Barbara Steffe

Age - 91

Barbara Tatem Steffe, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 24, 2023. Born in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Virginia Breeding Tatem and Eugene Carlisle Tatem. She grew up in the Chesterfield neighborhood of Norfolk and lived in Norfolk and Virginia Beach her entire life. Barbara graduated from Goucher College, in Baltimore, Maryland with a degree in Education. Her sister, Jean, was in Pharmacy School at the University of Maryland at the same time and she introduced Barbara to one of her classmates, Wilson Steffe. The two fell in love and soon after graduation Barbara and Wilson were wed. Barbara taught elementary school in Norfolk and Virgnia Beach with most of her years in kindergarten at Sunnybrook Day School. Four of her grandsons attended Sunnybrook for preschool and kindergarten and it holds a special place in her family's heart. Barbara was in the classroom for over 50 years. For many years, Barbara was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Norfolk, but later transferred to Lynnhaven United Methodist Church to worship with her daughter's family. She and Wilson lovingly adopted and cared for one of the church's gardens. They were also very supportive of the children's and youth ministries. Barbara loved handwork - especially sewing, knitting, embroidery and needlepoint. Many of her creations will continue to be enjoyed into the future. She was also in her element when hosting family gatherings where chicken pot pie and cinnamon cake were among her most famed dishes. Grandchildren swear by her signature breakfast of eggs, bacon and toast. Her scrambled eggs cannot be replicated. There was something special about that cast iron skillet!Teaching and nurturing young children were important to Barbara, but it was her immediate and extended family that had the greatest meaning. She and Wilson attended ball games, chorus concerts, band competitions and Scouting activities to support their family near and far. In very unassuming ways, she and Wilson helped cart grandchildren here and there, run errands for busy children and provide meals for those who needed an extra hand. Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Jack Steffe (LeeAnne), Susan Krudop (Don) and Mary Virginia Hays (Tim); six grandchildren, Jan Coerper (Jeremy), Will Steffe, Kemper Steffe, Carl Enos, James Krudop, Marc Krudop (Carley); one step grandson, Riggs Hays; three great grandchildren, Rose Coerper, Dylan Coerper and Eli Enos as well as several nieces and nephews.
