Scott Allan Benson passed away on Friday, October 6, 2023 at the age of 66. He was born with fiery red hair August 25, 1957 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Noel Anthon Benson and Patricia Jayne Smith Benson. He was the youngest of four children and was just one year and one day younger than his older twin sisters. He attended school Southgate and West Center Elementary, Blackfoot Junior High, and Blackfoot High School, graduating in 1975. After graduation he went to work for the National Forest Service in the Caribou National Forest. He was a heavy equipment operation and loved his time in the forest. His daughter Amanda born on December 1, 1984 in Blackfoot. He deeply loved her and her 3 children. In January of 1987 an accident took his eyesight, leaving him totally blind in both eyes. He had to relearn how to live in a sightless world. He moved to Boise and attended the Idaho School for the Blind. It was there that he met his future wife Kristine Mariner, who was also blind. They were married on June 21, 1989. His parents encouraged him to go back to school so he enrolled in Idaho State University. He graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in History from ISU on May 13, 1993. He was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, a high honor society for individuals majoring in History. Scott was also the first person in Idaho to receive LIVE Foundation scholarship. At Idaho State he was active in C. W. Hog (Cooperative Wilderness Handicapped Outdoor Group). He skied, scuba dived, played softball, and hunted with the group. Scott loved it whenever he could talk someone into taking him fishing on the Snake River. He also served for many years on the State of Idaho's Independent Living Council, and served as a cub master in the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved talking about History to anyone who had a question. He loved reading and learning new things. He had a wonderful talent for being a kind and loving caregiver to his parents and wife. He had a great sense of direction and even though he was blind, could navigate to wherever he needed to go. He once walked the 7 miles from Moreland to Blackfoot to see his new granddaughter who had just been born. Scott once said in an interview, "I've been shot up, shot at, cut up, beat up, been in car wrecks, blown up, and run over by a city bus in Boise. I'm a survivor and I'm waiting to see what they come up with next to try to kill me. " If you were lucky enough to know Scott, you know he had at least 9 lives and lived each one to the fullest. He had a lot of trials in his life, with health and blindness, but met each one head on with determination. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Kristine. He is survived by his daughter Amanda Benson (John Osterhoudt) of Jerome. His brother Kirk (Sheri) Benson of Idaho Falls, sisters, Laurel Brummond and LeeAnn (Dennis) Parker both of Blackfoot. He has three grandchildren Dominic Naranjo, Donavan Naranjo, and Serinity Naranjo, all of Jerome. The family would like to thank Aspen Home Health and Hospice of Blackfoot, especially Cassi and Darcy, for the wonderful care they gave Scott. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Friday, October 13, 2023 at the Moreland Cemetery, under direction of the Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends at the Moreland LDS Church at 1:00 p. m. before proceeding to the cemetery. Obituary Karen Stander Thomson, 84 Karen Stander Thomson passed away on November 30, 2023, enveloped in the love of her family. Karen was born at home on February 2, 1939, to Jess Mathew and Hartense Wahlstrom Stander. She joined 2 older sisters, Maureen and Shirley and was a big sister to Evelyn, JR, and Ada Marie. She graduated from Snake River High School and attended Ricks College. It was at Ricks College where she met the love of her life Roy Thomson. They were married & sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple on November 14, 1958. They lived in Rexburg, Logan, Tabor, and Aberdeen. In 1969 they bought the dairy farm in Thomas from her father. She lived in the lava rock house her grandfather built for the rest of her life, with the exception of a mission with Roy in Birmingham Alabama. The Haileyville Branch and Crimson Tide will always have a piece of her heart. Karen was a creator deep in her bones. She could create anything with string, a hook or needle & a toilet paper tube. She created and cultivated a love for her Savior and was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and fulfilled many callings in the primary and scouts. She shared her creative talents as a supporter of the Boy Scouts of America where she spent many years as a den mother and a Webelos leader. She was a member of the Owl Patrol in Wood Badge and earned the Silver Beaver award. Karen was a member of Farm Bureau and spent countless hours volunteering in schools, setting up fair booths and being on the women's board. She was a recipient of the Farm Bureau Woman of the Year. She always said that when her first child was born, she prayed for patience. She didn't know that blessing instigated patience for thirteen children. She and Roy built a tight-knit family that is always ready to party. She taught them well to create, work & grow. Her posterity now includes 38 grandchildren, 56 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren. She is now a guardian angel for her children, Linda (Bill), Glenn (Shannon), Vicki, Wayne (Sheryl), Cathy, Daryl (Elizabeth), Neill (Emily), Shane, Chris (Trina), Kelly (Lisa), Bert, son-in-law, and LiYe, daughter-in-law, her sister Shirley Evans, and brother, JR Stander. She was welcomed home to Heaven with a long-awaited kiss from Roy and hugs from daughter Darla Kay, sons, Devin and Keith, her parents, three sisters, Maureen Doyle, Evelyn Stander, and Ada Marie Larsen; and angel grandbabies. Viewing services will be held Friday December 8, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Hawker Funeral Home. The funeral services will be held Saturday, December 9th at 11 am at the Blackfoot West Stake Center. Interment will follow in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Brio Hospice and Senior Helpers for their care and support. Obituary Lynn Henry Plesner, 83 Lynn Henry Plesner, 83 of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away suddenly at his home. Lynn was born June 16, 1940 in Blackfoot, Idaho to Henry Plesner and Minnie Ard. He was a life long resident of Blackfoot and graduated from Blackfoot High School with the class of 1960. Four years after graduation he would marry his sweetheart Katherine Joahanna Wasia in Blackfoot. Together they had two sons, Michael and Marc. Lynn worked as a meat cutter for many years. He began with Okay Market and then eventually for Albertsons where he remained until his retirement. Lynn was an avid bowler and a long time member of the Blackfoot Elks. His favorite past time was spent on the water, fishing. His family takes comfort in knowing that he is now back with his favorite fishing buddy, his father-in-law, Ted Wasia. He spent his retirement years camping, fishing and traveling many places including Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Hawaii, Mexico and Arizona. Lynn is survived by his wife Katherine, his sons, Michael (Nicole) Plesner and Marc (Manal) Plesner both of Blackfoot, his sister Donna Barrick of Amarillo, Texas and his three grandchildren, Mykah (Clayton) Udy, Mira Plesner and Mavric Plesner. He was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Minnie and his siblings Maxine, Ione, Bryce and Dale. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Thursday, December 7, 2023, at the Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends starting at 10am until time of service. Interment will follow in the Grove City Cemetery. Paul Dean Mecham, 85, of Firth passed away at The Willows Assisted Living in Blackfoot. Paul was born on May 12, 1938 to Lee Mecham and Leila Christensen Mecham. He graduated from Firth High School in 1956. On January 31, 1958 he married Shirley Wiseman and they made their home in Firth. They had two children, Rusty and Laurie Ann. He worked for Westinghouse for many years. He then changed jobs and went to work as a service technician for a printing company. His job required a lot of traveling. He enjoyed horses, camping with the grandkids, fishing with the guys, and overnight ice fishing trips. He enjoyed many four wheeling trips to Kanab, Utah with friends. One of the biggest traveling adventures he took was a trip to Africa with his siblings. Another of his favorite vacations was a cruise his granddaughter, Jamie, and great grandkids took him on to Mexico. Paul was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Marjean (Myrl) Weekes, sister, Carol Marsden, son, Rusty, daughter, Laurie, brother-in-law Mike Winterbottom, and a great grandchild. Paul is survived by his wife Shirley of Firth, sister, Sharron (Doug) Evans of Oregon, sister, Cheri Winterbottom of Firth, brother-in-law Ron Marsden, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Obituary J Wayne VanOrden, 89 J Wayne VanOrden passed away at the age of 89 of natural causes on November 25, 2023 in his home. He was born November 14, 1934 in Blackfoot Idaho. Wayne was preceded in death by his son Kent VanOrden (Ann Miller), son-in-law Lanny Ogden, Grandson Aaron, two stillborn great-granddaughters and his siblings Rulan, Phillip, Maxine, Horace, Maurice, and Wayne Sr. He is survived by his wife Donna, his children Lori (Lon Harrington), Bryan Gae Olsen), Ann (Lanny Ogden), John (Chris Yancey), and Wayne Jr. (Romie Hone), 33 grandchildren and sixty great-grandchildren, and his sister Carol Fields. Wayne was a lifelong resident of Snake River. He graduated in 1952 from Snake River High School. He married Donna Hepworth August 19, 1954 in the Idaho Falls Temple. He founded Ideal Electric in 1965. He loved his family and the gospel of Jesus Christ. He served LDS missions with Donna in Washington DC and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and also served as a sealer in the temple. He was a respected member of the community and was key in naming the Snake River High School. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Wayne will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Viewing services will be held Friday December 1st, 2023 from 6-8 pm at Hawker Funeral Home. Obituary Roger William Spillman, 71 Roger William Spillman, 71, passed away Monday, November 20, 2023 at his home in Blackfoot. Roger was born November 30, 1951 in Coalinga, California, the son of Clyde Charles and Delores Scheel Spillman. Roger grew up in Coalinga where he attended schools and graduated high school. After completing his formal education, he enlisted in the US Army. He was stationed at Fort Eustis in Virginia and Fort Campbell in Kentucky. He was a Vietnam veteran. Roger was a Christian. Roger worked in Maintenance for the Blackfoot School District for many years until his retirement. He was well-known and well-liked throughout the district by staff and students. He treated everyone with respect and had fun with the students as he got to know many of them. He enjoyed woodworking and photography. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. Roger is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Karen and Justin David Beaulieu; grandchildren, Roger Lloyd Beaulieu, Justin David Beaulieu Jr. and Joyce Margarette Karen Beaulieu, all of San Diego CA; and sister Wanda Mapel of Alsea OR. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Delores Spillman and his grandparents, Edward Scheel and Gladys Sorenson. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a. m. Monday, November 27, 2023 at Hawker Funeral Home. The family will meet with friends from 5-7:00 p. m. Sunday, November 26, 2023 at Hawker Funeral Home and again one hour prior to the service. Interment and Military Honors will follow the service at 1:00 p. m. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery in Blackfoot.
