Sandra J. "Sandy" Edwards, a long-time accountant for HARCATUS Head Start, passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2023, at Aultman Hospital, Canton. She was known for her dedication to her career and her kind-hearted nature. Sandy was born on October 24, 1965, in Dover, a daughter of the late James "Pete" and Maryella Diefenbacher Edwards. She graduated from Dover High School and pursued her undergraduate studies at Kent State University. Her passion for learning led her to earn a master's degree in business administration from Ashland University. Sandy genuinely cared for others. She formed lasting friendships and enjoyed getting together with friends whenever possible. One of her favorite pastimes was watching movies and series on Netflix; she appreciated the art of storytelling. Animals held a special place in Sandy's heart. Her rescue dog, Bentley, brought immense joy into her life. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandpuppies and showered them with love. Sadly, Sandy faced the difficult battle of cancer in recent years. Despite the challenges she endured during this time, she tried to maintain normalcy and not to let the disease affect her. Sandy is survived by her loving children: her son, Jordan Demattio of New Philadelphia, and her daughter, Amanda (Donte) Stewart of Canton. They were not only fortunate to have had a remarkable mother, but also grateful for the valuable life lessons she passed on to them. She is also survived by her sister, Linda Sherer and her brothers, Daniel (Mardi) and James (May) Edwards. In addition to her immediate family, Sandy leaves behind a legacy that extends further to the lives of nieces and nephews. Nancy J. Wilkins, 80, a beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away on Sunday, December 3, 2023, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital. She was born on January 9, 1943, in Coshocton, Ohio to the late Eugene and Edith McCune Heston. Nancy was also preceded in death by her brothers, Keith, Richard and Timothy Heston; and sister, Ann Marshall. Nancy dedicated many years of her life working as an Account Clerk for the Welfare Department at the Tuscarawas County Health Department. Her commitment to public service and her exceptional work ethic were evident throughout her career. Nancy's kind and compassionate nature made a lasting impact on those she served and worked with. She had a genuine passion for animals and cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Another passion close to Nancy's heart was watching Ohio State University football games. Nancy's love for the Buckeyes was an integral part of her identity and something she shared with pride. On June 14, 2003, Nancy exchanged vows with, Dieter Wilkins MD. Together they celebrated twenty beautiful years of marriage. She is also survived by her children, Kelly (Matt) Argento, Mark (Heather) O'Connor both of New Philadelphia, Brent (Dalyn) O'Connor of Gnadenhutten, Matthew Wilkins of Idaho; sister, Janie Heston of Newcomerstown; brother, Matt Heston of Coshocton; grandchildren, Rian, Garin, Kyle (Kara), Brennon (Allysa), Keiron, and Brogan O'Connor, Cassidy (Charlie) Deeds, Connor (Monica) Argento, and Heather (Josh) Mahaffey. Nancy J. (Strother) Berry, 94, of Dover passed away on Saturday, November 25, 2023, at the Community Hospice Truman House. She was born on October 21, 1929, in Shreve, Ohio to the late Ottis and Evelyn Haney Strother. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Walter J. "Bud" Berry on January 31, 2007; and a son in law, William Haswell. Nancy had a vibrant life filled with love, faith, and community involvement. She was a member of the New Cumberland United Methodist Church and the Tuscarawas County Senior Center. Through her participation in these organizations, Nancy formed deep connections with her fellow church members and community members. She was also a 1947 graduate of Dover High School. Nancy was a cherished member of her family and leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion. She is survived by her children, Raymond (Nancy) Berry of Virginia, Denise (Larry) Graham of Dover, Lesa Haswell of Cortland. Her sister, Carolyn Sue (Tom) Brown of New Philadelphia and brother, Ottis Bernard Strother of Michigan also survive her. In addition to her children and siblings, Nancy is fondly remembered by her grandchildren, Scott (Brandy) Fisher, Dan (Brittany) Haswell, Dave (Mary) Haswell, Robert (Tammi) Duffy, Kevin Duffy; great-grandchildren, Zoe (Justin) Troyer, Joshua (Karissa), Bryan, Trey, Brandon and Hannah Duffy, Alice, Hailey, Kira and Adora Haswell; great-great-grandchildren, Rylee Jae and Raya Laine Duffy. Nancy's generous spirit and warm heart brought joy to all those around her. Her family and friends will forever treasure the memories they shared together. Richard J. Jagunic, 71, a dedicated educator, talented artist, and loving partner, passed away on Friday, November 24, 2023, at the Community Hospice Truman House. He was born on July 14, 1952, in Lorain, Ohio to the late Peter and Yolanda Leskovich Jagunic. Richard was also preceded in death by brothers, Daniel and Larry Jagunic and an infant brother. He touched the lives of many through his teaching career and involvement in the arts. After graduating from New Philadelphia High School in 1970, Richard pursued his passion for knowledge at the University of Miami. In 1974, he earned his bachelor's degree and embarked on a remarkable journey as an English, Speech, and Drama teacher. In 2016, Richard retired from Tuscarawas Central Catholic High School after dedicating an impressive 41 years to shaping young minds and nurturing their artistic talents. He was passionate about enriching his students' understanding of literature and guiding them through the intricacies of the English language. Additionally, Richard's commitment to fostering creativity led him to establish the Drama Department at TCC. Richard's impact extended beyond the walls of his classroom. He enthusiastically shared his expertise in directing, choreography, set design, and construction with various theater communities. His creative contributions enriched productions at Little Theatre, Hudson Players, Berea Summer Theatre, Trumpet in the Land, and Theatre West Virginia in Beckley. Richard also lent his choreography and directing talents to Tusky Valley, Dover and Carrollton High Schools while showcasing his set design skills at Welty Junior High School and New Philadelphia High School. In addition to his career achievements, Richard co-founded and wrote for Mr. E Murders Murder Troop starting from 1992. His devotion to bringing stories to life on stage was evident not only through teaching but also through these theatrical endeavors. He also found fulfillment in designing and remodeling houses, where his impeccable taste flourished. Richard embraced life outside of work as well. He treasured spending time camping and traveling with loved ones. Amongst their cherished traditions was an annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas, having done so for the past 30 years. These adventures allowed Richard to unwind, create lasting memories, and revel in the company of those he held dear. Richard's legacy will forever live on in the hearts of his surviving family and friends. He leaves behind his beloved husband of 46 years, Richard "Sonny" Sonnhalter, with whom he celebrated six years of legal marriage on July 11, 2017. Richard also leaves behind his sister Judith (Mark) Dummermuth and brother David (Jennifer) Jagunic, both residing in New Philadelphia; and many nieces and nephews. Margaret A. Folger, active church member, a dedicated nurse and compassionate individual, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2023, surrounded by her loving family in Hilliard, Ohio at the Inn at Library Way. She was born on December 13, 1930, in Canton, Ohio to the late Erwin F. Theobald and Edna Fisher Theobald. Margaret's passion for nursing was evident throughout her illustrious career. Before her retirement, she selflessly served as a nurse for Rainbow Babies and Children in Cleveland, Ingham Medical Hospital and Michigan State University as a clinical instructor in Michigan and the Tuscarawas County Health Department. Her dedication to caring for others made a significant impact on the lives of countless patients and their families. Educationally driven and seeking excellence in her field, Margaret graduated from Lehman High School in Canton. Following her graduation, she pursued further studies at the College of Wooster for two years and then finished her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the esteemed Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve. A woman of great compassion and empathy, Margaret was involved in various charitable endeavors that brought comfort and support to those in need. She proudly co-founded Hospice in Tuscarawas County and served as an invaluable member of its Board of Directors. Through this organization, she offered solace to individuals facing end-of-life journeys and their families. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in New Philadelphia where she was involved in the the ECW (Episcopal Church Women), the choir, and Altar Guild. Another notable accomplishment was her pivotal role in helping to establish a homeless shelter in Tuscarawas County. Recognizing the urgent need to provide support to vulnerable members of society, Margaret wholeheartedly contributed to the opening of this vital refuge. Margaret will be sadly missed by her son; Peter Folger of Grand Rapids, Michigan; daughter, Katy (Chris) Kennedy of London, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Craig (Kelsey) Folger, Evan (Bri) Folger, Rob Kennedy, Colleen (David) Chapman, Mike Kennedy, Elaine Kennedy, and Jim Kennedy; along with 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her brother, Erwin Fisher Theobald; her grandson, Jon Kennedy, and nieces and nephews, Karen Coughlin, Christopher K. Loomis, Christopher W. Loomis and Trent Theobald. Margaret A. Folger was a beacon of hope, a dedicated nurse, and a compassionate advocate for those in need. Her selflessness, kindness, and unwavering commitment to serving others will always be remembered. Katelyn Nicole Owens, age 15, a vibrant and talented young woman, died Tuesday morning, November 14, 2023, the result of a tragic traffic accident in Licking County. Katelyn leaves behind a legacy of determination and joy. Born on February 4, 2008, in Dover, she was the daughter of Michael "Mike" and Erika (Grafe) Owens of Mineral City. Katelyn's education was of great importance to her. She was a sophomore honor student at Tuscarawas Valley High School, who chose to double-up her academic workload in order to take college courses at Kent State University Tuscarawas Campus next year. Her commitment and ambition were evident as she worked towards achieving an honors diploma. Further, Katelyn participated in the band at Tusky Valley, playing the clarinet, finding fulfillment and happiness in making music with others. Katelyn was proud of the fact that she was employed by Wood’s Tall Timber Resort in New Philadelphia. She had recently obtained her temporary permit and was learning how to drive. Katelyn had an adventurous spirit that was exhibited through her thrill of riding motorcycles with her mother, father and uncle. She was also an avid trap-shooter with the Zoar Road Youth and the Tusky Valley High School Trap Teams. Katelyn made friends easily and had many. As a busy teen, Katelyn very much enjoyed time spent with those she loved. Those closest to Katelyn hope that the tragedy that took her life will not overshadow or define how she will be remembered. Instead, her family and friends will cherish Katelyn for all she was able to experience and accomplish in so few years. In addition to her parents, Mike and Erika, Katelyn will be dearly missed by her brother, Anthony "A. J. " Glass; her grandparents, Chris Owens and Cathy (Grafe) and Dave Schwartz; her great-grandparents, David and Wanda Wells; her special great-aunt, Deb Lones; her uncle and aunt, Jason and Michelle Owens; her uncle, Randall Grafe; her aunt, Tina Shull; her cousins, Bailee and Emilee Grafe, Garrett and Lizzie Smith, and Trevor and Hunter Shull; her much-loved dog, George; as well as many other loving family members and friends. Edward H. "Bud" Wills, a beloved member of the community, passed away on November 4, 2023, at Park Village South in New Philadelphia. He was born on April 17, 1929, to George W. and Edna E. (Horn) Wills. Bud's dedication and numerous accomplishments throughout his life made him a highly respected individual amongst his peers. After graduating from Dover High School in 1947, Bud went on to serve his country with honor and distinction. Shortly after completing his education, Bud enlisted in the United States Navy. During his time in the Navy, he exhibited a remarkable aptitude for engineering and machining and thus found himself working as a machinist. It was during this period that Bud honed his skills as a sound sales engineer—an ability that would shape his future career. Bud's military service continued for four years during the Korean War, where he showcased not only his technical prowess but also an unwavering commitment to the armed forces. On November 22, 1951, he married Rosemary (Woods) Wills. Rosemary preceded him in death on May 21, 2019, after 67 years of marriage. He was also preceded in death by his son, George Gilbert Wills, and his sister, Carolyn Arnold. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, Bud embarked on a successful career as an Electronic Sales Engineer and technician. He also utilized his exceptional machining abilities as the owner of the former South Eastern Electronics in Dover. Not content with only excelling in his professional life, Bud was a passionate individual who wholeheartedly embraced various interests. In addition to being handy around the house—a skill that led him to build their family home. He also made himself available, and his extensive collection of tools to support family and friends. Bud cherished time spent traveling after retiring from his career. Bud possessed numerous achievements of which he was immensely proud. He served as the videographer for both the Central Catholic and Dover St. Joseph football teams—an opportunity that allowed him to combine two of his passions: sports and videography. Additionally, Bud was a dedicated member of the community, always striving to make a positive impact. He joined the Dover Lions Club in 1956 and eventually rose to the position of District Governor. This leadership role within the organization is a testament to his commitment and dedication towards service. Bud's selfless nature shone through in his involvement with various civic organizations. He actively participated in the Boy Scouts of America, Dover VFW, Dover American Legion, and the Ham Radio Club. Through these memberships, he found camaraderie and shared experiences that enriched his life while simultaneously supporting the betterment of society. Bud leaves behind his children; Edward W. (Marilyn) Wills of Strasburg, Mary Ellen (Steven) Sherer of New Philadelphia, and Kathy (John) Novak of Akron; his six grandchildren, Anna (Andrew) Quigg, Jasin Wills, Steven (Linda) Sherer, Alison (Josh) Marshall, Andrew (Brittany) Novak and Adam (Megan) Novak; nine great-grandchildren; his sister, Joann Hawley; along with many nieces and nephews. He was extremely proud of his entire family and never missed an opportunity to laud their accomplishments. Bud always had a kind word and funny anecdotes for everyone. Steven Jon Middaugh, a beloved member of the community and owner of Middaugh Printers in Sugarcreek, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, October 23, 2023. He was 65 years old. Born in Dover on December 6, 1957, Steve grew up immersed in his family business. From an early age, he dedicated himself to Middaugh Printers, a testament to his strong work ethic and unwavering commitment. As the current owner of the printing business, Steve carried on the legacy his family had built, ensuring its continued success. He was a graduate of Garaway High School. Inspired by his family's entrepreneurial spirit, he embarked on a career that spanned decades in many different business ventures. Beyond the world of printing presses and paperwork, he nurtured various passions and interests that brought him immense joy. Golf was one such passion for Steve; whether playing the sport himself or watching it on television, he found solace and excitement in its challenges. He took great pleasure in passing down his knowledge and love for golf to his cherished grandchildren. Animals held a special place in Steve's heart, especially pugs. However accomplished Steve was in his career or hobbies, nothing brought him more pride and happiness than his family. Steve and Linda shared a passion for all things mid-century and vintage and enjoyed finding treasures at auctions together. They also enjoyed taking walks in nature with their dogs. Steve and Linda just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Steve was preceded in death by his father Loren "Wade" Middaugh on June 4, 2023. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Swartzendruber Middaugh, whom he married on August 12, 1998; his mother, Jeri Fete Middaugh; three step-children, Rocky (Courtney) Shanower of Sugarcreek, Sarah (Scott) Whiddon of Dover, and Edward (Kayla) Shanower of Canton; his grandchildren, Rigsby and Wilde Shanower, Silas, Scenic, and Selah Whiddon; two sisters, Lisa (Randy) Immel, and Mandy Donley; his nieces and nephews, Nick (Jana) Immel, Tyler (Kate) Immel, Luke (Charity) Immel, Amber (Austin) Bane, Baillie (Timothy) Schlabach, Wyatt Donely; along with several great-nieces and nephews. Nancy C. Smith, 86, of Dover died Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023 in the Community Hospice Truman House following a period of declining health. She retired from the Kroger Store in New Philadelphia and had previously been the manager at the former Quik Shop in Dover. Born September 23, 1937 in New Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Adeline (Beitzel) Haas. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, L. Dale Smith who died Nov. 30, 2017, two sons, Dale "Rocky" Smith and Jeff Smith; her mother and father- in-law, Fred and Emma Smith and her grandparents, Ed & Elizabeth Haas and Joe & Emma Beitzel. Nancy was a longtime member of the First Moravian Church where she volunteered with the church soup and sandwich luncheons and the sugar cake sales. Her sons described her as a strong, proud and a caring mother and grandmother. She and her husband enjoyed traveling and spent 10 years as snowbirds in St. Cloud, Florida. She looked forward to playing cards with her family and friends. She never missed making birthday cakes for her family. Cynthia C. "Cookie" Starr The gates of Heaven were opened for Cindy upon her death on Saturday, October 28, 2023. There is no person more worthy to spend eternity with her Heavenly Father than she. She was born on April 17, 1953 in Steubenville, Ohio to the late John and Ethel Taczak Starr. Cindy grew up in Amsterdam, Ohio where she attended elementary school and graduated from Springfield High School. Upon her graduation, she attended Kent State University. Her path to employment began at the Amsterdam State Bank and concluded at PNC Bank in New Philadelphia. She was a devoted employee and was appreciated by all who knew her. Cindy was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in New Philadelphia She is survived by her son, Christopher (Doris) Starr of Dover; sister, Amber (Bob) Hottel of South Carolina; brother, Greg (Margaret) Starr of Green; grandchildren, Taylor and Zane Starr, Brandon (Hannah) and McKenzie Sommers; great grandchildren, Connor Sommers and Ashton Sommers; niece, Lindsay Akers; nephews, Brad and Nathan Hottel. Cindy loved spending time cooking, baking and was noted as a talented singer. But more importantaly, she enjoyed time with her son and grandchildren, who she adored.
