diehard Red Sox fan and one of her greatest enjoyments was to watch or listen to one of their games. Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. We would like to thank all the help we received from family and friends. June 27, 1966 - December 1, 2023 Steven James Johnson, 57, of Farmington, formerly of Stamford, beloved husband of Ella M. Scafidi-Johnson, passed away unexpectedly on December 1, 2023. Steve was born on June 27, 1966, in Stamford, CT, to Donald Johnson and Catherine Mennona. He graduated J. M Wright Technical High School, 1984. Steve worked in Stamford at East Side Variety, his father's carpeting business, Harbor Deli, and Pitney Bowes Corporation as First Officer and Operations Manager. In 2001, Steve and Ella moved to Farmington where he began working at the University of Hartford. He held positions of Public Safety Officer, Field Training Officer, Quartermaster, Corporal, and Sergeant before changing career paths and joining the Lock Shop where he became a Certified Facilities Locksmith. While there, he pursued a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and privately studied Cyber Security. From 2015-17, Steve and Ella moved to Jupiter, FL where he worked for the U. S. Department of Homeland Security before returning to Farmington to continue his 20-year tenure at the University of Hartford. From 1980-94, he played Stamford Street Hockey, and Waterbury Dec Hockey where he was named Captain, winning multiple championships, scoring titles, and MVP awards on the Flyers. In 2007, he continued his passion for hockey on various Plainville Indoor Sports Arena teams. Steve also played Jai Alai and semi-professional tennis. He was an outstanding athlete. Steve enjoyed his traveling adventures. He looked forward to his yearly trips to Block Island with Ella. They most recently vacationed in Bermuda, Amsterdam, and Copenhagen. This year, Steve and Ella captured countless photos and memories seeing their favorite bands. His hobby was collecting Hess trucks and proudly shared his incredible display with family and friends. Steve was predeceased by his mother, Catherine, father, Donald, and uncle, Sonny. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Ella, and their dog Loki; his children, Steven and Taylor Johnson; two grandchildren, Emma and Eli; his stepson and daughter-in-law, Andrew and Courtney Ouellette; his mother-in-law Rina Scafidi, his brothers and sister-in-law, Donald, Jeffrey and April Johnson, and his aunt Mary Ann Carson. Steve was fiercely loyal, had a keen mind, a hardworking nature, and a great sense of humor. He will be remembered for his boisterous laugh and kind heart. A public memorial will be held Sunday, December 17, 2023, 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Plainville Indoor Sports Arena, 161 Woodford Avenue in Plainville, to celebrate Steve's life. Kaplan--A memorial celebration will be held from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM on Friday, December 8, 2023 at Vincent Funeral Home - Kaplan honoring the life of Michael E. Lamarre, 67, who died Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Ochsner Abrom Kaplan Memorial Hospital. Dusty Durbin will lead prayers in Michael's honor at the close of the celebration. Michael was a dedicated 10-year member of the American Legion. His unwavering commitment to service and his genuine passion for community involvement left a mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He became an integral part of the American Legion family shortly after transferring to Kaplan several years ago. His journey of service began when he took on a role on the executive board. With time, his commitment to the American Legion deepened, and he rose to the esteemed position of 2nd Vice Commander, a role in which he exhibited leadership and selflessness. His impact further extended as he took on the responsibility of Post Manager, dedicating five years to ensuring the smooth operation and success of the post. A man of many talents, he also assumed the role of Post Bingo Chairman for three years, bringing joy and camaraderie to all who participated. His commitment to the Legion extended beyond specific roles, as he contributed his time and expertise to various post committees including post maintenance, house rentals, and bar operations. Michael's warm smile, tireless work ethic, and genuine care for the well-being of others have left an indelible mark on the American Legion and our community. He will be remembered for his service and dedication to the principles of the Legion, and the positive impact he made on the lives of those around him. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Pam Lamarre of Kaplan; three daughters, Brenda Hebert and her significant other, Riley Landry of Kaplan, Jennifer Sparks of Semmes, AL and Samantha Mallett of Kaplan; nine grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; one brother, David Lamarre and his wife, Charlene; and two sisters, Catherine Lamarre and Elizabeth Lamarre. Melinda J. Lazor, 79, of Simsbury, CT, wife of the late Stephan Peter Lazor, died Sunday, November 19, 2023 at her home. She was born May 10, 1944 in Marion County, IN, daughter of the late Maxwell Allis and Sarah Elizabeth (Burks) Johnson. Melinda was raised in Tulsa, OK and lived in Simsbury for the last 35 years. She attended Beloit College in Beloit, WI, where she met her late husband. She received her undergraduate degree from UConn and then went on to earn a Masters Degree in English from Trinity College. Melinda had a lifelong love of learning taking classes at the University of Hartford in English, art, history, and music up until her passing. She also enjoyed gardening and reading as well as creative and spiritual writing, with works published in the Upper Room. Melinda was a pioneering career executive and enjoyed a 36-year career in the Insurance industry working for Aetna and The Hartford. In her younger years, she was also an avid horseback rider, competing in cross country and dressage events. She also loved to travel to visit friends and family or for the sheer enjoyment of it. Melinda had traveled all over the US, to England and Scotland, and many places in the Caribbean. Jamaica and Ambergris Caye, Belize both held very, special places in her heart. Melinda was an active and dedicated Member of the Simsbury United Methodist Church. Through the church she became both a Stephen's Minister and Friendly Visitor as well as devoting time to the Susanna Circle, Women's Bible Study and various charities and outreach. Melinda had a life long passion for classical music, played the flute and was a member of the Farmington Valley Choral and Intonations chorus group. She is survived by her children, Melinda Grunert and husband Paul of Enfield, CT, Amy Rintoul of Otis, MA and Peter Lazor and wife Rebecca of Ambler, PA; her sisters Sara Hein of Milwaukee, WI, and Hannah Meredith of Lake Oswego, OR, her grandchildren, Seth and Taylore Grunert, Stefan Rintoul and Graysen, Nash, and Wyatt Lazor. She was predeceased by two grandsons, Zachary Joseph Grunert and Calum James Rintoul. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 16, 2023 at the Simsbury United Methodist Church, 799 Hopmeadow St. in Simsbury. Christopher Winsor of North Canton, Connecticut, died on November 8, 2023 at the age of 92. He leaves Helen, his wife of 66 years, their children Jeffrey (Elizabeth Corkum Winsor), Christopher (Catherine Freud Winsor), Deborah (Lauren Tellier), and grandchildren David, Katherine, Madeleine, Cole, and Derek. He loved them and will miss them. Chris is survived by his younger sisters Jessie W. Tramutolo and Mary (Polly) Winsor and was predeceased by his older brothers Paul III and Malcolm. Chris was born March 22, 1931, the son of Paul Jr. and Marion Joyce Winsor. He grew up in Towaco NJ, Rowayton, CT, and Cohasset MA, and graduated from Rhode Island School of Design in 1954. For 20 years he worked as a registered architect with leading firms in Hartford, contributing to projects such as Constitution Plaza and the Wadsworth Atheneum. His professional expertise was specifications and building codes; he served on both the Hartford and Connecticut State Building Code Revision Committees, as well as, the Town of Canton Code Adoption Committee. He was a charter member and past president of the Construction Specifications Institute, Hartford Chapter. He also served on committees of the American Society of Testing Material. His later career was with CIGNA as a Vice President heading up the Real Estate Investment Engineering unit, retiring in 1988. Chris firmly believed in the importance of giving back to his country and the community. In college he enlisted with the Air National Guard, and in 1954 joined the Connecticut Air National Guard. Chris was selected to be the first commander of the 103rd Civil Engineering Flight group and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1984. He was a member of the National Ski Patrol for 28 years at Ski Sundown, a 10-year member of the North Canton Volunteer Fire Department, and for 34 years a member and longtime Chair of the Canton Zoning Commission. None of Chris professional achievements and community activities would have been possible without the support and encouragement of his family. Chris and Helen married in 1957, and subsequently purchased the woods and pastureland in North Canton where he designed and built the contemporary house that has been their home ever since. Chris thoroughly enjoyed the brush clearing and trail work and in later years they donated those woods and trails to the Canton Land Trust, now known as Winsor Woods. In his retirement years, Chris was able to split his time between North Canton and his house in Wellfleet (Cape Cod), a town where as a child his family spent many summers. A Celebration of Life will be held at Abigail's restaurant in Simsbury, CT on Monday, December 4, from 1 to 4 p. m. Blair David Elliott, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 at age 73. Born on September 26, 1950 to the late Robert M. and Beverley (Gauvain) Elliott. Blair was the third of four children and a lifelong resident of Simsbury, CT. He was predeceased by his parents and older brother, Robert M. Elliott Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Karen (Burdick) Elliott; daughter Jennifer Berry and her husband Jason of Simsbury; daughter Amy Elliott of Gilbert, AZ; grandsons Shane and Jake Peatfield of Granby, CT; brother Bruce Elliott and wife Susan of Simsbury; sister Faye Tomasello and husband Mark of Simsbury; sister-in-law Catherine Mattheis and husband Bernd (Ben) of Cheshire, CT; nieces and nephews Lauren Lett, Marcy Rockett, Robert Tomasello, Allison Mattheis-Wong, Erik Mattheis, and Geoffrey Mattheis. Blair grew up in the center of town; playing pick-up baseball and adventures in the woods with his brothers, cousins, and neighborhood friends. He graduated from Simsbury High School and later met Karen while they worked at a local store called Grant's. The two were married five months later and started their life together in town. They welcomed their two daughters and flourished as a young family. Blair's job then moved them to Austin, TX for five years. After returning to Simsbury, Blair and his family settled on Terry's Plain Road. Blair was known for his amazing vinyl record collection and extensive assortment of baseball hats. He always had a special place in his heart for his beloved dog, Brandy. Blair also loved spending time outdoors, whether tending to his garden, taking care of his lawn or fishing with his brother. He and Karen were avid bowlers, loved traveling to new places, and enjoyed eating out together. Blair will always be remembered for his laughter and light hearted spirit. Blair was a hard worker who never stopped. He had a variety of jobs throughout his career; and especially enjoyed his time working at Malcolm Black in Weatogue. He worked for years at Ensign Bickford, and ended his career with Town Fair Tire. A graveside committal service will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, November 29, 2023 at Simsbury Cemetery, 16 Plank Hill Road in Simsbury with a reception to follow. His family will always be grateful for the compassionate care Blair received at The Suffield House nursing home over the last year of his life.
