Benito "Benny" Vargas Sr. , 75, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023. He was born on February 12, 1948, in Muncie, Indiana, the youngest son of Juan I. "Mexican John" Vargas Sr. and Ruth (Williams) Vargas Robinson. He attended Muncie Community Schools and later enlisted into the U. S. Army, 82nd Airborne Division, serving a tour during the Vietnam war at the young age of seventeen. He was honorably discharged and earned several medals including, the Good Conduct Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal, and Sharpshooter M04, M16. He was promoted to Platoon Sargeant at the young age of seventeen. In order to be in that type of position, it has to be a God-given talent and not something someone can teach you. That one scenario of signing up for the Army and going to Vietnam, in the middle of it all tells you the type of person that he was. He was a learner, a listener, a leader, a comedian and definitely an entertainer. He was the people's people, a people person and was always on the go. After his tour in Vietnam, he was employed at Warner Machines and later changed his career path and began driving semi-tractor trailers for Yellow Freight where he retired. He was able to work while still enjoying life, people, places and things. For those who knew him, let's celebrate his day! Let's remember all the teachings and lessons he gave to anyone that asked, and even those that did not ask because he was always trying to help someone make their life better one day at a time. On one end of the spectrum, he wasn't the king of The Dirty Dozens; but then on the other end of the spectrum, he was the king of The Dirty Dozens, at least that's what he thought, so maybe later we need to play the game and see what's up. He was affectionately known as "Benny Vargas" around Muncie, "Poppa" by his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and "Daddy, Dad, & Pops" by his children. Survivors include his loving wife Yolonda J. Vargas of Muncie; two daughters, Michelle (Vargas) Jackson and Dannielle (Vargas) Barkley (Cesar W) of Browns Mills, NJ. ; two sons, Benito Vargas Jr. (Carrie) of Hartford City, and Juan I Vargas III.
