Clara Juanita Nettles was called home to her heavenly father Tuesday November 28, 2023 peacefully in her home. She was the youngest daugther of ten childern born to Frank and Leila Johnson. Clara was born April 9, 1953 in Lackey, Virginia. She worked years as a custodian, retiring from York County school divison. She leaves a huge hole in the heart of family and friends. Clara was viewed as the matriarch of our family, who cared and provided for many family members and friends. Her kids was her everything, she would always say if you seen me I always had my kids. Those who knew Clara would testify her love of "Bingo" and getting her nails done (Burgundy polish). She was one of the best cooks and everyone loved her "Devil Eggs. " Clara was proceeded in death by parents Lelia and Frank Johnson, brothers Alonzo Johnson, Odell Johnson, and Willie Johnson; sisters Ethel Ann and Geneva Johnson, son Marco "Black" Johnson and grandson Micheal Manago. She leaves to cherish her memories one sister Lelia-Mae Johnson of Newport News, Frank Johnson of Newport News, Erenst Johnson (Cassandre) of Yorktown, four dauthers Denise Johnson of Hampton, Melinda Davis (Byron) North Carolina, Eugenia Nettles Newport News, Lavetra Channel (Rashaun)Hampton , 14 beautiful grandchildren KarKeash Taylor of West Virginia, Shawnta Eley Charlotte, Marco Lee Johnson Jr. , Marco M. L. Johnson, Shakyrrha Johnson all of Newport News, and Jason Johnson South Carolina, Malik Davis and Kawone Kemper of North Carolina, Jayla Nettles, Evan Freguson, and Kendra Wooten all of Newport, and Kaia and Josiah Channel of Hampton. 17 great-grandchildren; beloved nieces and nephews will cherish her memories; other family members and a host of friends. Clara Challenger

Age - 90

Clara Challenger was born on November 20, 1933 in the Phoebus section of Hampton. She graduated from Phoenix High School and was the beloved wife of Alvin R. Challenger, Sr. who passed away in 1998. Clara was also predeceased by a son, Alvin R. Challenger, Jr. , two brothers, Woodrow and Rupert Sargent, and daughter-in-law, Towanda Challenger. Left to mourn are her children Deborah and Timothy Challenger and Grandchildren: Derek and Zoe Challenger. Clara is also survived by nephews, nieces and cousins. Clara was a loving mother and grandmother who resided for decades in Aberdeen Gardens. Mom enjoyed shopping, cooking and watching Family Feud. Mom was happiest spending time with her children and grandchildren, especially while taking road trips. Clara transitioned on November 24, 2023, shortly after reaching her 90th birthday. She will be missed immensely by her family, friends, and neighbors. Douglas Dickinson Sr

Douglas Stephen Dickinson Sr. passed away on November 21, 2023. His son Steve was by his side. He was 73. He is survived by his son, Douglas Stephen Dickinson Jr. (Cheryl), from Warrenton, VA, by his brothers Dennis S. Dickinson (Nancy) of Vienna, VA and Thomas S. Dickinson (Deborah) of Gloucester, VA and by his former wife, Sharon Bryant (Richard), mother of Steve, from Newport News, VA. Born in Newport News, VA on December 25, 1949 to Shirley C. Dickinson Jr. and Kathleen Sheehan Dickinson, Douglas attended Hampton Public Schools until he transferred to Newport News High School in the mid 60's. At Newport News, he excelled as a member of the varsity football team and the track and field team. He was the state track and field champion in 29 events in his high school career and set numerous VHSL state championship records. At one time he held the National Scholastic Triple Jump Record. He attended Penn State University on a full athletic scholarship and led the freshmen team to an undefeated record. An injury to his foot, that occurred during a triple jump competition, brought his athletic career to an unexpected end. Douglas coached track and field at Menchville High School and at Christopher Newport College where he was named coach-of-the-year twice in the Dixie Conference (1978 and 1979). In 2004, Douglas was named as the number 5 top athlete in the Daily Press Top 100 Athletes. He was inducted into the Peninsula Sports Club Hall of Fame and into other halls of fame within the state. After leaving Penn State, Douglas worked in the shipyard in Newport News until he was disabled by a very rare vascular disease. After years being treated for the disease, it went into partial remission. In addition to coaching he worked as a car salesman, an insurance agent and finally became a local chef working at several different locations in Newport News and Hampton until medical issues caused him to retire. Douglas was humble, viewing his athletic career as past history, and stating that he was a better chef than he was an athlete and coach. He did everything at full speed and did not stop until the task was complete. He will be dearly missed by friends and family. In keeping with Douglas' wishes, no services will be held on his behalf. The family suggests that those wishing to make a remembrance to Douglas do so by donating to their favorite charity. Norman Smith

On November 22, 2023 the trumpets sounded and God called his name, he did not hesitate, he answered and took flight. Norman Agustus Smith, Sr. was born on October 11, 1941 in Washington, DC to the late Charlotte and Otha Smith, Sr. At a very early age his parents relocated to Eastville, VA where he grew up and was educated by the Northampton County Public School System. In 1960 he graduated from Northampton County High School. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the United States Army, serving two years active duty and four years reserves. He was Honorably Discharged with the rank of E4 and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. You would have thought he was a "Drill Sergeant" with all the orders he spouted. He moved to New York City where he met and married his lovely wife, Beverly James and this union was blessed with three sons. He was employed by Enterprise Press, from which he retired after many years of service. Upon relocating to Newport News, VA he and his wife joined Living Waters Christian Fellowship and later Restoration Christian Church-VA where he was lovingly called "Pop Norm". He truly loved his church family and was so proud of being the oldest male member of the church. Norman loved watching all sports. He was the coach/manager of a Paddle Ball Team for over ten years; traveling to St Thomas for a tournament yearly. He loved watching old western movies but his passion was being the aquatics aerobics instructor at the YMCA every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. All of his classmates at the YMCA became his extended family. Norman was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Joan Maxine Gore. He leaves to cherish his most precious memory, his wife of 56 years, Beverly Smith; three sons, Norman Smith, Jr. (Coral), Corey Smith (Nicole) and Brandon Smith; one aunt, Frances Hutchinson; one sister, Joyce Rivera; one brother, Otha Smith, Jr. ; one sister-in-law, Carol Mirelez-Monk (George); eleven grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family.
