SCPO USN Retired Wayne Scott "Scotty" Silver, 79, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2023, surrounded by his family. Scotty was born on November 5, 1943, in Yancey Co. , NC, to the late Bertha and Howard Silver. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Peggy Jean. Scotty joined the United States Navy at 18 years old as an electrician, later working to achieve his degree and become a nuclear electrician in the Silent Service (submarines). He served 24 years retiring from the USS Cincinnati in Norfolk, VA, as the COB. He spent later years working for Asheville Industries, a subsidiary of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Clayton Homes. He and his loving wife, Fannie Mae "Sunny" Silver, raised their children and grandchildren in Western North Carolina. He was a proud lifetime member of the Asheville Elks Lodge. Scotty was an avid golfer and some say a critically acclaimed professional pool player. He loved to cook homemade meals for his family and indulged in any baked goods Sunny would prepare. In his retired years you would find him enjoying a good shoot'em up spy or military book in his favorite recliner and enjoying an ice-cold beer in the afternoon. He was a beloved husband, father, dad and papaw. He is survived by his wife, Sunny; his sons, Mark (Melissa) and Scott Silver, Damon Weirick (Lisa); his daughter, Chantal Sheehan (Tim); his grandchildren, Miriah Silver-Sheehan, Sarah Silver, Emily Silver, Collin Weirick (Becky), and Caitlin Davis (Juston); and great-grandchild, Declan Davis. Services with military honors will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery Chapel, Black Mountain, on Thursday, August 31, 2023, at 2:00 p. m. with a Celebration of Life following at the Asheville Elks Lodge at 3:30 p. m. In lieu of flowers we ask that donations be made in his name to the - Elizabeth House, 211 N. Main St. , Hendersonville, NC 28792.

Asheville - Sandra Elaine Sparks Sprinkle, 80, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at her home while surrounded by family. A native of Mitchell County, she resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Avery and Oleta Duncan Sparks, and was also preceded in death by her son, David Larry Sprinkle, II. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of over 62 years, Rev. D. Larry Sprinkle; son, Stephen Scott Sprinkle and wife Ericka; granddaughters: Kennedy Sprinkle, and Avery Sprinkle; brother, David Sparks and wife Libby; special cousin, Karen Sprinkle; and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Victory Baptist Church, 80 Olivette Rd, Asheville, NC 28804, with her husband, Rev. D. Larry Sprinkle and her son, Rev. Stephen Scott Sprinkle officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12 till 2 PM at the church. Betty Jean Conner Lance passed away December 1, 2023, at the age of 86. Betty Jean was born November 28, 1937, in Fairview, NC to the late Homer Conner and Fairlee Searcy Conner. She was also preceded in death by her siblings; James Conner, Mary Conner Daniels, Frank Conner, Shirley Conner Guinn and Bill Conner. She grew up in Candler where she met Jerry Lance. They married and were one month short of their 66th anniversary. Betty Jean was much loved by family, friends and business clients and touched many people during her life. She was labeled the community librarian because of her ferocious desire to order and read books which she would pass on to family and friends after finishing reading them. She was affectionately called "Girlpop" by her oldest grandkids and "Sugar" by the younger grandkids. During her life, she worked in church activities and children sports with her husband. She had a career in banking and through company programs lacked only a few hours in obtaining a degree in business. Betty Jean is survived by her husband Jerry Lance; three children, Brad Lance (Ashley), Denise Bordeaux (John) and Paul Lance; six grandchildren Clay Bordeaux (Brittany), Casey Bordeaux, Corey Bordeaux, Parker Lance, Leighton Lance and Porter Lance and one great grandson, DJ Jacobs. The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 9, 2023 from 1:00 to 1:30 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 pm in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian with Pastor Derrick McCarson officiating. Barbara Joy Mieras Sanders, 89, passed away at her home in Givens Estates November 30, 2023. She was born April 5, 1934 in Maurice, Iowa to Ralph and Mabel Mieras. Her family moved to Annville, Kentucky, when she was 3. She lost her father to an accident when she was 9. She was valedictorian of her class in Annville. She left home at age 17, lived at the YMCA in Chicago and attended Gregg Business College. 2 years later she started working for Union Carbide in Oak Ridge, Tennessee where she met Paul at a pizza party. They got engaged out on a hike in the Smokey mountains and were married at her grandmother's home in Annville in 1955. They moved to Lake Bluff, IL in January 1958 and to Libertyville that November with their firstborn in tow. In 1965 they built the house where they would remain in till Paul's retirement. In addition to raising her children, she volunteered in many capacities at The First United Methodist Church of Libertyville. She had an interest in journalism and took classes. Her article entitled "Life Begins at 40" was published in the local paper. She has also written up biographies, one for Paul and one for herself. She earned her Master Gardener certification which was proudly displayed in the landscaping of their homes, as well as with the floral arranging business she started and ran from each home. In May of 1995, she and Paul made their move to Asheville, NC. They designed and built a beautiful home on the side of the mountain. Her gardening skills 'peaked' at their mountainside home as her design was featured in several Garden Walks. She delighted in showing her grandchildren 'the mountains' and took them on fun adventures. In 2005, they moved to Givens Retirement Community in Asheville. As Paul's dementia progressed, Barb became his full time caregiver. She kept him physically healthy and happy til he passed in 2018. Her friends at MemoryCare helped Barb keep Paul safely at home for many years. Since then she has shared her caring nature with her many friends within the Givens Community, especially her Lady Huntingdon friends. Barb enjoyed sharing her gardening knowledge with many in her community. She is survived by Carol (Sanders) Hughes, Walter Sanders and Reid(Amy Kessler) Sanders, her much loved 3 Grandchildren, Amy (Steven) Hazen, Jeff Hughes and Sam(Kailin Potter)Hughes, and recently met great grandchildren, Timber Sage and Willa Ann Hazen. Her parents, husband Paul, son Giles and sister Kathleen predeceased her. A memorial service for Barbara will be held on December 9, 2023 at 10am in the Norma F. Pullman Chapel at Givens Estates. Light refreshments will be served afterwards. Linda Faye Jumper, 61, of Cherokee when home to be with the Lord on December 01, 2023, at Mission Hospital in Asheville. She was Born in Cherokee on September 6, 1962, to the late Stancil Jumper and Lillian Toineeta Jumper, she was their second child and lived her entire life in the Wolftown community. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister Barbara Catt, and a half-brother, Arneach Toineeta. Linda is survived by her sister Tammy Gibby (Owen); a special aunt Rena Cooper (Co), her significant other Sam "Chute" Watty; 5 nieces and nephews: J. R. Catt (Denise), Remy Catt (Jake), Jeffrey Catt (Lynn), Stephanie Catt, and Mattie Catt; numerous great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as several special relatives including: Dusty Cooper (Laurel), Raynee (Joey), Lilly, Edward, Carter, Sarah, Kylo, Azlyn, Tammy Jackson (Tuff), Reva Toineeta (Nehi); and special friends: Cindy Wolfe, Angie Garcia, Tony and Kelly Deese, Justin French, and Mary Hornbuckle. Linda attended Southwestern Community College, where she received her associate degree in administrative office technology. She was employed by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Indians for 27 years, where she was a conscientious worker committed to excellence on her job. Affectionately known as Boo Boo by her family and friends Linda was a sweet, gentle soul, and was special to all who knew her. She was kind and compassionate by nature and demonstrated great love and consideration for her immediate and extended family and friends. She loved to travel and made seasonal trips to the beach and to the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area. She was enthusiastically involved in the collection and marketing of Tupperware. An excellent cook, her life revolved around her love of family and family gatherings. She was, indeed, the center of the family and community events. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday December 6, 2023, at the Cherokee Church of God, at 2pm, the Reverends Donald Bates, Keith Carson, and Aaron Bridges will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday December 5, 2023, from 5pm-11pm at the church. Burial will follow the services at the Laurel Cemetery located at 110 Teleeski Road in Cherokee. Virgil Harold "Jody" Lance, 91, of Mills River went to be with Jesus on Friday, December 1st, 2023, after a period of declining health. He was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather (Paw) and will be deeply missed by all that loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents: Sam and Ina Lance, brothers Ernest (Red), Howard, Ralph, Henry, Charles, and sister Lois Mullenax. He was a native of Brevard, NC but spent most of his adult life in the Mills River Community. He attended Fanning Chapel United Methodist Church. After many years of employment at Mountain Rug Mill in Fletcher, NC he retired and began enjoying his favorite past times, riding his lawn mower, and birdwatching from his front porch. He especially enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Hilda Cairnes Lance; daughters Cindy Dalton (Tony) of Brevard, and Debbie Melton (Bill) of Asheville; brothers Bill Lance (Marlene) and Jack Lance (Jan) of Brevard and sister Linda Owen (Herman) of Brevard; grandchildren whom he cherished dearly: Addison Dalton of Charlotte, Adrienne Dalton (Johnny Tan) of Washington, DC, and Tyler Melton of Asheville; and several nephews, nieces, and family friends. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, December 4, 2023 at Fanning Chapel UMC, 5490 Old Haywood Rd. , Mills River with Pastor Michael Phipps officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends will be received at the church one hour prior to the service, from 1 to 2 PM.
