J.T. retired from Plastic Industries where he was the head of the maintenance department, and then later worked for Lowe’s and Wal-Mart. He is preceded by his father and stepmother: Roy Clarence and Sue Byrum, and mother and stepfather: Stella Parris and Charles Stewart, his brothers: Clarence Byrum and Gene Byrum, and former wives: Anna Mae Richardson Byrum and Linda Turner Byrum. J.T. is survived by his daughter: Brenda Day (Ray), sons: Rickie Byrum (Bertha) and Steve Byrum (Alice), grandchildren: Melissa Key, Tammy Roderick, Amy West, Heather Robbins (Josh), Michael Byrum (Kim), Lisha Dugan (Scott), and Scott Corum, along with 11 great-grandchildren and 11 great-great-grandchildren. Rev. Charlie Mack Jr. age 82 went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 14, 2024at his home surrounded by his family. Rev. Mack was well known for his service as a minister of the gospel, especially in the A.M.E. Zion Church, where he served as pastor at Harwell Chapel A.M.E. Church in Etowah, TN. He worked until his retirement from McMinn County Schools as a bus driver, and spent many years driving an 18 wheeler for companies like Catnapper. He was the son of the late Charlie Mack Sr. and Callie Moss Mack. He is also preceded in death by his first wife Sarah Joyce Mack and son Charlie Mack III, sister, Ruby Hines, and brother Joe Mack. Survivors include his wife Alina Mack of Athens, TN. Two sons, Morrow (Kelley) Mack , and Danny( Linda) Mack all of Athens, TN. Daughter, Melody Upton and adopted daughter Eise Goldston, adopted son Jan McCowan. Step-children, Christina Upton, Brock Arnwine, and Ly-Bron Upton. Kevin Shane Winters, 43, of Athens, passed away Monday, February 12, 2024 at his home. He was a native of Greenville, Mississippi and longtime resident of McMinn County. He was preceded in death by his mother, Cheryl Renee McDaniel Winters and his grandparents. He was a member of Keith Memorial United Methodist Church in Athens. Above all Kevin was a devoted father and husband to his wife Dyan and their children, Elizabeth, Henry and Charlotte and a lifelong friend to many. A national award winning educator, Kevin was currently employed as a Senior Specialist with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching. Kevin was known by his friends and colleagues to have a passion for helping his students be successful. Kevin was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan University and later earned his Master's degree from Tennessee Tech University. Kevin had numerous hobbies and especially loved Volunteer football. He will be greatly missed by friends, family, students, and all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Dyan Winters of Athens; children, Elizabeth Winters, Henry Winters, and Charlotte Winters. two brothers, Richard Cox and Scottie (Sherri Jo) Cox; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Robin and John Allen; special aunt and uncle, Terri and Stan Goodner; and many loving cousins and friends. We are sad to announce the passing of Evelyn Jeanette Armstrong at the NHC Healthcare in Athens, Tennessee at the age of 89 years old on February 7, 2024. Evelyn Jeanette Armstrong was born to the late Roxie Jane Moss Haley and Henry Haley on May 22nd,1934. She graduated from J.L. Cook High School in Athens, Tennessee in the year 1953. She worked as a Supervisor at General Motors in Grand Rapids Michigan for more than 25 years, and worked at Montgomery Wards in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the office. She worked at Quality Inn in Sweetwater Tennessee and Western Sizzler in Athens Tennessee both as a hostess. Evelyn was always a diligent worker, who took pride in whatever job or position that she held. Evelyn was an avid church goer who attended St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in Athens Tennessee. She held the position of Treasurer for a few years. Evelyn had a great love of fashion, she had suits, shoes, and purses in every, color and style. Evelyn’s greatest love was for her son, Michael Alan Armstrong whom she cherished. Evelyn was precedent in death by her parents Roxie Jane Moss Haley and Father Henry Haley, son, Michael Alan Armstrong, and brother -in- law Charlie Roberts. Her life will forever be cherished, by her sister Letha Roberts and niece, Michelle Benton (Anthony Benton), nephew Tommy Roberts and special cousin Mary L. Mack, with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Vernon Owen Carroll, 90, of Athens, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of McMinn County and was a son of the late Walter Lewis and Beatrice Wattenbarger Carroll. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Eula Keaton, Veldi Hyde, Toni Richardson, and Catherene Lunsford and an infant sister Mildred Carroll, and a brother, Lewis (Sonny) Carroll. He was a very kind and gentle man, wonderful husband and father. He enjoyed volunteering at the McMinn County Rescue Squad in the 70's for over 10 years, tinkering with anything that could be tinkered with and he did enjoy his ice cream. He was associated with the Beaunit Corporation, Fisher Hosiery Mill, Athens Hosiery Mill, Niota Textile Knitting Mill and Tennessee Hosiery Mill as a knitting machine technician until his retirement. He served in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Nellie Johnson Carroll; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mona and Rick Crabtree and Julie and Pat Lee; grandson, Thomas Lee; and great-grandson, Burgess Lee. A graveside service will be conducted 2:00 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 at McMinn Memory Gardens with officiating. The family will receive friends at Smith Funeral Home from 12:30-1:45 pm, Friday, February 9, 2024 prior to the graveside service. Pallbearers will be Thomas Lee, Patrick Lee, Rick Crabtree, Heath Webb, and Dale Lunsford.
