Luis Magalhães

Age - 79

December 2, 2023

Luis Ernesto Magalhaes, 79, was welcomed into his heavenly home on Sunday, November 26, 2023. A man of unwavering Catholic faith, he was a devoted husband of 49 years to his wife, TaiTai; a loving, dedicated and proud father to daughters Ana (Ian), Cristina (Russ), Guida (Joel), Luisa (Mark) and Connie (Shawn). Gentle, humble, and always ready with a joke, he adored his 13 grandchildren, often proclaiming they were his greatest life achievement. Affectionately known as Avo, his legacy lives on in them: Aiden, Riley, Meaghan, Tea, Keenan, Kyla, Owen, Jonty, Adriana, Gabriela, Will, Violet and Catarina. He loved their company and never failed to make time for a game of chess or cards, a round of tennis, a playful wrestling match, any sports game on TV, a doughnut, an afternoon nap, even a chocolate shared together. Predeceased by his wife, TaiTai, parents, Margarida and Antonio Magalhaes, and sister Margarida, Luis is survived by his younger siblings, Ana Maria (Rui), Ines, and Eduardo (Salome), nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Born in Portugal, raised in Mozambique, and professionally educated in Portugal and England, he settled in Winnipeg Canada with his young family. Luis was fond of adventure and the outdoors, and together they explored much of Canada and the United States by car, camping along the way. He regularly took his daughters swimming or a game of racquetball at the University of Manitoba, skating at St. Vital Park, tobogganing at Crescent Park, and cheered whole-heartedly at many of the kids and grandkids sports games and events. For decades, he organized a weekly bridge game with his good friends. Luis loved to meet up for a hot chocolate: he was an incredible listener and cared so much for people. A professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba, he was considered kind and approachable by students. Pious and humble, his commitment to the mission of Opus Dei was remarkable. A long-time volunteer at Casa do Minho Portuguese cultural center, together with his wife, they passed on their Portuguese traditions and language to their daughters and grandchildren. Upon retirement, Luis spent many years volunteering at the Victoria General Hospital visiting patients. During their final years together, Luis and his wife enjoyed living at Southpark Estates. May Luis finally be at peace in the garden of the Lord. A funeral mass will be held at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish, 85 Kirkbridge Drive, Winnipeg, Friday December 8, 1:30pm, with a viewing prior to the mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to Alzheimer's Society of Canada for research and care for those living with dementia.Show more

Shauna-Lee (Shauna) Shepit passed away with family by her side on November 26, 2023 at Grace Hospice at the age of 50. She was predeceased by her father, Gilbert. Shauna is survived by her partner, Mike, children, Chelsea (Cody), Randi, Jade, and Colby, and two grandchildren, Sophia and Jace. Shauna also leaves her mother, Nancy, sister, Marnie-Lee, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as good friend, Jamie. Shauna worked as a server for many years before becoming a Correctional Officer. She made lifelong friendships within both fields of work - drawing people in with her witty banter and infectious laugh. Shauna worked to live and did not live to work. She loved summer days lounging in her backyard with her chocolate lab, Rufous. She liked sipping moscato and listening to country music. Despite being a homebody, Shauna was always the life of the party when she went out - so long as she had a couple drinks in her. Shauna participated in gymnastics as a child and could still land a cartwheel round off later in life. She took up running in her adulthood and completed several half marathons and organized races. Other hobbies included collecting plants, fish, and gaudy home decor - uglier was always better and she had to have it. Shauna had a quirky sense of humour, constantly finding amusement in the mundane. She didn't take life too seriously and was always making fun of herself and the ones she loved the most. Shauna loved being a mother above all else and felt that being a mom was her true calling. She adored her grandchildren and took pride in being their "Jamma. " Shauna is deeply missed and will be remembered, always. The family would like to thank the Grace Hospital and especially, Grace Hospice for the care they provided Shauna during her last days of life. A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday. December 13th from 12:00pm to 3:00pm at Sturgeon Heights Community Centre located at 210 Rita Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grace Hospice or Never Alone Cancer Foundation if friends so desire.Show more
