Barbara Ann Lane Scharmann, age 92, of Brick, NJ, died on December 3, 2023, at Ocean Medical Center after a brief illness. Born April 1, 1931, Barbara was a lifelong resident of Point Pleasant Beach until her later years. Barbara was a proud graduate of Point Pleasant Beach High School, Class of 1948. Although awarded a full scholarship to Rider College, she began work @ Camp Evans in Wall Township, where she met the love of her life, Larry. Married in 1950, Barbara dedicated herself to raising her three children, which were some of the happiest times of her life. Summers were spent with children and friends at the beach and boardwalk. From 1967 to 1983, Barbara worked as PPB Administrator’s Secretary, then Deputy Borough Clerk, alongside her sister, Esther Wincklhofer. Upon Esther’s retirement in 1983, she took on the combined roles of Borough Clerk, Tax Collector, and Chief Financial Officer of PPB. Upon her retirement in 2002, Barbara was one of few to simultaneously hold NJ state certifications in all three areas. Her many contributions were honored when she was named as the ‘1996 Citizen of the Year’ by the local BPO Elks. Barbara’s volunteer efforts over the years included Honorary Life Member of the Municipal Clerk’s Association; President, Treasurer, & Secretary of the Point Pleasant Chapter of Deborah; Secretary of the Garnet Gulls Booster Association; Treasurer of the Women’s Club of Point Pleasant; PPB PTA; and a long-time Girl Scout Leader. Barbara was loving and caring to all. She was known for her laughter, compassion, and, most importantly, a sense of fair play. Ever embracing the child within, Barbara loved traveling, playing games (especially bridge), and singing songs with family. Barbara was predeceased by her beloved husband of 54 years, Lawrence E. Scharmann, her parents, Robert J. and Mary Hamill Lane, sister Esther Lane Wincklhofer, and brother Ralph H. Lane. Barbara is survived by her son, Robert L. Scharmann (Tonasket, Washington), son and daughter-in-law, Lawrence C. and Judy L. Scharmann (Lincoln, Nebraska), and daughter and son-in-law, Linda S. and Dwight A. DeButts (Point Pleasant, NJ). She is also survived by seven grandchildren, James Scharmann, Barbara DeButts, Jason Scharmann, Alex Scharmann, Pamela DeButts, Amy Scharmann, and Bobby Scharmann, and ten great grandchildren.
