Sister Bay, WI

Sharon M. Donegan, age 76 of Sister Bay and a longtime resident of Ellison Bay, passed away at Scandia Village on Sunday, September 3, 2023, due to heart failure. Sharon was born on December 2, 1946, to the late Thomas and Dorothy (Boelter) Donegan in Chicago, IL. Growing up, Sharon and her parents shared a "two flat" with her cousin Barb's family. The two girls were inseparable as youngsters and throughout adulthood, where Barb followed Sharon to live in Door County. In Chicago, Sharon worked for Harris Bank, eventually becoming a VP of Operations. In 2003 she retired and moved to Door County buying a home in Ellison Bay and working with Premier Properties in their Cottage Glen sales office. Eventually she became the ultimate Door County volunteer, from the Clearing, to Shepherd of the Bay Church in Ellison Bay, to American Folklore Theatre in Fish Creek, to Birch Creek in Egg Harbor, and finally the Door County Land Trust in Sturgeon Bay. She would offer to help up and down the county, wherever it was needed. In the Cottage Glen development where she lived, one resident described her as "a very enthusiastic community leader who sought to bring us all together". She also served two terms as the HOA president. She liked to hike Door County trails and sit and knit with friends. She was also an active member of several philanthropic groups. Most of all she was known for her friendly smile, her love for her dog Molly plus more than a few cats. Whenever she saw you, her face would light up and she'd say "Hi! How're you doing?" And she'd wait, wanting to hear the answer! She is survived by her cousin Barbara Bock of Sister Bay. A memorial service honoring Sharon's life will be held at the Casperson Funeral Home, 2594 Bay Shore Drive, Sister Bay on Friday, September 29, 2023, at 11 a. m. with Chaplain Joy Zakrzewski officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow services. Donations in Sharon's memory to the Door County Land Trust, P. O. Box 65, Sturgeon Bay, 54235, will be greatly appreciated. Sharon's family is being assisted by Casperson Funeral Home of Sister Bay. Clifford Darken

Clifford Darken

Age - 93

November 8, 2023

Clifford Darken died in the early hours of Saturday, October 21, in the Care Center at Scandia Village, a retirement home in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. He was 93. Cliff had been a resident of Door County since 1986, when he and wife Josephine first moved to a cottage on North Orchard Lane, Ephraim, where they spent the early years of their retirement. Living in Door County was a dream come true, a dream he inherited from his own father, who had brought the family to the peninsula for summer vacations and fishing trips in the 1930s and 40s. Cliff thoroughly enjoyed his retirement years. He was an avid gardener. He loved to sit on his deck and watch the birds, foxes, deer, and other wildlife that passed through his yard. With patience and practice, he taught chipmunks to climb into his lap and eat seeds from his hand. Cliff took art classes at The Clearing, where he developed his skills at watercolor painting and wood carving. For a number of years he worked part-time in the gift shop at the Wagon Trail Resort, where he enjoyed interacting with guests and employees. He was a member of the Ephraim Men's Club. Cliff and Jo were also long-time members of the Fish Creek Seventh-day Adventist Church and, later, of the Shepherd of the Bay Lutheran Church. Cliff's faith in Jesus was a core part of his identity. Cliff was proud of his Danish heritage and maintained active relationships with family in Denmark. One highlight of his life was a six-week trip to Denmark in 1989, where he renewed and strengthened family ties in person one last time. Cliff also enjoyed hosting visitors from Denmark, especially Jorgen and Lena Madsen, with whom Cliff and Jo traveled all around the United States on several epic road trips. He was born Clifford Joachim Darken on May 2, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois, to Danish immigrants Rudolph and Karen Darken and grew up in the suburb of Elmwood Park. He was the second child by 10 years after brother Helmer. The family moved back to Denmark in 1935, permanently as they thought, but either because a business deal fell through or because of impending war in Europe, the move did not take and the family returned to the Chicago area. After only a few months in Denmark, five-year old Cliff had forgotten all his English, now knew only Danish, and had to relearn English. Cliff followed Helmer to Steinmetz High School and, during that time, started to work part-time for Illinois Tool Works (ITW). After high school he worked full-time as a lab technician in the heat-treat department, where steel cutting tools were made durable through a hardening process. In 1955 he was drafted and served two years in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in the Panama Canal Zone. After being discharged he returned to ITW, where he met Josephine Coppola, a legal secretary, and they married in 1963. Son Christian Joachim was born in 1964, followed by Rudolph Poul in 1966 and Robert Clifford in 1973. To make room for their growing family, Cliff and Jo moved in 1966 to a bungalow in the western suburb of Hillside. Late in his career Cliff was promoted to head metallurgist in the heat-treat department. He took early retirement from ITW in 1985, at age 55, after 37 years of service. He and Jo spent a year living in Connecticut before making the move to Door County. Cliff is survived by wife Josephine and sons Chris, Rudy, and Bob, as well as eight grandchildren. Cliff was laid to rest in Little Sister Cemetery in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. Casperson Funeral Home of Sister Bay is assisting the Darken family. Expressions of sympathy, memories, and photos of Cliff may be shared with his family through his tribute page at www. caspersonfuneralhome. com. Mildred Carlson

Mildred Carlson

Age - 93

October 10, 2023

Mildred Catherine Carlson of Hendersonville, North Carolina entered her heavenly home on Sunday, October 1, 2023, after a brief stay at UNC Health Pardee Hospital in Hendersonville. Called "Dolly" by all who knew her, she was 93 years old. Dolly was born on May 17, 1930, in Ironwood, Michigan, the daughter of Milo and Anna Sabol. By God's grace she was clothed in Christ at her baptism, and she was confirmed in the Christian faith on May 17, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church of Rhinelander, Wisconsin. After graduating from Luther L. Wright High School of Ironwood, Dolly was employed over the years at Michigan Bell; AC Spark Plug; Rhinelander Paper Mill; Carlson Funeral Home of Rhinelander; and the Cliffs of Minnetonka. She considered serving the Lord as a wife, mother, and grandmother to be her highest calling in life. Dolly embraced numerous charitable programs in Rhinelander over the years, often involved in fundraising for them. For instance, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra was dear to her heart. Even more precious were the churches in which she and her husband were active members: Zion Lutheran of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; Ascension Lutheran of Plymouth, Minnesota; Ascension Lutheran of Sarasota, Florida; and Living Savior Lutheran of Hendersonville. Encouraged by the gospel of Jesus Christ, she frequently expressed a humble gratitude for God's saving grace, and in her later years she often stated her desire to be with Jesus and with her loved ones in heaven. On September 13, 1952, Dolly married James R. Carlson at Zion Lutheran Church of Rhinelander. The two of them made their home in Rhinelander for 34 years; in Minnetonka, Minnesota for seven years; and in Sarasota for 27 years before moving to Hendersonville in 2020. The Lord blessed Dolly and Jim with three daughters; three sons-in-law; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her Savior and her church, Dolly's family was always her greatest joy. Dolly was gifted with a remarkable ability to strike up a conversation with every person she met. Her genuine interest in other people's lives, her concern for their families, and her sharp-as-a-tack memory of those conversations were quite endearing. She never grew weary of sending thoughtful handwritten cards and notes to family members, longtime friends, and even recent acquaintances. In addition to her parents, Dolly was preceded in death by her brothers John, Joseph, George, and Emil; by her sisters Anne Stefanidies and Mary Paich; and by her daughter Anne Hoyer. Dolly's surviving family includes her husband Jim of Hendersonville; son-in-law, Pastor Philip Hoyer of Jacksonville, Florida; daughter Catherine (Pastor Paul) Zell of Hendersonville; and daughter Mary (Dr. Thomas) Zellmer of Sister Bay, Wisconsin. In addition, she is survived by eight grandchildren: Andrew (Jen) Hoyer; John Hoyer; Elizabeth (Nick) Konietzko; Joseph Zell; Emily (Matt) Rothe; Heidi Zell; Dr. Catherine Zellmer; and Dr. Erich (Alicia) Zellmer. Dolly was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Ava, Andrew, Julian, Gabriel, and Mila. A memorial service celebrating God's gift of eternal life will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at Living Savior Lutheran Church of Hendersonville, with Pastor Philip Hoyer and Pastor Paul Zell officiating. Memorials may be directed to the building fund of Living Savior Lutheran Church of Hendersonville or to the student aid fund of Ascension Lutheran Church of Sarasota, Florida.
