Raised in Augusta, Flossie accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age under a spiritually filled household. Flossie attended Brinkley Academy where she enjoyed business studies and played basketball on her high school team. After graduating from Brinkley Academy, Flossie attended business school and was the first African American woman to work in the Arkansas Woodruff County Court House in the late 40s. Flossie was courted by her high school sweetheart, Floyd Akins and they married in Memphis, Tennessee on July 28th, 1948, and moved to Chicago, where they resided in Englewood at 6060 Layfette and attended Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church under Rev. Lewis Rawls. After Flossie and Floyd saw Lorraine Hansberry's "A Raisin in the Sun," where the community of Morgan Park was referenced, they moved there to start a new life with their family of four children. The Akins Family were fortunate to live next door to Rev. Richard and June Keller, and their sons Richard, Jr. and Edward and found an immediate church home at the Mother Church of Morgan Park, Beth Eden Baptist Church, where Flossie has been a member for more than 60 years. Flossie until only a few years ago was a member of the Beth Eden Sanctuary Choir where she was once president, sang soprano and occasionally would sing a solo as well featuring her favorite song" Today.
