Shawn M. Thomas, 55, of Hubbard, OH, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 3, 2023. Shawn was born on January 2, 1968, in Farrell, a son of John F. and Roberta (Vassen) Thomas. A lifelong area resident, he was a 1986 graduate of Sharon High School. He worked in various mills throughout the Valley. He was currently employed by Extreme Machine and Fab, Hermitage. Shawn was a loving husband, son and brother who enjoyed his family and caring for his animals. He was also a fan of NASCAR and loved attending races. He is survived by his wife, the former Carol McElhaney, whom he married on April 3, 1998; his parents; a brother, Eric J. Thomas, all of Sharon; a niece, Katelynn N. Thomas; and several cousins. Dorothy (Dottie) Malovich, nee Yohman, 95, died Dec. 2, 2023, surrounded by family members at Saint John XXIII Home in Hermitage, Pa. Dorothy was born May 29, 1928, in Hubbard, Ohio, and attended Hubbard schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Malovich, who died on June 3, 1992. They were married on Nov. 12, 1949, at Sacred Heart Church, Sharon, Pa. Her ten siblings also preceded her in death, as well as her parents, Michael Yohman and Anna Palisin Yohman. She is survived by three children - Angela Malovich Castro lives with her husband, Alejandro Castro, in Richmond, Ky. Carol Malovich Buchanan lives with her husband, Donald Buchanan, in Sharon. Joseph Malovich lives with his wife, Denise, in Sharpsville. Other survivors include grandchildren, Sean Buchanan, Kent, Ohio; Samantha Castro, Lexington, Ky. ; Joseph Tyler Malovich, Warren, Pa. ; Megan Buchanan White, Chaska, Minn. ; and Nathan Malovich, Sharon. Dorothy is also survived by five great-grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. Dorothy loved spending time with her family and was amazing at remembering birthdays and anniversaries. She never forgot to send greeting cards for all occasions, even those for her great-grandchildren. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren were able to say goodbye to her in recent weeks. Dorothy made her home in Hermitage since 1959, where she lived independently until September. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, weekly euchre card clubs, bingo, games with friends and family, cruises, travel to visit family, and bus trips to casinos. She enjoyed road trips and vacations with her husband. In her later years, she became an avid Pittsburgh sports team fan, but if the Pirates started sinking, she would switch to the Cleveland Indians. For the past few years, Dorothy liked using her computer to shop, play games, and keep up with her family members on Facebook. Her first job was at 16 at the Isaly's store on East State Street in downtown Sharon. She retired from J. C. Penney's in Hermitage after 22 years. She remained loyal to the store, taking children and grandchildren on many shopping excursions to the store after she retired. In memoriam, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Obituary Heflin Willingham, 89, of Hubbard, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 14, 2023. He was born January 8, 1934, in Hissop, Alabama to the late Robert and Biddie Leonard Willingham. While in Alabama he gave his life to Christ and was baptized. He moved to Youngstown, Ohio where he graduated from The Rayen School in 1955. He was a member of Holy Temple Church of God in Christ when he met the late Earma Bell at a church function. They were married in 1956, and from that union one daughter was born, Michele. He served his country with the rank of Specialist E4 Medic in the U. S. Army. Brother Willingham and his wife joined Phillips Chapel Church of God in Christ, in Hubbard, Ohio where he served as a Deacon. He was instrumental in the construction of the new church building. He served as an usher, worked the control room for the radio broadcast, and was a mentor to many. He was well known as the Sunday School Superintendent, representing the church at District, State, and National (UNAC) Sunday School meetings. He loved to read, learn and teach. Always using his tag line "You Understand". Deacon Willingham went on to support the startup of Bibleland Church of God in Christ in Hubbard, Ohio where he taught Sunday School and also assisted with the construction of that new church building. To assist his brother-in law, he and his wife started attending Community Lighthouse Church in Alliance, Ohio. He was employed at General Motors for 30 years. Heflin was very active in the Hubbard community. He was a member and President of the Maplewood Park Community Club. He was a member of the Regional Council of Government, receiving an award from the State of Ohio in 2006 for improving the community. He worked with the Trumbull County Planning Commissioners and Township Trustees to secure grants. He planned and organized the yearly community picnic. He and his wife donated land for the Maplewood Park. Heflin loved to work with his hands. He built picnic tables, and remodeled houses. He enjoyed vacationing/cruising with his family. Deacon Willingham leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Michele Willingham; brother, John (Mary) Willingham; the Bell Family; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Earma Willingham; his parents; his brothers, Orsby Willingham and Homer Willingham; and sister, Lorine Harris. Roberta "Bobbie" G. Sprague, of Hubbard, Ohio, entered eternal rest on Saturday, August 12, 2023, while a patient at the O’Brien Memorial Health Care Center, Masury, Ohio, following an extended illness. She was 83. Roberta was born on February 29, 1940, in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter to Leo E. & Hilda M. (Hansen) Sprague. Bobbie worked as a mechanic for General Electric. She dedicated 39 years of service to the company, prior to retiring in 2000. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Hubbard; Vienna Fish & Game Club; Past President of the former Masury VFW Post #8860; Past President of the Hubbard VFW Post #3767; Volunteer for the Ladies shooting classes at Vienna Fish & Game; and she was a certified NRA Concealed Carry Instructor. In her spare time, she enjoyed a 20-year bowling hobby and traveling. She loved her trips to Texas, California, Florida, Thailand, and England. In addition, she was an avid Cleveland Browns fan. Sister Dorothy Zwick, H. M. , formerly Sr. Mary Zita, 95, of Hubbard, Ohio, died May 9, 2023, at Maplecrest Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Care. Originally from Canton, she graduated from Mt. Marie Academy in 1945 and entered the Sisters of the Humility of Mary in 1946 from St. Joseph Parish. She professed her perpetual vows in 1948. Sr. Dorothy dedicated her decades of faith-filled service to ministering in healthcare, administration, and congregational leadership in the Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Youngstown dioceses. She earned her diploma from the St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a nurse at the Rose-Mary Center in Euclid and as a nursing supervisor at St. Joseph Hospital in Lorain before returning to the Youngstown area. Sr. Dorothy served as Director of St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing from 1961-1989 and helped train generations of nurses in her time there. She generously served four terms in HM Congregational Leadership as General Secretary, and served as Administrator of Villa Maria Community Center from 1989-2002. She began a rewarding ministry in pastoral ministry at St. Patrick Parish in Youngstown in 2002, where she served until 2020. Sr. Dorothy joined her sisters as part of the HM prayer ministry until her death. The daughter of the late Roman and Clara (Donant) Zwick and sister of the late Eulalia Heck, Zita Zwick, and Ruth C. Wirtz, she is survived by a number of nieces and nephews and their families, and her sisters in the Humility of Mary Congregation with whom she shared her life for 77 years. Irvine William Phillips, Jr. , of Hubbard, Ohio, unexpectantly passed away at home on Thursday, February 16, 2023, from natural causes. He was 44. Irvine was born August 11, 1978, in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a son to Irvine William Phillips, Sr. & Nettie E. (Custer) Phillips. He graduated in 1998 from Brookfield High School and also attended TCTC, where he studied Hotel, Motel, and Hospitality. He was a member of the Central Christian Church and had worked at Industrial Air Control Inc. , both in Hubbard. In his spare time, Irvine was known as a "Hulk-a-Maniac", being a big fan of the WWF and WWE. It goes without saying that his favorite wrestler was Hulk Hogan. He followed the Hulk and the sport religiously. He knew all the wrestlers' names, moves, stats, etc. In addition, he was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He also loved Elvis Presley. Irvine was a good man who will be truly missed. Survivors include: his wife, Jessica Lee (Cain) Phillips, whom he married July 21, 2005; his step-daughter, Elizabeth Desirae Ayers, of Sharon; his special grandson, George Rhett Shields; his siblings, William R. (Elizabeth) Custer, of Masury, Ohio, James I. (Annamarie) Phillips, of Hermitage, Pennsylvania, and Shirley J. (Matthew) Christy, of Hubbard; and his many nieces and nephews, as well as great ones too. Scott Alan Sherman, of Hubbard, OH passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 26, 2022 in his home. He was 62. Scott was born on December 22, 1959, in Sharon, to Freida L. (Hahn) McMath and Albert H. Sherman. He attended Hickory High School, Hermitage. A welder by trade, he worked for several local mills and manufacturing companies as well as the former Sharon Steel Corp. Sharon. Scott was of Protestant faith and was also an active member of the Sharon American Legion, Sharon Elks Club #103, and Hubbard Sportsman Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed collecting guns and spending time with his beloved dog, Leo. Scott is survived by his son, Nathan S. Sherman of Sharpsville. His mother, Freida McMath of Hubbard, sisters, Stacey (Charles) Emery of Austintown and Gail (Robert) Voyda of Burghill, brothers, Shawn (Regina) Sherman of Sharpsville, and Charles D. Geraldine "Gerrie" Ann Padovich, of Hubbard, Ohio, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, November 15, 2022, after fighting a courageous battle with cancer. She was 73. Geraldine was born on May 14, 1949, at home in Marianna, Pennsylvania, a daughter to William D. & Inez (Kepen) Duffield. She graduated in 1967 from Bethlehem-Center High School, Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, and furthered her education at Penn Commercial Business College in Washington, Pennsylvania. She landed a position with Kmart, where she worked her way up to manager. Gerrie retired in 2012 after dedicating 30 plus years to the company. A longtime member of the Youngstown Cookie Club, she enjoyed cooking and baking. She loved bringing people together to savor her food. She cherished entertaining guests and decorating her home. She truly had a gift. In addition, she valued going shopping and out to eat with her friends. She leaves behind: her husband, George T. Padovich, whom she married April 22, 1972; daughter, Gina (Shawn) Kief, Washington, Pennsylvania; 2 granddaughters, Sarah & Madison; brother-in-law, Robert Rhome, Sr. ; sisters-in-law, Charlotte Duffield, Phyllis Duffield, Patricia Padovich, & Karen Kotick; as well as brother & sister-in-law, Sean & Joann McGuiness.
