Shane Robert Frickey, 27, was born on January 14, 1996, in Price, Utah, to parents Shelly Child and Travis Frickey. On July 18, 2023, this incredible young man chose to end his journey on this earth after a valiant battle with depression. He is survived by his mother, Shelly (Keith) Child; his father, Travis Frickey; his brother, Austin (Amanda) McPhail; and his sister, Ashley (Jeffery) Crist. Shane truly loved an adventure and exploring new places, and was adamant about making amazing memories. That voracious sense of adventure is something that we will all carry on for him. His many friendships meant the world to him, and he loved hiking, racing dirt bikes, taco nights, and baking his famous brownies to share with them. And he also loved fixing things, and he could figure out how to fix anything. He was extremely methodical in taking something apart, identifying the problem and meticulously putting it back together good as new. Even if the project was painstakingly difficult or complicated, he’d stick it out and find a way to get it done. It was a wildly impressive skill. And that laugh…Shane had the most magical laugh, he had this distinct look of surprise when he laughed really hard, and if you really got him good, he’d laugh and pull his fist to his chest…we could listen to his laugh on a loop forever. Shane had such an incredible sense of adventure and passion for life that his death will be utterly shocking for many, and for those who knew how he was simultaneously haunted by a deep pain, can find a sliver of comfort knowing that he is finally at peace. Within his illness, there was a duality to Shane, he simultaneously had some of the highest highs and the lowest of lows. And while chasing those highs, he created a truly beautiful life full of adventure and meaningful friendships, and even at his young age he experienced more than most people do in a life time… and while struggling with the lows, he taught himself and others to find joy in the smallest of things, to have grace and patience with yourself, and to know that you are strong even when you don’t feel like you are. It is impossible to prepare for the harsh reality of losing a loved one at far too young of an age. To lose Shane in this manner is devastating. It is a finality that has been difficult to accept. This tragedy has left behind a desperate longing to understand the rationale and unfairness behind mental illness. His death has marred us in significant, painful, and permanent ways. Suicide is a complicated end, and our lives have been shattered. Sadly, our family is not alone. One person taking their own life every 40 seconds is an epidemic of massive proportion, leaving no family untouched. As of May, 2023, according to data from the CDC, Utah ranks 14th for the highest number of deaths by suicide in the country. Surviving families of this epidemic are left to navigate through the crushing punches of abandonment, anger, shock, blame, sorrow, guilt, regret and confusion. It has left us utterly breathless. We want you all to know how much it has meant to our family to have you there during this difficult time. Our family is incredibly grateful for all the love and support we have received from Shane’s friends, family, colleagues and neighbors. Hearing your stories, your kind words, and the seeing the pictures and the memories you shared have done more to take the weight off of our hearts than you could ever know. Shane choosing to leave us in no way means he felt unloved or felt like he didn’t matter. That’s not how this illness works. Shane knew he was loved, and he loved you all just as much in return, and we hope that someone who needed to hear that, will. Shane was an incredible person with a sweet heart, a voracious determination, a long list of talents and a distinct smile that will forever comfort us in our memories. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Thank you for sharing the love you had for Shane with our family. We will hold it forever. For anyone struggling, don’t be scared, embarrassed or hesitant to seek help and support. Shane wasn’t afraid, he fought hard and he’d want the same for you. 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: The 988 Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones. Douglas Alder

Douglas Alder

Age - 91

November 28, 2023

Dr. Douglas D. Alder, beloved husband, father, grandfather, professor and college president, passed away at home on November 25, 2023 surrounded by family with his beloved Elaine holding his hand. He was 91. Born November 10, 1932 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Georgia Ellen Payzant and Linden Benson Alder, he became known by many as an enthusiastic mentor, community leader, teacher, scholar, historian, speaker and author whose exuberant presence instantly filled nearly every room he entered. Doug graduated from Salt Lake City's East High School (1951) where he developed a love of learning and established enduring friendships with many, including some who became prominent Utah political and ecclesiastical leaders. At the University of Utah, he earned B. A. and Master's degrees in history and met the love of his life, Elaine Marie Reiser, daughter of A. Hamer Reiser and Elizabeth Robina Baxter. The two married December 20, 1958, a few months after Doug's father died of a heart attack. While attending the UofU's LDS Seminary, Doug met legendary teacher Lowell Bennion, whose commitment to a life of service had a life-changing effect. Bennion and A. Hamer Reiser became Doug's father figures. Their influence inspired Doug to adopt lofty and profound ideals. Doug's commitment to a life of service further developed while serving as an LDS missionary in the Swiss-Austrian mission from 1953 to 1956 and the National Guard from 1959 to 1962. After his passion for history ignited at the UofU, Doug continued studying at the University of Oregon, where he received a Ph. D. in European history and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Vienna. In 1963 Dr. Alder began a 23 year-long teaching career at Utah State University (USU) in Logan, including 12 years as Honors Program Director. In 1967 he was named Professor of the Year. In 1973, the Alders spent a sabbatical year in Bloomington, Indiana supported by an American Council on Education's Leadership Fellowship. This inspired Doug's pursuit of the presidency at Dixie College (now Utah Tech University), where he served from 1986 to 1993. His leadership enabled improvements via endowments, academic program expansions and record student enrollments and graduations. His inclusive style inspired increased community engagement and institutional support. Doug is fondly remembered by his students for conducting "The Interview" through which he quickly established his ambitious, customized recommendations for their academic futures. He shunned "Get by-ism" and inspired many students to believe in themselves more than they previously knew possible. Thousands of these students credit him with offering profound advice that decisively altered their paths-toward greatness. In both Cache and Washington Counties, Doug served on many boards focused on supporting city/county libraries, historic preservation and arts/cultural events. Doug also served tirelessly in the LDS church. He was an important bridge between people of other faiths and Latter-day Saints. He loved teaching Sunday school, being a home teacher, singing in choirs, working for the Correlation committee at the LDS Church Office Building, nurturing the community of church historians, sitting on High Councils, serving as bishop (twice), serving with Elaine in the St. George Temple Presidency (1998-2001) and for 25 years as a Temple Sealer. Doug and Elaine raised four children, who, in their youth, helped build a modest cabin overlooking Bear Lake in Garden City, Utah. Dubbed "ALK Haven" (meaning All Little Kids Haven), the cabin is now the Alder's cherished multi-generational gathering retreat. Doug loved marveling at the beauty of Rich County, which became the setting for his novel Sons of Bear Lake. During his final 15 years, Doug valiantly danced around the debilitating effects of dementia, Parkinson's Disease, and then in 2023, bladder cancer. Until his final two months, he faced each day with unquenchable purpose and limitless drive while being blessed by Elaine's constant care and attention. The Alder family expresses deep gratitude for the outpouring of love from family and friends during Doug and Elaine's stay at The Covington of Lehi and tender service from the caregivers of Dignity Hospice who made his last two months more bearable. Doug is preceded in death by his parents, two infant brothers, Richard Jerome and Daniel Blaine, a sister, Judith Alder Saxey, and brother-in-law, Kent H. Saxey. He is survived by his devoted wife, Elaine, and his children, Scott (Betsy Hepworth), Elise (Russell) Clark, Nathan (Laurel Cannon), Lin (Pam Sunshine), and 14 grandchildren: Rebecca (Nick) Bjorkman, Benjamin Alder, Elizabeth (Brandon) Anderson, Ethan (Lindsey) Clark, Catherine Alder (Tim Russell), Jacob Alder (Zoe Morgan), Caleb Clark (Rachel Benson), Madeleine Alder, Emily Clark (Hunter Brannen), Clara Alder (Clayton Holdstock), Jonathan Alder, Eli Wilcox, Abby Wilcox, Avery Alder, and eight great grandchildren - Alexis, Elle, Nixon, Adabella, Rosett, Nova, Carolly and Milo. Daniel Sadler Jr

Daniel Sadler Jr

Age - 69

November 23, 2023

Daniel Charles Sadler, Jr. , 69, loving son, husband, father, grandfather, friend, and all around amazing human being, ascended to his heavenly home on November 18, 2023 in St. George, Utah. Born October 19, 1954 in Bangor, Maine to Daniel Charles Sadler, Sr. and Charlotte Sadler, Dan was a good apple that his father said fell far from the tree, but was the apple of his mother’s eye. Dan grew up with his two brothers, Don and Dee, near Pittsburgh, PA, graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School, served a full time mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Frankfurt, Germany, earned a Bachelor of Arts from Brigham Young University, and was an Advertising Sales Executive for the Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, and Beaver County Times. Dan was an active member of the LDS church and served in many callings, not least of all was his time as a Boy Scout Leader. Over the years he taught scores of young men outdoor skills, character development, and how to time a well-crafted pun. As an avid lover of nature, he spent as much time as possible outdoors, including as a very talented nature photographer, member of the Allegheny Mountain Rescue Group, geocacher, and hiker. Dan was also an event photographer for the Huntsman World Senior Games. Dan loved all forms of music, from Amadeus to Zappa. He began singing in children’s choirs at the age of 8, played trombone for twelve years in school concert and jazz bands, brass choirs and orchestras, performed in a number of local choirs and plays, and spent many years as a baritone and Board Member of the St. George Chamber Singers. His appreciation for listening to and performing music lives on in his children and grandchildren. Yet, with all of Dan’s many talents and callings, his legacy will be one of humanity. His kindness, affable nature, and willingness to serve will forever be his most endearing qualities. His sense of humor, quick wit, and ability to make others laugh will be his most memorable. Dan is known to always be ready with a helping hand or a snappy quip - even to the eye-rolling and exasperated sighs of those who were closest to him and had to put up with his incessant puns (which we secretly loved and will miss immensely. ) His love of The Three Stooges, Monty Python, Mel Brooks, and Mystery Science Theater 3000 will live on in his progeny and will be watched in his honor in perpetuity. And most important of all (according to his children and for the sake of their existence), was his marriage to the love of his life and eternal companion, Karen Whitehead, in Manti, Utah on April 22, 1977. They went on to create three amazing, phenomenal, spectacular children who to this day continue to give them much grief, consternation, and an expression synonymous with "posterior discomfort. " Despite their children, Dan and Karen lived a life full of loving companionship, celebrating the good times and weathering the difficult times as partners who were always there for one another. Their love for each other was their greatest gift and example to their children, grandchildren, and anyone who spent time in their home. Dan is survived by his loving wife, Karen; his boon companion of 12 years, Ludo; father, Daniel Sadler Sr. ; brother, Dee Sadler; children: Seth and Shanalee Sadler of Eagle Mountain UT, Meg Barber of Freedom PA, and Brittany and Josh Atkins of Bridgewater PA; grandchildren: Kyleigh, Grant, Gabby, Evan, Marley, and Dylan; and many family and friends who loved him dearly. Dan is preceded in death by his mother, Charlotte Sadler, and brother, Don Sadler.Show more
