Lee was a devout father, grandfather, and husband who lived an active life working and helping others up until his passing. He was born in Hackensack, NJ in 1936 to Leon N. King Sr. and Jeannette (Frappier) King. Leon was the 2nd of 8 children growing up in Abington, CT, before joining the Army in 1953. While in the Army, stationed in Germany, he met his wife, Hannelore E. (Romer) King. The couple began their life together in Hartford, CT, before purchasing a home in Enfield, CT. Russell Costa Sr

Russell Costa Sr

Age - 78

December 1, 2023

Russell "Bumpa" Costa, Sr. , of Hampden MA passed away in his sleep on November 28, 2023. In life, Russ suffered no fools and rather emphatically put on no airs. It is fitting, therefore, to honor him in death by dispensing with the formalities found in most obituaries. So here we go. Born in New Bedford, MA on January 21, 1945, he was raised there and in Brockton, MA. He served in the U. S. Army from 1965 to 1968. He moved to Springfield in 1973 where he worked for the city for over 30 years until his retirement in 2004. Proud of his Portuguese heritage, Russ, always a foodie, was an excellent cook especially of traditional dishes. Whether it was the cooking or the corny jokes (more on that in a minute) he somehow managed to convince Marilyn Smith to marry him in the Summer of '69. They may or may not have had a shotgun wedding; but it didn't matter. Together, in hard times and in good, they raised six happy kids in Karen, Russell Jr. ("Ra"), James (Jay), Kelly, Joseph (Joey) and Kim (Kimmy). Russ was "that dad" coaching their sports teams and teaching them how to change flat tires. As for Marilyn, fifty-four years later he still had a difficult time being away from her for more than a few hours. And speaking of difficult times, for almost 30 years the universe took its best shots at Russ, hitting him with multiple heart attacks, various types of cancer and all manner of aches and pains. He was having nothing of it. He beat it all (well, almost all. . . ) living a full life with his uniquely restless energy and endless supply of mostly awful "dad jokes. " In his later years, nothing softened Russ's ornery demeanor more than his 20 (ridiculous right?!) grandchildren. Whether tending his tomato plants, taking a Walmart run, or redeeming his soda cans, he was rarely without a "mini-me" companion. And let's be honest, once the grandkids got their licenses and could chauffeur him around, he seemed to like them even more. This is the part where we list all the grandkids Bumpa loved and influenced so much. Get comfortable. We warned you there are 20 whom he lovingly referred to as his personal United Nations: Monica, Carol, Jorge, Cindy, Angel, Ricardo, Jaime, Kimberly, Catarino, Ethan, Anthony, Jason, Justin, Shamsiddin, Ghazi, Omari, Nasir, Jada, Imani and Mariah. We miss you already Russ: your endless supply of jokes, your "helpful" driving directions and, of course, your encyclopedic knowledge of where to get the best deals on fried clams. Family and friends are invited to gather to celebrate Russell on Tuesday December 5, 2023 from 10:30am - 12:00pm. A small service will be a 12pm.Show more
