Merlin Smith

Merlin Smith

Age - 5

November 22, 2023

Merlin Smith was born in San Diego, California, to Arthur and Lolita Smith on August 8, 1928. His father was in the U. S. Navy; his mother was a homemaker. Merlin was the older of two children. He spent a lot of his formative years being raised by his Grandmother Watson in Caldwell, Idaho, and later traveling and working with Grandfather Jesse Watson, building Albertson's grocery stores. Merlin had to do his studies while they traveled. He enlisted in the Navy at the end of World War II. After being injured in a flying accident and spending a lot of time in hospitals back East, Merlin attended the University of Idaho. While at a church youth gathering in 1948, playing pool one day at a Methodist and Presbyterian Church gathering, he met another student, Irene Horning. After dating for about two years, they were married June 7, 1951. They honeymooned that summer on a remote Forest Service fire lookout tower. Irene surprised Merlin (and his coworkers) by bringing a stove-heated cast iron and curtains to the remote location. Merlin also shortly found out that her passion for flowers meant he would be hand carrying water 1. 5 miles uphill to the lookout tower every day for her flower garden. They turned out to be an ideal match and shared a lifetime love of flowers and are still known locally for their rhododendrons. After the summer at the lookout tower, they moved back to Moscow, Idaho, to complete their educations. Irene finished first and taught students at Troy and Dery High Schools, while Merlin finished his degrees in Forest Management and Business. After college, they moved to Emmet, Idaho, which was the first of many moves while Merlin worked for a Boise company selling lumber and the U. S. Forest Service. In addition to being a forester, he was a forest fire fighter and led inmate firefighting teams. After several moves, Irene put her foot down and told Merlin no more moves. So, Olympia became their home from 1964 until today. Merlin joined a newly formed organization called the Department of Natural Resources and extensively traveled the state. Later he transferred to the Department of Commerce as the Industrial Development Specialist. Because of his forest and state knowledge, he was selected to serve on the Forest Practices Board, Energy Facilities Site Evaluation Committee, Governor's Wilderness Area Task Force, and Governor's Hardwood Commission. He served the Hardwood Commission until he finally requested the Governor find a replacement when he turned 80. After his retirement in 1983, Merlin started a business to provide dried hardwood to a North Carolina furniture factory. But he was better known for his 60 years of individual and civic community service. For as long as anyone can remember, he supported elderly folks for decades, ensuring they had food, shelter, and medical care, as well as a friend whenever they needed it. Merlin was also active in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4H programs, and a range of other philanthropic programs and activities. In particular, Merlin actively supported the Scottish Rite's speech therapy work and a program that discretely provided shoes for children and young adults that could not afford them. Merlin was a dedicated Mason, served as Master of his Lodge, Harmony #18, and was later coroneted as a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He particularly felt he was making a difference as the President of the state-wide college Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation, which he led for over 20 years and stayed active supporting well into his 90s. When Merlin and Irene traveled the country, visiting family and friends, Irene would sit in the back seat of their car with her feet up, hand sewing, writing letters, and navigating. Merlin recalls that Irene insisted on stopping to see every unique attraction advertised along their route, regardless of how iffy the road was for the excursion. Secretly, Merlin did not mind those excursions as there was something new to share with Irene and laugh about every day. Merlin loved her dearly. Merlin also loved his family, and lived an honest, sincere, religious, and faithful life that valued everyone he met and helped those in need that had no one else. Merlin passed away on November 14, 2023. He is survived by his four children, Kevin, Karen, Kendra, and Kyle; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. The Celebration of Life for Merlin Smith will be held at 11:00 a. m. on December 9, 2023, at South Sound Mannor, 455 North Street SE, Tumwater, WA 98501. Per Merlin's wishes, in lieu of flowers, please provide a donation to the Scottish Rite Scholarship Foundation at .Show more

Bill was born to Herbert and Edith Sandell of Rochester, Washington. " Bill went on to attend Rochester High School, where he was always active in school activities and leadership and even spent time as one of the school's sports broadcasters. It was also here that his fancy footwork on the dancefloor and tenacity won over his high school sweetheart, JoAnne Keesee. They graduated in 1958 and were married later that same year. At age 17, Bill joined the Army Reserves and continued serving for eight years. After getting married, they wasted no time starting a family and Bill wasted no time starting his career. Obtaining a job at Boeing right out of high school, he spent over 42 years in the Space and Defense Group and retired in 2000. One of these was the Lunar Rover Vehicle program, where he helped the astronauts of Apollos 15, 16, and 17 explore the moon in the "Moon Buggy. " After his time at Boeing, Bill traded in his pocket protector for a set of golf clubs and embarked on his second career--retirement. This career saw many highlights. Bill and JoAnne became world travelers, seeing many countries, including Finland, where he was able to meet some extended family and even tour the house his father grew up in. They visited all 50 states and have the refrigerator magnets to prove it. Bill had many hobbies; golf, fishing, photography, camping, and metal detecting are just a short list of what he enjoyed. What he really enjoyed was family. That was the essence of his time and support. Whether it be a family gathering , a grandchild's graduation or a great-grandchild's football game, he was always there and will remain there in our hearts. Donald Hayward

Donald Hayward

Age - 97

June 7, 2023

Donald J. "Don" Hayward passed away on June 4, 2023, at Olympics West Assisted Living Facility in Tumwater, Washington. Don was born on December 28, 1926, in Wenatchee, Washington. He spent his early years living in the original Crescent Bar near Quincy and he attended grade school in Trinidad. The family moved to Moses Lake in 1940. Don of course had no idea that in 1944 before his 18 birthday he would graduate from Moses Lake High School and be serving on a Navy oil tanker in the North Atlantic. Don volunteered for service in the war, and after specialized training in diesel engines that powered the ships, he was assigned to serve aboard the U. S. S. Elokomin AO-55. The ship helped refuel the convoys that traversed the dangerous North Atlantic. Don was the last surviving crew member of the Elokomin who served during WWII. After the war, Don returned to his home in Eastern Washington where he continued his love of diesel engines. He purchased a truck and began his life-long career as a truck driver by hauling hay to Western Washington. While in Ellensburg, he found the love of his Life, Barbara "Barb" J. Blue. They were married in Ephrata on June 2, 1947, and had three children. After a few months, Don and Barb moved to Western Washington where they lived, worked, and raised their children in Tenino and Lacey during the years until their retirement. For almost 40 years, Don drove trucks of any kind with any kind of load (hay, logs, dynamite, gasoline, or beer). The final 20 years of his career were spent working for Santry trucking, hauling Olympia beer. No other driver for the company could match Don's record of having over two million miles without a chargeable accident. After retirement in 1983, Don and Barb sold their home in Lacey and took on a fun new chapter in their life. They moved into their RV full time and became RV wagon masters. Working for Tracks to Adventure and Points South, they led over 100 caravans on trips to places in Mexico, New Zealand, and along the full length of the Oregon trail in addition to over 25 trips to Alaska. During the '80s and '90s, the citizens band radio (CB) was the most common form of communication among caravanners. Don and Barb's call sign was ROVER 99. In 1996, they bought a home in Centralia, although for several years they continued to travel to Alaska in the summers and to Arizona in the winter. In July of 2019, after 72 years of marriage, Don was preceded in death by his wife, Barb. His death was also preceded by his daughter, Donna Jean; his granddaughter, Jennifer Lynne Grate; and step grandchildren, Robert "Bobby" Lund and Mary Lund. Michael Bryant

Michael Bryant

Age - 59

May 20, 2023

On May 7, 2023, the world lost one of the greatest souls ever as Michael Edward Bryant, 59, passed from this life into a better kingdom. Mike is survived by his dad, Lyle Bryant; his mother, Sherelen Wildhaber (Tony); his sister, Brenda Bryant Anderson (friend and brother-in-law, Dana); his nieces, Morgan Anderson (Kyle Darling), Chloe Anderson; and his grandmother, Jewel Anderson. Mike's love of learning materialized in many varied academic degrees. As his family would often joke, "Mike has more degrees than Fahrenheit. " He was a musician, historian, writer, mathematician, teacher, attorney, and project manager, with degrees spanning many universities, Pacific Lutheran, Central, Western, and University of Washington, to name a few. He truly exemplified a 21 Century Renaissance man with his life-long love of learning. His balanced perspective and deep thinking made him a valuable member of any community he belonged to. Mike had a tremendous impact in every place he worked, and his colleagues and friends alike respected and admired him. Mike's most beloved traits surrounded his kindness, compassion, quick wit, and ability to deeply connect with people from all walks of life. Maybe this was because of the many news publications, balancing all perspectives, he read daily; maybe it was because of his curiosity in people and life; but at the core of this connection was the fact that he had a pure, loving heart. Mike valued family. Growing up, he enjoyed many treks to Sun Lakes State Park, camping and water skiing with his master-ski boat driver father, Lyle, and phenomenal camper chef mother, Sherelen. Mike also relished extended family dinners, visiting with everyone while eating great food, including his Grandma Jude's famous chicken and dumplings. Mike absolutely adored his sister, Brenda, and nieces, Morgan and Chloe. He was a devoted uncle who always made time and cherished every moment spent with them. He took great pride in being a part of their lives. A memorial service to celebrate Mike's life will be held on Saturday, May 20, 2023, 1:00 p. m. at South Sound Manor Event Center, 455 North St. SE, Tumwater, WA 98501. Please come prepared to share the joy Mike brought to your life and others. In memory of Mike, the family is suggesting donations be made to the Bridge Music Project by clicking .Show more
